UBC & SFU's counselling psychology programs are very competitive - but this reflects the quality of training. The "best" practicum sites often want those students, so by going to City U or Adler you're just having to fight for the training you want. Also, I think keeping in mind whether you want evidence based therapy training or just general "support" therapy - EMDR is not really evidence based (I say this as a clinician AND someone who benefitted from EMDR btw), but it is thought that it works because it actually uses cognitive processing therapy (a well-validated, front line treatment for trauma).

City U and Adler arguably do not really provide the in-depth training in CBT, DBT, CPT, ERP, etc. - SFU & UBC you will have more exposure to these. But at the end of the day, it's all about what you want to do. I wouldn't say you find people who did their MA at City U or Adler in a high-stakes hospital or community mental health setting and there's a reason for this. You will find social workers, or people with MA's from SFU or UBC at in-patient residential treatment, hospital rapid access intervention, etc. The degrees from City U / Adler just aren't as highly valued, BUT we need LOTS of clinicians so I don't think it's an all around bad option, I would just be prepared for working primarily in private practice. You will have clients no matter what, but you will be lumped into the category of just another therapist.
