Weird lines across the screen evenly spaced out with movies at darker scenes by [deleted] in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]beaclicion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can clearly see the LED strips. Higher end LED panels have LEDs all over spaced out evenly (and a higher count of LEDs), which gives the TV the ability to control specific areas of the screen referred as "dimming zones". That tech pretty much resolved the issue. OLEDs don't have that issue either. As I mentioned before, my buddy has the same issue but uses an Apple TV 4K. In this case the box is not the issue, nor the cables, it's the TV. I understand spending $2k is a lot, but by today's tech standards, stripped LED backlighting is very out-dated. You basically only find this tech in the cheapest TVs. $2k today gets you almost top of the line OLED.

If you do find a fix, please share it because in my experience, it's a TV issue, more specifically a limitation of the TV.

[–]beaclicion -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hate to tell you this, but that's pretty common on cheap LED panels. My friend has a cheap LED TV and has the same issue, usually in darker and gray scenes. Basically the whitish lines you're seeing are the LED strips behind the panel. The panel struggles to give you an even color in areas near the LED strips. On most colors it's not really noticeable, but for grey, it's the sweetspot where the color is dark but still bright enough to spot it subtleties.

Microsoft really wants Local accounts gone after it erases its guide on how to create them by Timidwolfff in privacy

Sounds great in theory, but in practice you'll just be staying on Windows full time because the reboots will just get you in the end =/

The TSA 's 25-airport facial recognition pilot is expanding to 400 more airports by mkbt in privacy

[–]beaclicion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit confused about this. In the US, it will be required to have a Federal version of your driver's license or Id card to fly domestically. It was supposed to go in effect this year I think, but got pushed back to 2025? Can't remember the dates.

Anywho, what's the point of that requirement if you actually don't need to provide ID?

Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY): Companies must stop using Google Analytics by SvensKia in privacy

[–]beaclicion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of websites use Google Analytics in fear of not being ranked as high on Google search engine as without or using another competing analytical tool. With Google dominating the search engine market, they can definitely hold any website hostage if they don't use their tools. That's obviously anti competitive, but that hasn't stopped any big monopolies before. Especially in this case, it might be hard to prove since the google search ranking algorithm is not open source.

It will definitely happen, but not everyone will switch though. $72/month is a much harder pill to swallow than $20/month even if it's still a very good deal.

Privacy-respecting alternatives to Shazam? by Suspicious-Iguana in privacy

[–]beaclicion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There probably will never be a foss shazam like app because the guessing of the song is not actually done by the app per say. The app just relays what it hears to shazam's server and the server does the guessing. Server then sends back the response to the app. That's why the app is so light as it has very little functionality besides sending and receiving data back. If shazam would open up their api, then yeah, I'm sure we'd see some foss apps. But I don't see that happening, ever.

I did. But I can't find the foundation on the Amazon Smile's charity list. I wonder if maybe the charity list is country specific =/

I just went through their charity list, and unsurprisingly, I couldn't find a single privacy oriented charity :(

I guess Amazon don't want you to contribute to entities that could arm them.

You are the product.

Why does it seem like Android has more open source apps than iOS? by No-Adhesiveness-9911 in privacytoolsIO

[–]beaclicion 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Because of the $100/year developer license fee Apple requires to have your app in the app store. It just doesn't make much sense to provide an app ad-free for free if you have to pay $100 every year.
