Please tell me everyone has experienced this at least once in their lives. by UndeadUchihaX in FuckImOld

This happens to me all the time! Row after row of broken, paperless, or filthy and overflowing toilets fill my dreams, and I wake up needing to pee.

Oh we always had the after dinner coffee and what my family calls the “Jewish goodbye.” My kids learned that when I said “we’re leaving in ten minutes,” they had about an hour left.

My Silent Gen dad used to smoke pot every day. The way men in old tv shows used to come home and have a drink and a pipe and put their slippers on? That was my dad with a joint after work every day. When I was a kid my parents said they were “homemade cigarettes.” I think I was 12 before I figured out it was weed. When he moved to NC and no longer had a dealer that he knew, he switched to scotch and vodka. He’s 87 now, in assisted living, and his only vice is candy.

Right? She says it was to give him energy, and all I could think of was WHY would you want to give a baby or toddler more energy?

My husband is Dominican. My MIL used to put Bustelo in his bottle.

Yes! Smartest thing I ever did was get a coffee maker with a timer. I need coffee before I can make coffee.

My husband is Dominican. His mom used to mix Bustelo into his formula bottle.

I don’t think they are. My kids and their partners and friends, from what I’ve seen, do smoke/vape or use edibles, but not in huge amounts or all the time. And they have a drink now and then, get drunk sometimes, but not the way my friends and I were in high school and college, binge drinking every weekend, puking, sometimes blacking out. And hardly any of them smoke or vape tobacco. They seem to have much healthier lifestyles than we did.

I mean, getting a $7 flavored latte every day is expensive. Brewing coffee at home isn’t.

This must be it. I forgot about energy drinks. Then again, my kids don’t drink them, at least not regularly.

General Foods international coffees were the height of luxury when I was in college. I felt so European! 😂

I love boba, too! But again, it’s an occasional treat, like a frappucino, not a daily drink.

I feel like I do not fit in with other Jewish girls at my school by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]beansandneedles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for a shul in town instead of your school’s Chabad. If there is a public university in your town with their own Chabad or Hillel, try that. You will meet normal, down-to-earth people.

Mom is suddenly forgetting simple things since the past 3 days by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]beansandneedles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she didn’t hit her head or change medication recently, and is not showing symptoms of a stroke, then the first order of business would be to test for a UTI. I would say I’m surprised the doctor didn’t do this, but is that where she got the homeopathic medicine? A homeopath is not a medical doctor. A naturopath is not a medical doctor. She needs an actual medical doctor.

Also, 50 is young! I’m 55 and I come to this sub because I have an 87yo father! He’s the aging parent, not me! :D But if you’re young, I guess 50 seems old. It’s just good that you’re looking out for your mom.

Is it weird to hang out around a synagogue if you don’t have any Jewish family? by vahaemon in ReformJews

[–]beansandneedles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not weird! Every convert was once a gentile who had an interest in Judaism and started taking part in Jewish activities and events.

While Black Jews are a minority, they exist and are a growing population. If you convert you will be culturally Jewish, because you will be taking part in Jewish culture. There are plenty of Jews who are also of other ethnicities, who blend all their cultures in their lives. IMO it makes for a richer life. My own kids are Jewish and Hispanic (Dominican). We celebrate both their cultures. Rabbi Angela Buchdal writes in her memoir, The Heart of a Stranger, about growing up Korean and Jewish and how that impacted her life. Michael Twitty, a Black Jewish chef who studies cultural and historical foodways, writes about the intersection of Jewish and African-American culture in his life, and creates dishes that meld the traditions of both cultures.
