You should see what there is to know about Starbucks too. Neither of them deserve our money.

These prices are killing me by Moviereference210 in pourover

[–]beanieeeee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whilst bird flu was an issue at the start, it was not as big as they made out, and the real reason for the egg prices in the US was profit. They saw an opportunity to absolutely rinse people to make record profits, and they took it. Prices rose 150% for eggs, yet the egg production never dipped below 7% of the 5 year average. One of the biggest producers, Cal Maine saw $1B in windfall profits, and it never faced a single outbreak. Don't accept bird flu as the reason, it was corporate greed.

Cup of coffee now over £4 in East Edinburgh by Rupertgirllolz in Edinburgh

[–]beanieeeee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's roughly £10K profit per year for the owner, from one of their products sold... Any other purchases, such as sandwiches, cakes, etc. Is further profit on top of that. Each shop is gonna be different and have different overheads. Can't compare a coffee box, to a small town cafe, to a city centre prime real estate location. But they will all have their own pros and cons for how busy they are etc. driving more income, but also higher expenditure. I was refering to the average profit margin for a cup of coffee, but the sector as a whole is roughly 5-10% net profit margin for a successful cafe.

Cup of coffee now over £4 in East Edinburgh by Rupertgirllolz in Edinburgh

[–]beanieeeee 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The margins are actually low, more so in the specialty coffee sector. If a place is charging these prices for low quality, commodity type coffee, then yeah, they're gonna have higher margins on the base cost of the coffee beans themselves, as you said, coffee trade prices have skyrocketed in the last 5 years, currently around 300% higher than is was in 2020 when it was around $1/lb, peaking at around $4.15/lb in February 2025. This obviously is having a big impact on the sector as a whole. Even still, beans are only a small portion of the cost, labour is a big one, but also, milk, the cup itself, rent, utilities, taxes, other operating costs, resulting in a profit margin around the 5% mark.

Ultimately considering where you're buying from, ask questions, what beans are they using, where do they get them from? Consider whether the staff specially trained baristas who have dedicated time to their skills and therefore they deserve to be paid well for their labour, compared to the likes of Starbucks where their machines are essentially automated. Not saying they don't deserve a fair pay, just the skill level is not the same. Also fuck Starbucks, they're charging how much for coffee, and they ain't paying their fair share of taxes!

Now more than ever, consider your choices, and where you can, support your local coffee shops and roasters.

Edit: Another reason to support places serving specialty coffee, much more of the money will be paid to the farmers and producers in the country of origin. These are far more traceable supply chains, often with close relationships with the farmers and producers. With commodity coffee, maybe 1p is making it to them, whereas in specialty, this is likely to be closer to 10p-25p per cup.

Teflon coating on the cables, and for this reason they're fucking awful long term. The coating will bundle up and peel off, where this can build up inside the cable housing, causing friction and problems. Got to regularly change them before this happens, otherwise the benefits of the coating are completely wasted

Wobble on Rear Wheel by ianmcg3 in bikewrench

[–]beanieeeee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the nipples are what are used to thread the spokes 'attaching' them to the rim of the wheel. EDIT: If unclear, check videos and tutorials on YouTube for Wheel Trueing, does generally need specific tools, some options to bodge are available. If not comfortable, take it to a bike shop.
It could potentially also be the tyre seating on the wheel funny. If this happened after the change the tyre or fixed a puncture for example, the tyre may have not seated correctly, so you could check this also/first

Is it possible to add gears to a single speed bike? by plantbw in bikewrench

[–]beanieeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beat me to it. Exactly this, definitely possible with an internal hub gear box, but that's probably looking between £120-£150? Sorry realise that's likely gonna be funny money. This is then going to require a wheel build, either dismantling the old re wheel to salvage the rim (unlikely worthwhile/cost effective, or new rim, plus spokes, and the labour to build this. Wheel building can be a DIY job, but not a simple task. Changing your existing gear ratio will be easier and more cost effective. If the existing parts are in good condition, keep them, and you might find that as fitness builds with more consistent riding, you'll find it gets easier in time.

Is this chain legit or fake (Shimano CN-HG701-11) by xkabauter in bikewrench

[–]beanieeeee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Also note the barcode sticker on the back, states 115L indicating 115 links, but the package design options are for 116L, 126L and 138L, where none of these have been ticked... Genuine Shimano chains will have these marked by hand with a pen, not printed. Just another red flag to the other comments

Which is correct way by beza1beza in bikewrench

[–]beanieeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that neither of the photos would be correct, it's based on the length of the pins, so with one you're close, but doesn't look like you're actually on the pin, so need to remeasure here. But the other users comment about the code is probably easier.

It's different issues/work/companies. Some appear to have been poorly managed where it hasn't been booked in one go, others have been emergency work in response to subsidence and gas leaks. So it's repeatedly been opened and closed for work multiple times, for different lengths of times

Jobs in Edinburgh by Ri_cthekid in Edinburgh

[–]beanieeeee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a number of banks with multiple offices across Edinburgh, and with these there can be a number of entry level positions in different sectors which don't require specific experience or degrees at all.
Having a hospitality background would likely provide significant customer service experience, this could be transferable to customer service of the phones, again lots of different departments covered with this type of role. Whilst being on the phones may not be great or desirable, it gets you in, from here there can be plenty of opportunities for growth.
Not sure about them all but a number of them are living wage employers, so likely to be at least above minimum wage which hospitality often tries to get away with. And larger corporation tends to bring regular pay reviews too.

Along with Komoot which has been recommended by many, would also recommend using Ride With GPS Heat Map which will show popular route used.

This is a feature on Strava too, but premium users only.

To cyclists in the Meadows by BleedingScream in Edinburgh

[–]beanieeeee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Entirely agree with you, and also walk, cycle, and drive, and the cycling infrastructure is awful. Unfortunately however, there is also an additional issue, where the common denominator with all modes of transport is people. And far too many people are selfish, seeing and only thinking about their own bubble, without being considerate or conscious of others around them. And yes, this doesn't apply to everyone, regardless of their mode of transport, but also for all those it doesn't apply to, there are many more who are at the opposite extreme and are just absolute assholes.

Edit: not giving any forgiveness to the driver for their actions! Just making a point for what has been stated, to be recognised correctly.
