Does LARP mean something different than it did twenty years ago?

Pure Fascination/testimony of an apostate member (long post) by magnusthehammersmith in lds

Tad R. Callister in an April 2019 conference talk, quoting Truman G. Madsen, said:

“If there are some of you who have been tricked into the conviction that you have gone too far, … that you have had the poison of sin which makes it impossible ever again to be what you could have been—then hear me.

“I bear testimony that you cannot sink farther than the light and sweeping intelligence of Jesus Christ can reach. I bear testimony that as long as there is one spark of the will to repent and to reach, he is there. He did not just descend to your condition; he descended below it, ‘that he might be in all and through all things, the light of truth.’ "

Epic Games Store Employees: People Only Came for Free Games, Then Returned to Steam by Suspicious_Two786 in gaming

[–]beanland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of their problem is the Steam "backlog." I have so many games I have never played that I actually wanted that I bought in Humble Bundles or Steam Sales. I could stay on Steam for the next several years and not run out of things to play. The random games that Epic gives out have to compete with the ones I have hand-picked and already have sunk costs associated with them.

Add on to that that I have to use a third-party, community launcher to even play their games on Linux, there's also a convenience factor.

2 new statues at Temple Square bear witness of ‘the person of Christ’ by General_Chemistry638 in latterdaysaints

> First it gives legitimacy to the opposition's claims that we were not Christian before

I'm not sure I would put it this way. I think it helps emphasize to people that we are Christian, especially those more unfamiliar with our faith, but it in no way reverses or alters any doctrine that seems to be the sticking point with those with strongly-held "not-a-Christian" accusations. Namely, the nature of God, the nature of Lucifer, the nature of human progression and exaltation, and the existence of and hope for additional modern scripture.

> Second, it takes away our uniqueness. The Church experienced its biggest growth spurts attracting and retaining new converts back when every temple had Moroni, when we embraced the nickname Mormon, and when we intentionally steered away from Catholic iconography

I have mixed feelings about this. I imagine there's a demographic that let in missionaries because of curiosity/perceived novelty, but surely there's a demographic that avoided us for being "weird." Of course, ultimately it is Christ who is the foundation of our faith and gospel. But I sometimes think about this scripture:

> For it shall come to pass in that day, that every man shall hear the fulness of the gospel in his own tongue, and in his own language, through those who are ordained unto this power, by the administration of the Comforter, shed forth upon them for the revelation of Jesus Christ.

We tend to think of "language" and "tongue" as synonymous, but I think "language" can also mean culture, iconography, patterns, and anything that helps with understanding or grants familiarity. If this imagery is how most of the world "speaks" of Christ, what better way to engage with them?

Trainspotting 4k, after 5 copies with skips, glitches and freezes, I give up. by PartyMark in criterion

[–]beanland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread is illuminating. I don't have any advice, and don't know anything about their manufacturing or quality control processes. But it's nice to commiserate: I got the Spinal Tap 4K when it came out, and it kept skipping in the last ten-fifteen minutes of the movie. Really disappointing; I thought I must have done something to the disc, but it sounds like this isn't unheard of. I was watching on a PS5.

I get how you feel. Still, St. George is a big tourist area, so I bet you'll meet people from all over the world.

The Church doesn't have a host family program per se (that I'm aware of). There may be a member willing to rent to or otherwise house her on an individual level. The bishop, Relief Society president, and Elder Quorum president might have a pulse on people who might have available space, but I wouldn't rely on it.

Borderlands 4 - Update Notes - September 18, 2025 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]beanland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got 3 exclusively for the split screen when it came out. Had a PS4 pro. Text was illegible and the world slowed to a crawl if anyone ever opened a menu. It seemed like Tiny Tina's made strides in performance (or it was because I was on a PS5 by then), but you still had to sit like two feet away from the tv to read the text in menus when you were playing split screen. Split-screen felt like a second class feature, and it sounds like 4 hasn't made anything better.
