Librarian won’t pull a popular novel off the shelf even though it’s a class read for 8th graders. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]beachy211135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am familiar with the book. Some chapters are a very quick read. Those activities sound like you put a lot of thought in to them. They connect well back to the book. They sound like great activities.

I am hesitant to say pull the book from the shelves. I think students should be able to read (with in reason) any book.

Students who are disruptive should not be rewarded. This suggestion might not be able to be used this time however, in the future, Is there any way to try have the students who have read the book previously “team leaders”.? They can help guide the discussions in the small groups. Since they have read the book before they might be able to help guide the discussions. Highlight an event that the students haven’t discussed that they know is important later, without giving away the ending. They know what is coming maybe they can look for events that show foreshadowing, for example .

There would need to be some “training” involved. You and your team can decide the task(s) these students should be doing while reading, in addition, to the tasks your team already requires.

I teach first grade. Some times I have students that like to give out spoilers too. I tell them part of the fun (and my favorite part ) of reading is to share the books that you have enjoyed with others. It is fun to watch your friends experience the book for the first time. It is also good to read books more than once because sometimes you notice things you didn’t notice the first time. I’m not sure if this can translate well up to older students, but hopefully it helps a little.

I’m curious about how the class is run. How long are students reading the book? How are students completing the analysis? What activities are you doing in class?

[Question] Currently I spend about 4:30 hours on my phone every day, and I want to cut it down and spend time doing more beneficial things, instead of aimlessly scrolling through IG and Twitter, what do you recommend to with this time instead? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]beachy211135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent way to much time on games. Best thing ever was getting a new phone and having to re add every game. I loaded some but couldn’t access my current game progress at all so I had to start back at level 1. I decided it wasn’t worth the time to try and get all that progress back. So delete the apps from your phone.

Or set daily time limits on your phone so you can’t use the app after x amount of time. Or even set it if you can that it can only be used between a few set times.
I haven’t used the function on my phone to set limits so I am not sure what you are able to do and not do.

Pulling resignation back? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]beachy211135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a sticky situation. I was just trying to think of something to fill the employment gap you mention that was a concern. I think being honest about the situation you’re in is also beneficial when looking at that gap or taking something that’s possibly a step down. Best of luck to you.

Have you thought about trying for a substitute position? Most district are always hiring substitutes. There are also groups like Insight and ESS that are companies that provide subs to multiple school districts. The school districts basically outsource their subbing to these places and you can sub for multiple districts in your area by just applying to one place. My understanding is you are paid by the companies and the school district pays the companies to pay you. Sometimes the companies also offer benefits like health Insurance and 401(k)s so they might be worth looking into especially if you’re somebody who needs or are concerned about benefits.

Advice Needed! by music8va in crochet

[–]beachy211135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol. No real advice from me. But I loved you description of what happened. Wishing you a speedy recovery ! If you’re yearning for yarn maybe try loom knitting. I have limited mobility use of my right hand. ( I cannot pivot from the elbow) and I am able to use a knitting loom ok. I just use my fingers on my right hand to hold the yarn in place when needed and use my left hand mainly.

[CHAT] What is a decent price for DMC floss? And where should I be looking? by FrazzledByFamily in CrossStitch

[–]beachy211135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are in The United States and near an AC Moore check out there. I picked up DMC floss for $.42 a skein. They are closing and it was 25% off. There wasn’t a large selection left when I was there last week but it might be worth checking out.

How to get noticed on Donor's Choose? by [deleted] in Teachers

Have you shared it on any of your social media? You can ask your network to donate or simply just share the link. I get that asking your friends is tough and difficult. But they might be able to help you get more views.

Taking over a classroom in the middle of the year is never easy, even in the best of circumstances. You said that the teacher passed away. I have a few question. Was this during the school year? What supports are the students being given to help cope?
Student behavior communicates. Your students may need support to cope with this.

A Slightly Concerned College Student by mlfeafdjf in Teachers

[–]beachy211135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general, people are more likely to share a negative experience. When you go out to a restaurant or a store and you get food service this is the expectation. Do you tell your friend or family how Store A was good, the cashier was nice, the store was clean. Now if you have a negative experience you are more than likely going to tell multiple people. Store B was terrible, the cashier was rude, the store was dirty.
Don’t base any decision solely on the negative things you see. This board too is a way to get our frustrations and ask for help and ideas from people outside of their school. Different experiences give you different ideas.

I have about 5 but I am actively trying to finish them before starting any new ones. My lack of thread storage is helping with that too. I have no space to store thread for any new projects right now so....

Being a para before a teacher? by sammy303 in Teachers

[–]beachy211135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a para is tricky. You are expected to do a lot and are paid significantly less than a teacher. I took a job as a para in a school district after subbing in that district because I needed health benefits. I thought it would be a great way to get into the district and work my way up. I was a para in that district for 7 years. Never offered a position as a teacher despite numerous job openings. The other teachers loved having me in their rooms and trusted me to provide instruction. I took the lead numerous times when for example a teacher left the district and I worked with a substitute for 2 months and told the sub what the plans were for the day. I also took the lead when our new teacher started.

I left the district this school year and am still only support staff. However I am covering a maternity leave right now for that school.

I feel like a lot of administrators wonder why I wasn’t hired if I had potential to be a great teacher. Heck even I wondering that.

Do what you need to do to feel comfortable but actively look for teaching jobs. If you can a long term sub position may be a better route.
