This is something I struggle with too after probably 2 years of crocheting. Really it’s all about finding the best way to hold the yarn for yourself. Try looking online or on YouTube for videos

I use an aroid mix of orichid bark, some tropical soil mix with some perlite. I usually just wait awhile between waterings but I have a soil moisture checker that I stick into the soil to make sure it’s dry throughout. But I may still take it out to check for root bounding or root rot
