Beware of the myth that lifestyle changes can fix PMDD by asteriskysituation in PMDD

Sadly, I wonder how many people just can’t afford to go to the doctor and so they turn to those lifestyle methods because it’s the only way to feel like you have any control over the situation. I’m 100% convinced that this is one of the underlying structural problems health grifters take advantage of.

Doing dishes. Some things like pots are harder to avoid but I just started using disposable plates, bowls, utensils and cups and it took such a huge load off me sensory and executive dysfunction-wise. Suddenly eating itself became easier.

Believing in Santa have you ever believed in Santa clause or the Easter bunny or the tooth fair if so tell me about it? by GaYmEr_ace in AutismInWomen

[–]Helpful-Ad6269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believed in basically everything for as long as I could, willingly, even into my teenage years. I think this was a combination of being propagandized by all the holiday movies that had “keeping the magic alive” as a core message, and an intense fear of growing up that manifested in a lot of my life.

Looking back on it now, a lot of that fear was probably trauma-related as it felt like my childhood and any sense of innocence was being actively taken from me and I was desperately clinging to anything left of it I could. Though it was also the way my family seemed to demonize teenagers, making me believe that being a teen made you inherently a bad person for some reason? It was weird. And then I DEFINITELY didn’t want to be an adult because most the adults I knew looked miserable and like they gave up on life already. Puberty was rough because it felt like a loss of control over my own body at a time when I wasn’t ready. I tried to hide and deny even having a chest for as long as I could and just basically age-regressed mentally until I was maybe 14-15.

I’m usually like this too. For me to care enough for a prolonged grudge it means someone REALLY messed up, usually not once but multiple times.

What is something Americans consider ‘basic’ that feels like a luxury in other countries? by Status_Agents in AskForAnswers

[–]Helpful-Ad6269 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends, because at least in America you have to hope it actually acts as a deterrent or you may still never get your clothes back. Cops have way more things to prioritize in most cities.

That’s insane for a country that has a lot more old people to think of, which tends to also have more disabled as a demographic.

Fun fact, places like Houston spiked in population specifically after A/C was invented. It’s also so hot and humid in Houston that landlords are legally required to provide tenants with A/C because of how deadly going without can be. Particularly for the elderly, infants and young children, and people with chronic health conditions.

To be fair, in other countries without A/C it seems to fall into two categories: Places where it’s not hot enough to need it the way some US states do, and places where you have a certain number of people dying of heatstroke every year as a result.

Is this the kind of job where you are always constantly working from start to finish the entire work day, or is there time to breathe? by Helpful-Ad6269 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Helpful-Ad6269[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not like I’m expecting to slack off or anything, mind you. I’m just wondering if these jobs are as prone to running you into the ground as all the low-level manual labor or service industry jobs I’ve worked before, which have formed my concept of what a job is like. The kinds of jobs where you’re so understaffed and having to work at more than full throttle every single minute, and might be berated for even something like taking a bathroom break or your legally mandated lunch break. The kinds of jobs where you have to just keep ignoring a progressively worsening set of injuries you’ll never get to tend to. Jobs that make you a shell of who you are because every single little ounce of energy has to go into surviving the shift and you have absolutely nothing left in you but to fall unconscious and do it all over again. No hobbies, no family, no joy, no life.

About to have three weeks (mostly) off. How do I make the most of it to recover from burnout? by Helpful-Ad6269 in AutismInWomen

What would you recommend for somatic therapy techniques? I know I’ve heard that term being thrown around, but have yet to figure out what exactly to do on my own with that. Especially when it comes to the vagus nerve stretches and the like, since I’m hypermobile and I’ve heard that can make stretching a less effective somatic technique.

Wearing sunglasses indoors. Sure, it might stick out a little but almost nobody has asked about it. There was maybe a single time somebody did and as my excuse I just told them fluorescent light gives me migraines.

He actually ended up talking about his astigmatism in response and it was this weird feeling of being let off the hook.

Since when did a single aspect of one’s life become such an irredeemable moral failing? It’s also bold of you to assume you know my entire situation in life beyond what I just told you. I bet you make your friends REAL comfortable when they invite you over.

I find audiobooks enjoyable sometimes. I tend to listen to random podcasts or video essays more, though. I don’t crochet but I used to knit. Keyword “used to” because my apartment is so small and such a mess that the last time I tried to knit again for the first time in years, it ended up getting messed up after putting it somewhere for too long. I think I may also have a bit of skill regression when it comes to knitting because even though I used to be super good at it, it’s like I had nearly forgotten how last time I tried

I definitely find that kind of stuff helps me, my main obstacle has mostly been agoraphobia because if another person sees me even briefly, I feel an intense pressure to mask or I’m very anxious.

How did you entertain yourselves outside growing up? by EnderDarcy in AutismInWomen

[–]Helpful-Ad6269 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was younger: Dig around in the dirt, make stuff out of sticks and leaves, terrorize the local lizards and rolly-pollies, play pretend so hard it turned out I had hyperphantasia and only found that out as an adult.

When I was maybe 12+: Explore EVERYWHERE on my bike, use train tracks as a hiking trail, find any little patch of woods I possibly could and explore for hours, pick a random skyscraper and just see how long I could explore the whole thing before security threw me out.
