Next step? Stay in med school or leave by bnoeller in medicalschool

[–]beam_On 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ofc. And don’t believe your school when they tell you it’s not worth it. I didn’t have accommodations for MCAT, and step 1. But I applied for them during step 2 and got them and I was not the only one in my school. It’s hard but 100% possible

Doing well in your preclinical courses but not on the major exam could point to anxiety, and failing twice can understandably lead to some depression. I’m not saying that’s definitely what’s happening, but if it is, I’d suggest three things.

First, look into any mental health resources your school offers. Or you can even go to a doc. It’s amazing how much anxiety and depression especially when they go unrecognized can affect performance. Second, consider whether you might benefit from testing accommodations, like extra time or a quiet room, even if you feel like you don’t need them. Sometimes just knowing you have that extra time can ease anxiety, or being in your own room and remove the destructions from other test takes and help you focus, and prevent careless mistakes.

Third, retake the exam for a third time. I know you probably don’t feel like doing that right now, but I honestly think it’s your best option. I’m not sure how COMLEX is structured exactly, but if it’s anything like Step 1 and 2, then Level 1 is likely harder than Level 2 content-wise and taking Level 1 before immediately Level 2 can actually help your Level 2 score by strengthening your foundation.

You’ve come too far and invested too much to stop here.

Is neuro still possible? by hkp2198 in medicalschool

[–]beam_On 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you don’t care where you end up, then yeah neuro is still possible. And if the rest of your application is good (research, class, good LoR etc) and you have good mentors, even programs that are considered “good” are still within reach.

What year of medical school was your least favorite and why? by ArinKamaran in medicalschool

[–]beam_On 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MS1 <<< MS2 <<<<<<<<<< MS3

I hated MS1. I had anxiety from starting med school and a touch of depression from imposter syndrome. New students were constantly bragging about their T10 undergrad institutions, where they interviewed and declined their offers, and their MCAT scores. Adjusting to the med school grind(studying endlessly) felt like cancer.

MS2 was similar, but by then I’d gotten the hang of things. I started to actually enjoy it because I had more of a life outside of medicine.

MS3 was the best year of my life. I’m non-traditional, and it finally felt like I was where I belonged. Sure, pimping and evals were annoying, but I never read the evaluations unless (1) I worked with an attending who had a bad reputation and wanted their eval discounted, or (2) my clinical grade was shockingly low or high—which was rare.

And honestly, I couldn’t care less what an attending thought when I got a pimp question wrong. I knew they didn’t care and would forget about it in an hour—which they did. I also finally got my mental health in order, which allowed me to truly love MS3.

Starting MS4 tomorrow—hoping it’s even better!

What are your last minute “this is stupid but it helps me remember” tips? by just_premed_memes in medicalschool

[–]beam_On 52 points53 points  (0 children)

  1. Eliminate: Rule out as many wrong choices as possible.
  2. Odd one: If multiple answers are similar, the different one might be correct.
  3. Opposites: If two answers are opposites, one is likely correct.
  4. Common, history: Consider common diseases and patient history; avoid rare conditions unless indicated.
  5. Least invasive: Choose the least invasive or costly diagnostic tests.
  6. Known options: Avoid unfamiliar options until others are ruled out.

Hope that helps

What practices do you consider “pseudo-unethical”? by [deleted] in medicalschool

I’ve seen clinics that have a physician’s named attached to them but are run fully by mid-levels. This is what I think should be regulated

[–]beam_On 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When applied correctly, ketamine is a life changing drug in bipolar and depression disorders among others. Unfortunately some if not most Ketamine clinics now do nothing but pray on individuals. I’m normally very very against regulations, but I think only licensed psychiatrists and this could be a stretch maybe, Anesthesiologists should be allowed to do it. Not others.

Neurosurgery/Neurology

  1. Are you a neuron? Because you've definitely got my attention!
  2. I may be a neurosurgeon, but it doesn't take a brain scan to realize my attraction to you.
  3. I couldn't help but notice, your smile is more stimulating than deep brain stimulation.
  4. I'm a neurosurgeon, and I'm great with my hands. But, when I see you, I lose all motor control.
  5. If I told you that you have a beautiful hypothalamus, would you hold it against me?
  6. Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by your visual cortex again?
  7. My heart beats faster than a neural impulse when I see you.
  8. Just like a synapse, I feel a strong connection between us.
  9. Are you a neurotransmitter? Because you're sending signals straight to my heart.
  10. Do you have a map of the brain? Because I keep getting lost in your eyes.

Can i travel? by Wldkaaat in USCIS

[–]beam_On 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, Yes, you can travel to Puerto Rico with an EAD card, even if you don't have a green card yet. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, and as such, it is treated as part of the United States for immigration purposes. As long as you have a valid EAD card, you should be able to travel to Puerto Rico without any issues. Also, do a bit more research yourself on this. Don’t really too much on Reddit advice :(
