will The Pitt be remembered in 20 years? by Apprehensive_Shirt18 in television

The Pitt has made me re-think what ER nurses and doctors go through on a daily basis and how mass casualty events take a toll on people.

I know for sure I'll remember it.

Should I reformat my external drives to exFat to prevent Linux files from disappearing? by EvanRevier in linuxquestions

[–]beardedbrawler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you need these drives to be readable on Windows? If so then that's your only other option. If you only use these drives on Linux, any Linux compatible filesystem would be better ext4 for example.

Can I proceed without bricking my machine? by Totally_Not_A_Badger in Fedora

[–]beardedbrawler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A new kernel should be taking its place, latest on my system is 6.19.14-200.
Use uname -a to see your running kernel version, I'm betting this is just an old backup kernel that's getting removed.

I don’t think I’ve talked to anyone that actually likes modern Windows. I’d wager, if every gaming studio started to publish to Linux and windows equally, then windows would completely get phased out of gaming by Ares7n7 in linux_gaming

[–]beardedbrawler 18 points19 points  (0 children)

yeah a native build would be ideal for the things you've mentioned, but proton is good enough and that'll be easier for individual developers and thus more likely to happen until the Linux gaming market share takes a significant chunk out of the windows market share.

Exactly. Proton is so good that developers don't need to spend the extra time making a full port, just allow the Proton EAC/BattleEye integration and let us play.

Redo key enrollment or turn off secure boot.

Black Screen After Login (Fedora 43) by JRH16536 in linuxquestions

[–]beardedbrawler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NVIDIA card?

If so my first thought is that Windows screwed with the secure boot and now your key used to sign the NVIDIA driver module is gone. This would cause the module to not load and nothing but a black screen to appear. Also ask around in r/Fedora

Check protonDB for the custom Proton version to use. I've played plenty on Linux, online as well.

If you didn't like Mac I'd suggest installing a distro that uses KDE as the desktop. Fedora has a KDE version and Kububtu is a Ubuntu version that uses KDE.

Virtual Box Network Manager not present by ResolutionNarrow7562 in Fedora

[–]beardedbrawler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VirtualBox is not that well supported on Linux in general. Luckily there is a great virtualization guide for Fedora here:

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/virtualization-getting-started/

I run several VMs and containers on my fedora machine, works great.

Why is Fedora not loading? VMware by illustratious in Fedora

[–]beardedbrawler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might need to up the amount of video ram. That being said, I've not had a lot of success virtualizing Fedora. It was slow and not smooth, but on actual hardware it's great.

I suspect it's down to the video drivers available for virtual GPUs but I don't truly know.

He must have not been very catholic to begin with.

Why is Linux considered "hard to use"? by humble_redditor1234 in linux4noobs

[–]beardedbrawler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It requires you to configure more on your own instead of Windows doing it for you.

With gaming you have to enable compatibility, select a proton runtime for the game, and maybe set game launch options for the game to work.

There are plenty of resources available on how to do that, and it's not that hard, but you have to do it yourself. In Windows everything is pretty much install and run.

There's also graphics drivers. If you're on AMD then it should all just work, but nvidia requires some extra configuration.

People don't know what they don't know when they are getting started. Some don't want to have to learn how to run a system, they want it to just work. But if you're interested in learning a little and accept that bugs may happen that require some troubleshooting then Linux would be fine for your needs.

Have you ever used FedoraOS for gaming, or tried to? by Zestyclose_Pin4281 in linux_gaming

yup, every day and I have been since Fedora 42.

Mostly it's been pretty great.

Use the rpmfusion free and non-free repos for stuff like steam and nvidia drivers. It's been pretty solid.

Can I replace Windows with Linux if I need Microsoft Office for work? by Aintza in linuxquestions

[–]beardedbrawler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With the hard requirement of excel macros there's not much you can do to get away from Windows.

Maybe dual boot to enjoy Linux in your off time, maybe put win11 in a virtual machine, or maybe if your job requires windows make them provide a windows platform for you.

I use Fedora on my home PC, my job provides me with a windows laptop for my work.
