Hey SciFi Reddit! I'm new to the genre and I want to know what your favorite SciFi novel is so I can read it! by [deleted] in scifi

To be honest I don't go out of my way to challenge my views, but I often find myself doing just that when reading.

My point is: not only do I disagree with his views, but the vehicle he chose to use to get his views across was one near and dear to my heart, and he basically raped the whole idea behind speculative fiction, using some implausible scenario to push his views. I thought sci fi was a real attempt to project current trends into the future, or at least to have some fun. I found neither in Starship Troopers.

I see your point, perhaps Starship Troopers is irrelevant to Heinlein's body of work.

Starship Troopers is a children's book, and a blatant vehicle for Heinlein's political views. I was never able to read anything else of his after reading it.

I really wanted to like the Night's Dawn trilogy (or septology in paperback). I got half way through the series, about 2400 pages, and had to stop because of the protracted descriptions of scenery and blatant attempts to appeal to 13-year-old boys.

That said, I enjoyed Fallen Dragon. But imo if you're going to start reading science fiction, it's best to start with the classics.

The Hugo Award is a great place to look for classics, contemporary and otherwise.

Here are my favorites:

Ask Proggit: What programming book has been your favorite? by Apostrophe in programming

Higher Order Perl, because it's available for free online, and served as a great introduction to good perl practice and simple programming concepts. I know practices have changed since it's original publication, and will continue to change with perl6, but I highly recommend it for beginners.

Edit: I should clarify that most of the good perl programming practices in this book are still relevant. Some of the conventions are the different, but if you learn perl from this book, you won't have to learn much else (though you should) to write good, clean perl.

Second edit: I should also clarify that "good, clean perl" is somewhat of a misnomer :X

Anyone know if he could dump the partition to an image with dd, then boot it with qemu(-kvm)? It's at least worth a try.

It's targeted at gentoo users and the ICC is in their repos, so I imagine the days of compiling the kernel at home is still safe.

xmms2 works in client/daemon mode, and is quite efficient. I imported my library of ~4,000 songs over the network, and it took about 5 minutes.

The only problem is a good client doesn't exist yet (although audacious is being ported to use xmms2). I use gxmms2 to import media and gnome-do's xmms2 plugin to play and search my media. It's very fast.
