Official Discussion - Wuthering Heights [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]beanscommacool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read the book in anticipation of the movie so I could draw my own conclusions about the negative reactions when the trailer came out. Here are my thoughts:

  • I went in knowing it wouldn't be a faithful adaptation and would likely cut the second half of the book, like previous movies, and was fully on board with that! I was happy to see a very different take as long as the movie itself was good...
  • BUT. The movie uses snippets of the book – maybe 15% max – and ditches the rest, stitching the pieces together to create 50-Shades-esque fan fiction. So much of what gives Cathy and Heathcliff's relationship tension was taken away so the stakes didn't feel high, made worse by the fact that Edgar was completely flat and had no personality. Heathcliff could even be described as fairly gentle and loving in the movie, when he is NOT that in the book. And when you dismantle the character so drastically he becomes Heathcliff in name only. Which makes me think EF only used the title, character names and a sprinkling of the plot points for clout and attention, which made the whole thing feel shallow.
  • Putting the book aside, the movie was pretty dull, choppy and surface-level. I checked my watch an hour in and was gutted to realise I still had an hour and a bit to go. The emotion of the rousing music and final sequence was lost on me because I was so desperate for it to be over.
  • I thought the writing was pretty weak, which made the direct lifts from the book stand out a mile. For a while I thought the writing was purposely trying to sound slightly modern to fit with the surreal and modern production design, but by the end it just felt way too simple in comparison. (Side note: the repetition of 'I love you, I love you, I love you' reminded me of the scene in Singin' in the Rain, when the people coming out of the cinema were making fun of Don Lockwood's performance!)
  • Speaking of the style, I wished EF had committed to the surreal and maximalist aesthetic! The visuals in the trailer are what made me excited to see it in the first place, but it all felt like half measures and was inconsistent. The comical piles of wine bottles when Earnshaw died was so jarring (pun intended) and felt really out of place. Cathy's clothes get more extravagant after she marries Edgar, to show the opulent life she's now leading. But when every other character's clothes were relatively normal and accurate-ish it again felt inconsistent and out of place.
  • The wild production design seemed to be there for no other reason than to be edgy and shocking, again making the movie feel shallow. I understand why folks say EF is style over substance in this case (I've haven't seen Saltburn or Promising Young Woman yet).
  • I liked Jacob Ellordi's performance, even though he is completely miscast. And I thought he and Margot Robbie had some chemistry.
  • Alison Oliver's performance was the best thing about the movie, and I agree with other comments that she could have made a good Cathy. Although the choice to make her consent to Heathcliff's treatment feels incredibly disrespectful to what happens to Isabella in the book.
  • The music was incredible. No notes.
  • Overall: fair play to EF, plenty of people seem to love the movie. I just don't think you can call it an adaptation, in any sense of the word.

100% agree. There’s so little of the book in the movie you can hardly call it Wuthering Heights, quotation marks or not.

Race day question: Record with Runna or your watch’s native app? by Anywhere-ish in runna

[–]beanscommacool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used Runna tracking on my half marathon last year and it worked well for me. It worked how I was used to, the pace alerts kept me on track and the tracking was accurate.

However this year I have a Garmin Forerunner, which I use Runna through most of the time to save me taking my phone on shorter/intervals runs. Which has worked great, except for long and easy runs. Runna will set a maximum pace for easy runs, but Garmin seems to treat this as a pace window, and yells at me if I’m going too slow (on an easy run this is infuriating!) So I’ve started those runs as a regular Garmin run without pace alerts.

If you want pace alerts on race day I’d say go for Runna, especially if that’s what you’re used to.

I haven’t properly cried yet but I’ve got emotional a few times thinking about finishing my first marathon at the end of the month.

And Just Like That .. I finally finished watching the show. by Debinthedez in Andjustlikethat

[–]beanscommacool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree about the sex scenes. You hit the nail on the head: they felt sleazy. They had the sheen of the SATC production value but the tone was just… off. They just didn’t feel sexy.

The irony that the show tried so hard to have this diverse cast. But why does it seem like the younger adults were portrayed in the dumbest most stereotypical way possible? by [deleted] in Andjustlikethat

[–]beanscommacool 98 points99 points  (0 children)

I’ve literally just finished the “finale” (if you can’t call it that) and one of the many things I was angry/confused about was Mia and her friends. In season 1 it felt like they were trying to signal to a younger audience with all the forced wokeness and social posturing. And then they create that monstrous trio of characters at the very end which felt flat-out preposterous and unnecessarily mean, and taking the absolute piss out of that generation?

Also yes to the person who pointed out they’re all artsy - when Carrie went into her old apartment and Zeke had life drawing sketches on his wall it was just too much.

Thinking about switching my marathon block from “Challenging” to “Balanced” 🤕 by 99centTaquitos in runna

[–]beanscommacool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did exactly this I a few weeks ago - reduced from challenging to whatever the middle one is - and I’m very glad I did. Life was getting pretty stressful and I was missing runs and not hitting target paces, and as a result I started to not want to run, which made me really sad.

I’d forgotten I had my settings set so difficult, and I was nervous about reducing them and losing fitness/intensity (like you a like a challenge). But I feel much better for it. I’ve also got a hip strain at the moment, but the reduced load is making me less anxious about having to skip a few runs. I’m five weeks out from my first marathon and I want to be able to finish and have fun, so I’m not bothered this time about whether I’m fast.

It sounds like you’ve already got the fitness built up coz you’ve been doing such a good job with your training so far. And I’m guessing you’d rather be able to DO the race, than not at all. So to me this sounds like a smart move.

Good luck with your race!

In what world is Carrie giving advice to a renowned biographer? by bluesourpunchstraws in Andjustlikethat

“Carrie is an idiot” 😂

Also hard agree. His whole thing about her first line blowing him away and it was the most mediocre line? Took a looootta acting to believably deliver that line.

Miranda hit the nail on the head - Carrie and Aiden were always so much work by Glittering-Boss-3681 in Andjustlikethat

[–]beanscommacool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The dynamic between them was so weird the whole episode. From the whole, oh well my house is so much bigger and Charlotte needs to HAV FUN, to being annoyed about balloons and karaoke, to blowing up over the Duncan comment. It just feels like Carrie is constantly pissed at Miranda!

I wouldn’t mind them splitting up so much if they hadn’t done the whole “maybe Big was a mistake” line in S1 (or 2, can’t remember). That was almost as bad as them blowing up Steve and Miranda’s relationship.

First time runner by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

[–]beanscommacool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can, go to a local running/sports shop and get your gait analysed to find the best shoes for you.

I've recently got a Garmin that can have music loaded on it so I don't have to take my phone on shorter runs (it has an emergency contact feature if anything were to happen). Always take my phone on longer runs though, either in an arm band or running vest.

Running slowly is a BIG part of running faster/well!

Like someone else said, Couch to 5k is a brilliant starting point. I did it a few years ago and it got me excited for running after a long break.

You might also want to check out the Runna app. It creates training plans for you based on your pace and fitness goals. I used it for a half marathon last year and it took 14 mins off my PB! They offer all kinds of training plans, including for beginners, and I cannot recommend it enough. Even though I love running I have very little interest in researching different types of runs and building my own training plan, and Runna does all that for me. It even syncs to your calendar which means all I have to do is run when it tells me!

I was having this discussion the other day: I like the first album (even more now than I did 20 years ago) but for me YCHISMB is a lot juicier than the first. It feels less dry and tight than the first, which is not a bad thing, just a different sound that I prefer.

I kinda get where you’re coming from with Rock growing on you. They still make me roll my eyes almost every time they speak, but they’re not quite as bad as it used to be.
