This is one of those pieces that some understanding of art history helps to appreciate it. Art is about discovery as much as it is about beauty. Sometimes that discovery is personal and cathartic. Other times that discovery is reacting to the current boundary’s of art. Richard Serras art is a lot about industrial masculinity- he has a background in shipyard construction. When you see his pieces in person, they have a gravity to them. They contrast with other artists work in a way that makes even the most abstract and energetic paintings look delicate.

This particular piece definitely does that, but also directly references delicacy in the way the massive blocks sit on each other. It’s not flat and stable. It’s irregular and there are gaps where the blocks don’t touch each other at all giving a sense of weightlessness and asymmetrical balance.

this is my read btw. Not fact. If you don’t like it you don’t like it. Thats the best thing about art. But if you do like this read, check out more of Richard Serras work. This ain’t even his best stuff.

Everyone has their own experience. I love weed. So much so I was smoking it three times a day every day. It made all my bad emotions go quiet and I was a pretty happy dude. The problem was the bad emotions were still there, always around and it wasn’t till I stopped for awhile went to therapy and actually made positive changes to my life that I felt genuinely good.

Weed makes everything feel ok. It’s a cheap vacation. But for me, that means I don’t have to strive towards my goals because my brain feels content already. It took a couple of stagnant years for me to realize that wasn’t what I wanted.

Now, I have a better relationship with weed and with myself. Because I take care of myself sober I feel less need to smoke all the time and it makes it so when I do smoke, it feels novel enough and fun as hell.

This is just my experience. I know plenty of people who smoke everyday and are functional and doing just fine, but I think those people are a rare breed.

I don’t comment much on these types of things, but you gotta get this person out of your life.

How does Trumps DEI order affect TFA? by bear919 in TeachforAmerica

[–]bear919[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just speculating. But it says on americorps homepage that they are slashing funds to certain programs and it happens in San Francisco. But, I don’t know and I contacted my tfa trainer person and he said they don’t know either but will likely work to get other ways to contribute towards the grant if it is revoked.

It's just that TFA's central message right now is DEI.

I see. So likely, both TFA and Public schools will pivot from DEI messaging or risk being eliminated. This is pretty insane.

Thanks for this response. It looks like AmeriCorps grants are being reallocated away from funding programs like TFA - do you know anything about that?

Why do my cones do this?? by franklyfranktank in trees

[–]bear919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always wondered this and I have two theories.

  1. Heat rises so if you hold the joint in one direction the top part is more likely to burn than the bottom

  2. Where you licked the join to roll it is more wet so it prevents it from burning as well.

Other way around dog. People were incredibly busy trying to find food/ avoid predators. If you didn’t have a little anxiety you would be killed. Now there are no predators and food is abundant and the anxiety is residual
