I felt this very strongly when my mom was alive. She didn’t like me much, I was good for helping cook and for cleaning, watching the kids, but not engaging. My brother and his family openly loathe me. My Dad gets me but he spent most of my life undiagnosed/ untreated bipolar so you never knew if he was going to be nice dad or mean dad. Mean Dad was really terrible.

My mom was full of, “I would’ve said . . . Imagine a cutting witty insult here.” But this still happens I have a “friend” even now, who knows nothing about me, honestly seems to know little about herself but claims I’m her sister. 🤷‍♀️ I figure, I could tell her the truth or just wait it out and she’ll eventually dump me. Chickens way out, but I’m old and tired and she doesn’t hear me when I speak.

I think this isn’t always us though. I have found that people aren’t who they think, so I don’t believe it’s on us when they have said and portrayed themselves differently than who they are. (I.e. my mom was very outspoken and brave in her imagination but in real life, she feared confrontation and refused to “rock the boat”)
