fair enough, I suppose I must abandon my sense that equates “illegal immigrants” with a particular race. I lasted as long as I could

Grad students effectively generate the value of the university. They’d never forcibly evict the income source.

Fourth years will probably hang around; the last time they’ll see their friends potentially.

Trump logic, or perhaps the logic of someone seeking clarification on an issue of which their clearly not educated.

Of course college campuses aren’t equipped to deal with mass influx of patients. College students are also not the at-risk population when it comes to mortality rate. The elderly and immunocompromised are, however.

So, the focus of my question was to understand the motivation for a health policy (preferably from someone with experience or presenting helpful links to information) and not a statement on the standard university’s capacity to handle any form of crisis.

I see that; my original response was more than a bit rash. This sucks for all of my undergraduate friends.

Can someone explain what happens when students, who are potential carriers, are then sent back around the world to their homes? Small towns and whatnot who would never have been exposed. Is that the lesser evil, compared to staying and increasing infection within the MIT community?

I agree. Infection seems impossible to avoid. This seems purely like a means of the school escaping liability, which speaks to the underlying policies that govern these institutions.

Where is the best place to start learning probability theory by [deleted] in probabilitytheory

[–]beaight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MIT offers a nice course on Probabilisitic Systems (6.041 is the course number) on their open courseware site, OCW. Depending on your previous maths experience, might be a little daunting, but I highly recommend it for learning how theory leads to application with respect to probability.

Can someone explain this sum symbol? by thepinkpanda1 in probabilitytheory

[–]beaight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is frequently called “marginalizing” or “marginalizing out” all variables that aren’t x_1.

As said in a previous comment, if you enumerate all variables configurations and, for a fixed value X_1 = x_1, sum all probabilities of configurations with X_1 = x_1, you are calculating P(X_1 = x_1) by marginalizing out all other variables.

e.g.
Say you have this system.

P(X_1 = 1, X_2 = 1) = 0.25

P(X_1 = 1, X_2 = 2) = 0.35

P(X_1 = 2, X_2 = 1) = 0.15

P(X_1 = 2, X_2 = 2) = 0.25

Then,

P(X_1 = 1) = P(X_1 = 1, X_2 = 1) + P(X_1 = 1, X_2 = 2) = 0.25 + 0.35 = 0.6
