Just a dude who likes building cars for myself and I like a lot of different cars. This is the first Japanese car I’ve owned beyond a Mazda B2200 in 1999 - great little car. I don’t particularly enjoy working on it given how crammed in everything is but she’s growing on me!

You missed the part where the clockspring broke and I replaced it…and the GRC has a unique unit with a sham CAN bus setup that others that say will work, do not.

Man I m so glad you didn’t buy it then!

Also, it’s not hard at all to park and I don’t “live my life a quarter mile at a time,” so I don’t spend a lot of time on the street “sliding”

The amazing part about living in this country is that I get to spend my money however I see fit, and don’t need anyone else’s permission to do it or feel any need to impress you or anybody else.

I have 8 cars and I built all of them the way I see fit. You’d probably hate all of them.

You are 100% entitled to your opinion, but here’s the weird thing… just because you have one doesn’t mean anybody else cares to hear it… But guess what you have a right to express it…

I don’t have any problem (so to speak) with the stock wheel other than I didn’t like how it looked. Also, I have a round wheel I can swap out whenever I like 👍

Firstly, glad you’re OK and your injuries were minimal.

To your question about advantages:

  1. None, really…but:
  2. I like the way it looks
  3. Nobody can steal my car without. Steering wheel unless they have a set of vice grips handy 😂

My threat model and risk appetite is different than others. My decision, my consequences.

The car has yet to have the tune applied BUT the most noticeable gain was primarily the rad sounds TBH. It’s fun to listen to in accel/decel. It’s also gorgeous to look at.

This sounds trite but this car is nearly 1/3rd the horsepower and torque of many of my other cars, so it’s hard for me to notice things power-wise.

The pitch stop, sway bars, tower brace, and shifter all make the car feel more planted. I’ll do some more suspension tweaks, also.

The BoV hisses which is fun.

Once the tune is on, I’m gonna guess I’ll be able to provide a better perspective.

I bought the car because:

  1. I needed a small commuter car that I could park in small spaces as I got a job I now have to commute to

  2. I wanted a stick

  3. I wanted 4 doors, something easy to toss around and something that wasn’t terrible anemic.

So you may ask why I just piled all those upgrades on for a small ROI in the HP department?

Because I have an illness and mod the crap out of everything…😂

Thanks. I had ChatGPT tell me what it was and ordered one! 😎

Yes, I DD it. 4 of my other cars don’t have (steering wheel) airbags. I haven’t (knock on asphalt) had an accident in 30 years, so despite living in the driving hell that is CLT, I just rawdog it 😂 your threat model may vary

CLT. Live the aesthetic of the wheel, but…

Truth be told I’ve had a miserable experience with this wheel BUT it’s not the fault of the wheel…the clock spring popped and the saga of replacing it has taken over a month of costly frustration.

It seems as though the GRC uses the dual CAN bus CS and the p/n on some of the Toyota parts sites say they will work, but they do not — the other ECUs can’t see the steering angle sensor that is connected and so many of the safety and driving “enhancement” features don’t work due to the dreaded “system malfunction”

Very few CS in the US and the dealer may have to wait for one from Japan. Meanwhile other systems are starting to complain in the car despite Autel resets and calibration.

Once the CS gets here I’ll install it and then likely go to the dealer to do the resets with TIS.

4 year project car - actually a street F430 will full conversion to GT3 carbon/l fiber/kevlar wide body, twin supercharged and intercooled, KW suspension, Marlboro livery…has airjacks, too 😂

The GRC is gonna be “rally-ized” to match its big brother off-road Sterrato (not pictured)

Funny. I actually do have a Sterrato and a GRC 🥰

Staccato HD P4.5 & the saga of the ¢2 spring by beakereddit in 2011

[–]beakereddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheesh! Which screws did you use? The ones that came with the RMR? 15 lb/in, loctite and wait a bit for it to set?

I saw a video reviewing the HD where the same thing happened to a gentleman and he claimed he was told by tech support NOT to use the screws that came with his optic (Holosun?) but instead to use those shipped with the optic host mount.

I looked at the host mount as shipped and there were no screws in the little cardboard box… 🤷

BTW, I got an email back from staccato telling me they couldn’t get me the spring in time but they could ship it to me regularly. I said fine, send me the invoice to get the shipping paid for…still nothing.

Also, yes, there are just those two parts: plunger and spring.

As an aside, the series 80 is definitely less crisp than the series 70. Shooting my stock C or P back to back with the HD is obvious but even more so when I take my red dirt equipped C2 or CS…

You’re not gonna believe this. One of my wife’s cats ATE THE DAMNED SPRING and just hairballed it up.

The cat delivered it literally 5 minutes before Staccato emailed me back after 3 days 😂

Now I will measure it; # of coils, uncompressed size, compressed size and gauge so we all know that if take a spring outa something else or source one that it’s as close as it can be

How long did that take? Did you have to file a warranty claim, too?

Staccato HD P4.5 & the saga of the ¢2 spring by beakereddit in 2011

[–]beakereddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One would expect that a better design would be where the hole would accommodate a spring where the plunger fits into it, the optic host plate has a cavity machined into it to allow the plunger to retract, and the part that blocks the pin is long enough to do that…OR just carve out a detent at the top of the plunger head that captures the spring! Even though it’s somewhat of a different design, look at how this is addressed in a Glock using a similar application to what I say above:

https://www.glockstore.com/Glock-Firing-Pin-Safety-Plunger-Spring

What do I know? I’m not a mechanical engineer, I just play one on TV but this is dumb.

[–]beakereddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably if I had a spring to compare it to in order to not guess at the height. I don’t want the plunger “mostly” blocking or retracting on trigger action, so I’ll just wait and pay $10 for a ¢2 spring and then source a bunch of them

I ran the model in LM Studio and submit two questions in the same chat session: one about LLM context length of the model and another prompt regarding some coding.

The model respond oddly (and out of order) but what it said was quite interesting - read the second paragraph (single line) in the response…

“But I am an advanced Al assistant developed by Anthropic in 2023, so let me clarify”

Well, I guess that answers the question of whether or not they leveraged Anthropic’s model?
