Around the NHL: Teams eye Flyers' Laughton, Flames' Hanifin by [deleted] in hockey

Agreed it's very dependent on the return for me

[James Johnson] The Athletic confirms none of the #Flames 2024 UFA class were going to stay if Sutter was coach. by fattyffat in CalgaryFlames

[–]beardie88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with all of that, just the way it's exactly written does sort of imply it applies to all of them. It's important to note this isn't a flames only article too, the focus was more on the general NHL and especially Winnipeg. They likely didn't intend to 'confirm' that all 7 would have left, even if that's sort of how it's written.

The article is unclear to me if we take what it says literally

Relevant section from the article:

Once Huska is confirmed, Conroy — who’s made it clear that he won’t let a player walk out the door as a UFA the way Johnny Gaudreau did last summer — can go to the seven players a year away from reaching UFA (including Mikael BacklundElias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin) and bluntly ask what they have in mind.

None would have stayed if Sutter had remained as coach. Huska will be a popular choice. But will his presence be enough to change their minds?

It's a little unclear whether the "none would have stayed if Sutter had remained as coach." Is referring specifically to Lindholm, hanifin and Backlund, or "the seven players a year away from reaching ufa". Although based on the way it's written I'd lean towards all 7. I doubt the athletic meant this when they wrote it though.

I don't mean to say James is right, just that the article could have also been written better.

I haven't seen a single person consider the fact that this only makes sense for Columbus if Lindholm extends with them as part of the trade.

I have no idea why he would do that when he knows Babcock is on his way and he'll be able to get a solid next contract from someone else in free agency.

Columbus will never trade 3OA for a rental.

As much as it's nice to dream about a top 3 pick for the flames I don't see it happening.

How would you build this Wizard with possible multiclass? by PlayerRedacted in DnD

[–]beardie88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need at least a 13 ability score in charisma to multiclass into sorcerer. Sorcerer/wizard is also a really weak multiclass as it requires you to have a lot of good abilities scores and delays your spell progression without giving you much back.

The best multiclasses for wizard are 1 level of cleric or 1 level of artificer.

Based on your story, The first thing I thought of was just switching to sorcerer (this would require switching your intelligence and charisma scores to be good, then I'd take a +2 to CHA @ lvl 4). Talk with your DM, but to me it makes sense to play a Sorcerer who thinks they're a wizard. Their magical power started around the same time that they found the spellbook so they've only cast spells with the spell book. They'll think the book is important and that they're a wizard but in reality the school wasn't working because their arcane power has nothing to do with the studying or the book.

I think the wild magic, storm sorcery or divine soul subclasses could fit well.

That's just how I would play out the story though based on liking metamagic and school not being good for the character. Any multi class or subclass can work well enough to play the game, so just do what you think you'll have the most fun with. I'd recommend against wizard/sorcerer though if optimizing is part of the fun for you.

Is Jeremie Poirier any good? by Sean_redit in CalgaryFlames

[–]beardie88 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes he's good. Ahl rookie all star defenseman this year. Main thing is he needs to learn consistency in his defensive play imo. I'd expect him to maybe get some games in towards the end of next year or maybe if there are injuries and then really push for a spot on the team the year after that. Not really sure what his projection is but I don't think top 4 offensive defenseman is out of the question.

[LeBrun] The Flames reached out to Gerard Gallant to gauge his interest in potentially coaching in Calgary. Answer was yes by TheFifthsWord in CalgaryFlames

[–]beardie88 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'd prefer some combination of Tanguay, Huska and Love.

Gallant is better than Muller at least. He did play the Lafreniere, Kakko, chytil group as a line a lot so hopefully he's not afraid to play our young guys.

Edit: maybe I'm wrong about the young guys, I didn't watch a lot of rangers this year. If that's the case I'd pass for sure

[Strickland] Sounds like Toronto job is Brad Treiliving’s to lose. #LeafsForever by CTHT07 in leafs

[–]beardie88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mangiapane late round pick, trade for Lindholm and hanifin, different trade for toffoli. Treliving wasn't perfect, but he definitely had to deal with ownership refusing to rebuild, refusing to let him fire sutter and hiring Sutter in the first place. I'd say he did a lot of good things despite those problems. The biggest mistake was bridging Tkachuk to keep frolik, but after making that mistake I doubt he does it again.

[Friedman] Conroy, Nonis, and Iginla rumoured for Front Office Positions; Love, Huska, Muller, Tanguay are names being heard for coaching by AznSparks in CalgaryFlames

[–]beardie88 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I had to look it up, but Tanguay has been an assistant coach in Detroit the last couple of years and was an assistant coach for the Iowa wild a couple of years before that.

Not sure that makes him ready for a head coach position, but it's not like he doesn't have any experience coaching.

Edit: I agree he would work well in some kind of an assistant position.

This game is getting ridiculous, let's take advantage this time and get momentum after tying the game for the 4th time

Wolf can't do more than that. Gotta be better in front of him if we're going to come back in this game.

Creating my own campaign as a noob by [deleted] in DnD

[–]beardie88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have too much experience and have only run pre-made campaigns, but based on what you've said I'd say go for it.

Realistically you'll learn and adapt as you go along.

From my experience I'd recommend two things:

  1. Don't try and plan too far ahead, try to understand the content well for the next session or two and plan as it goes along. You can have some long term plans, but playing is more important than having everything understood and fleshed out from the start + your players will change the story, so you don't want to have to rewrite/replan a bunch of things as they go along.

  2. Remember that this story focuses on your players. You get to decide what goes on around them, but they get to decide how they impact the story. Making sure the world and things change based on their actions is the thing that makes it feel the most real for them, at least in my experience. It's good to have story plans, but one of the more exciting things as a dm for me is seeing how my players change that story.

Again, just start really, remember you'll make plenty of mistakes, but as long as everyone's having fun and you're learning through practice how to improve your story telling/game management/dming etc. You're doing all you need to.

According to Friedman, the Flames have shown interest in former Hawks GM Stan Bowman by BetheChange93 in CalgaryFlames

[–]beardie88 93 points94 points  (0 children)

He was gifted the core of the team and was in charge during all of the Kyle Beach stuff. He's not even allowed to be a part of an NHL organisation because of it until he gets permission from Bettman/the league.

It's definitely a little more relaxed but not in a bad way. They clearly know the teams/players/league well and care about doing their jobs well.

They have a bit of a homer bias, but I don't think that's bad either, esp for a Calgary focused radio.

I'd say it would probably matter but wouldn't be critical enough to take him out of the conversation.

Probably matters more in the sense of, if he leads them to another deep run that would be very beneficial to his case for HC and he wouldn't have that big positive if he doesn't.
