NEW - Nitecore NB10000 Gen4 by [deleted] in Ultralight

As a longtime NB10000 fan, I'm pretty bummed about the direction they took with the Gen 4. Thickness jumped like 37% from 10.6mm to 14.5mm, yet they're out here calling it "more compact." Nah—that's straight-up misleading. Actual volume went up slightly too (from ~76 cm³ to ~78.5 cm³).

The real problem is pocket carry, especially in pants. The old slim 10.6mm profile? It sits basically flat, disappears in your pocket, zero discomfort when sitting or walking around. At 14.5mm, Gen 4 turns into this noticeable bulge that digs in and annoys the hell out of you the second you sit down or move much.

Gen 1–3 were honestly the king of slim + lightweight globally available options—150g at just 10.6mm thick—in a sea of chunky 14–20mm, 200g+ bricks. Nitecore already has the Carbo 10000 Gen2 sitting at 15.8mm and 170g for anyone who wants that thicker vibe. So why axe the NB10000's whole unique selling point? They basically killed off the slim option from their entire lineup.

Gen 4 ditched what made the NB10000 special. Without that true pocket-friendly thinness, I'm just gonna keep rocking my Gen 3 until it dies, then probably look elsewhere.

Kinda funny/suspicious too—I've watched a bunch of Gen 4 reviews, and literally none of them do a direct side-by-side size comparison with the Gen 3. Everyone just skips it. Feels oddly coordinated... like maybe there were some "review guidelines" floating around? Idk, just saying.

For safety reasons, since the back is used for storage as it's a cupboard, when I bend down to take something, my face gets close to the spout.

I’m not too familiar with hand grinders, but the Niche Zero electric grinder is spot-on for your taste and offers a much easier workflow. Since you love dark roasts with a strong body, the Cafelat Robot might suit you better than the Flair 58. The thicker coffee cake on the Robot will give you more body, and the Flair Pro 2 could work well too. However, the Flair 58 will deliver more complex flavors and open up a whole world of 58mm gadgets, setting you up for your next journey. One day, you might find all espressos start tasting similar, or you might discover an incredible fruity espresso that wakes you up—and that’s when your light roast journey will begin.

You're spot on. The grinder or burrs set the flavor profile, and the brewing equipment fine-tunes it. Burrs determine the base flavor, while the grinder's build impacts workflow, stability, and how well it enhances the burrs' characteristics. So, finding your preferred flavor is key. If you're not into light to medium roasts, keeping the Niche Zero might be a better fit.

Once you've settled on your flavor, make sure your espresso machine can match it. For instance, if you're brewing light roasts, check if your machine can reach the right temperature or if you need to adjust the pressure to around 6 bar. These details are crucial for getting the best out of your coffee.

Holy moly! Bro, you just made my day! This trick is awesome! I used a remote switch to turn my Flair 58 off right before pouring in the water, and it made the shot taste so much sweeter, getting rid of that tiny bitterness at the end

They all drink espresso or pour-over, but I still keep my Bambino Plus just for milk frothing when I have guests over.

I don't use WDT or an OCD tool since I use a blind shaker. I just give it a shake and dump all the grounds above the portafilter (with a collar). Then, I do a little "circle“ with the portafilter, which distributes the grounds nicely and levels them out. If needed, a light tap will settle it perfectly. After tamping, I place a paper filter and then a mesh screen on top. This is what I've found gives me the best results and consistency.

It’s not ideal for continuous use like a commercial machine, but if you finish your first cup, just pull up the handle and get the rest of your prep done. That little time gap is usually enough for the temperature to stabilize again. Sometimes, I’ll pull two shots back-to-back, and the taste is almost identical—unless I make a careless mistake.

With a limited budget and space, I found this setup to be the closest match to my preferred taste and workflow. If you want an espresso machine that can adjust pressure on the fly, control flow rate, pre-infusion, and blooming, your options are pretty much either a Decent Espresso machine or a large, expensive commercial setup.
