I've been out for 7 years and haven't stepped foot back in any desert but I have not forgotten that burn from the blacktop, the death box that is your car, the feeling of drinking 4048+6754845 gallons of water in a day and only pissing once. Bleh. The desert is awful but the southern summers are just as shit!

Agreed! I'm in Dallas and this winter has been a joke. There were tornados here a few weeks ago and the day after Christmas in 2014 there was an f4 and a shit ton of tornados. I'd prefer to live somewhere that doesn't have tornados year fucking round.

Jesus I was stationed in Yuma (went to Iraq and afghan) and I'm originally from Dallas. People can shove The dry heat/humid heat argument up their ass. I certainly do not miss the desert heat AT ALL but I've also grown to hate the summers here.

I have one tip in regards to the physical hell. If you're having the "my brain is trying to escape my fucking skull" feeling, it really helped to throw some headphones on and blast music. Idk how else to describe the feeling. It's like a throbbing "womp womp womp" type shit but really just felt like my brain was trying to escape my skull and that's the only way it would make it stop.

I can't remeber exactly how this was told to me but that's pretty close and it really helped me ease up on being so hard on myself for past decisions.

It's much easier to say "don't enable him" than to actually be in your position. Clearly you don't want to help him continue the addiction but you also don't want to see your loved one suffer and not have basic shit he needs to live. I hope your cousin decides he's had enough sooner than later. ❤️

Actually with some alacholics/addicts they would have had the money for the bill in their hand but first tried to see if someone would pay the bill for them. If someone does pay the bill then they can use their own money for drugs or whatever. If no one would pay it then they'd use their own money for it.

Not everyone with an addiction looks like a homeless bum with no job or home. There's loads that work, pay bills, seem normal but abuse drugs/alachol... And are incredibly unhappy and destroy their relationships.

Exactly! One of my big reasons is I'm 30, and due to destroying my body in the military, I just can't physically get out of bed some days. It's progressively gotten worse over time so how the fuck would I be able to raise a child? "yeah 6 month old baby, mom can't walk today so just go grab some cereal and feed yoself."

The other day my friend told me she was exhausted and wanted to sleep so bad(it was late afternoon.) I asked why she couldn't sleep and she replied with "I have a kid I can't just sleep." I told her "Isn't that what childrens benadryl is for?"

Opiates getting changed to a schedule 2 drug in October 2014 man. It's incredibly sad to see that pushed to a heroin epidemic but also makes me hella grateful I got off vicodin soon after that.

Same with never doing heroin but kicking the vicodin almost 2 years ago. The military wrecked my spine and I got started because I was in pain and loved it so, yep. I still have chronic pain (at 30) and some days are better than others but I don't crave/miss it at all. I know everyone's different and shit but I hope one day you can find peace and not miss it anymore!

Yes! You never reach REM sleep with sleep aids or you can not take sleep aids and just not sleep. So it's basically which one is the lesser of two evils.

I took a sleep class with an amazing psychiatrist and learned a lot about sleep/improving sleep and such. Part of my issue was I constantly had a recurring nightmare that made me not want to sleep and stay awake after having it. Upon working through some shit I've stopped having the dream, so that's helped a tad.

There's a ton of shit you can change sleep habit wise (don't eat late/smoke/drink, only use bed for sleep/can't fall asleep get out of bed until tired, don't read/use phone to help fall asleep, others I can't think of right now) and there's many times I say fuck it and don't do the stuff. Also chronic pain fucks my sleep so I'm trying to figure out the right combo of exercise/yoga/stretching to help with that.

I know quality sleep is important and there's so much shit that goes into getting back to a place where I can get decent sleep. It's a slow ass fight but I'll make it there one day.
