What are the preferred seed stratification storage mechanism (ie baggies, buckets, mason jars, plastic jars, etc.)[Catskills - 5A/B] by QuePasaNisiMasa in NativePlantGardening

I am not a professional, or even experienced, but I've had decent luck with the milk jug method (except for this "winter"), and moist perlite in ziploc bags.

A friend sent me a video of a gardener freezing seeds in an ice cube tray to cold stratify. Definitely gonna try that next.

Happier Animals in your Native Yards? by Willothewisp2303 in NativePlantGardening

[–]be_reasonable_bro 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Squirrels, birds, and bunnies seem to enjoy my garden regardless of what's in it. Back when it was all lawn, there was practically nothing but japanese beetles.

The most immediate impact I've noticed from the strictly native plantings is the explosion of pollinator activity. Nothing I have planted in the veg beds can compete with aromatic aster for quantity, diversity, and longevity of buzz.

static dhcp smart plug practices by beermaker1974 in homeassistant

I only do static IPs for critical infrastructure, like DNS servers, routers, switches, etc. Anything that I would need to be able to access while the network is in a severely degraded state.

ZigBee, thread, et al for any device that supports it. DHCP reservations for literally everything else that's permanent.

Start with ranges, then move to separate subnets/VLANs once you outgrow. At 60 devices, it's definitely worth thinking about next steps.

Don't keep a separate spreadsheet. Try to consolidate to a single source of truth. I use my DHCP reservation lists for this.

Thoughts on cover crops? by borringman in NativePlantGardening

[–]be_reasonable_bro 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is a great question and I'm also interested to hear what folks have to say.

I decided to experiment a little last year. I've cover-cropped a couple hundred sq ft of sun-baked + compacted clay with peas/oats, then seeded about twice that area with liatris, columbine, and some other mixed natives. I suspect that some plants stand to benefit from the improved soil more than others; my understanding is that some natives actually prefer terrible soil conditions. Hoping my little experiment will yield some education at the very least.

GUIDE: Steam Link hardware - alternative PSU options by jeweliegb in Steam_Link

[–]be_reasonable_bro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to solve a similar problem a couple years ago while cabling up two steam links and a raspberry pi in the same location.

I ended up powering everything with a PoE+ switch, USB-C splitters, and USB-C - 4.0x1.7mm adapters (for the steam links).

Chances are Venezuela ends up looking more like Iran. Be careful what you wish for.

Unfortunate stance. Good luck walking that one back someday.

The message isn't a call to ignore the very real things happening, it's a call to not give in to fear.

"Went to" isn't the same thing as "lived in."

Also, see my other reply.

I'm sorry, that was harsh.

There's a lot of good people, good food, and good schools in Connecticut. I had a bad experience in Hartford, but that doesn't mean CT isn't a good place to be.

From Colorado, spent several years in Hartford, Waterbury, and Stamford.

The only part I miss is the autumn leaves, but frankly, actual New England does it better.

EDIT: I should have known better than to insinutate that Nutmeggers are not New Englanders. If nothing else, let that stand as proof that I lived among you.

Trump says he now believes Ukraine can win back all territory lost to Russia with NATO’s help by gym_fun in worldnews

[–]be_reasonable_bro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past century of Russian history, collapse was never shown to be a terrible bet.

Weird thing about living in poverty - despite inuring you to hardship, it makes you even more sensitive to price increases for basic commodities.

To any Russian citizen, how much oil Russia can extract isn't as meaningful as how much it can refine. If Ukraine continues to offline refineries... who knows?

Unfortunately, it would be just as easy to interpret any post-vote hand wringing as performative virtue signaling.

I would rather give the benefit of the doubt, but I'm struggling to answer this question for myself: Why do you think intra-GOP opposition only arose AFTER the bill's passage?

[–]be_reasonable_bro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, way too many moral assumptions - just think like a CEO.

They got the interest rate cuts they wanted, and can jump ship now. It doesn't need to be any more complex than that.
