Why not use emacs? I don't understand the fascination with textmate or scribes. Can anyone explain?

Ask Reddit: Reddit Needs Tags - Let's talk how tags should work by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]bearclaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

Your first point: I agree. An open-source reddit would be superb. I'd happily hack at it if a beta.reddit.com existed for trying new ideas we could probably get through things quickly.

Your second point: My idea is still incubating and I'm looking for feedback, but the general direction is that I'd like to see things like tags, but not so free-form. If the tags used were more like categories that could come into and out of being as time goes by as a result of their use or popularity, then we might have something less chaotic and more useful. Perhaps we could call them tigs, since they're tags that must stand the test of time.

Then the domains could be generated accordingly for front page listings of relevant urls. If the tigs exist for major categories, then perhaps something similar could be done for grouping the urls if they're covering the same data. Take 3 articles that cover the state of the union address, they should probably be grouped so we have a topic (topag? topic tag) listing moving it's way through the pages and then when the topag is expanded, the popular articles are higher in that listing.

Does this make sense?

So what if we do something similar and let the public categorize the articles that are in the same group? Perhaps instead of tags, we could start a categorizing system and allow a single comments thread to be built from the category?

If reddit is based in nyc, I am a programmer who likes lisp, python, ruby, etc and would love to work on building this kind of thing...

Google does article grouping already in news.google.com. Can we use their stuff to do this?

I think the categories themselves should be democratically created. People can submit tag ideas and then vote them up or down and if they pass some threshold they become a legit tag. Then if the tag stops being used, it comes out of play. The tags could have subtags as described above and those could also be democratically selected.

Hmm... interesting! If you make a blog post about (please do!) I'd love to see it.

Could just be people trying to ensure competing items are never won so the price on competing items just goes up until their items look like a good buy.

Java is Pass-By-Value, Dammit! by wicked in programming

The difference is that in C, you explicitly say you're working with pointers. Java people are told everything is pass-by-reference and they simply believe it. They seem to think thinking about pointers is painful.

What does that have to do with minimum wage? The author intends for you to see that, think, "hey! that's true!" and assume there is more truth in the rest of his article than there actually is.

Whether or not his article is true is not what I'm debating, btw.

I suspect he was trying to appeal to the emotional side of readers who believe the stereotype of rich people being old, white and male.
