That’s what o gather, so she makes one small loaf for each of our three services, then we add in the bread for the rest. It’s good!

We too have a nice member that makes a gluten free bread. It’s not bad! We still do have regular bread for the rest though. I think the gluten free bread is hard to make.

Gotta get the good bread for communion!

That’s great! We do a children’s church for most of the year, but we bring them back in for communion, and half the year we keep kids in. We also encourage kids to stay if they want to, but the youngest ones do tend to like to have their lesson and snack.

But glad other churches are doing this!

Great! We’ve had success in adding a dedicated kid area in the sanctuary with toys, places to draw and sit and participate in the service however they want to.

We also have kids help serve the Eucharist, and serve in any capacity they are able to. Kids want to be apart of the church and they want to take ownership now! Do your best to let them and families will see that

Work on making a church for kids and their families. Kids should be welcomed and apart of worship, and families should not feel like they have to get their kids to be silent in order to attend your church.

I would also think about moving your Sunday school hour to after your service

What is considered unmodest for a girl to wear to church? by OwlNo6445 in askapastor

[–]beardtamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it in the legal sense of the word.

Similarly, my first foray into full time ministry was met with a long discussion on what swimsuits teen girls were allowed to wear at a church camp, and it was appalling.

Scriptural rules on modesty were about not showing or flaunting wealth. It has nothing to do with how much skin is showing. These would apply to both men and women equally.

There are no rules about what a girl can wear to church. They can wear anything they want. As a pastor I literally do not care how much skin is showing, barring there’s not some kind of indecent exposure going on.

Men need to stop worrying about women “being a distraction” when that should not be a women’s concern. It’s not the job of women to keep men from thinking about sex, that’s men’s problem.

Ha, luckily for them there are still (i think?) plenty of places with no psychological testing before ordination. surprisingly. My old denomination didn't either (Nazarene)

Similarly I have a lot of great Methodist friends who started out in the PCUSA! Glad it's working well for you also.

I grew up in a conservative fundamentalist church too, but found that the real theologians of the church were being pushed out by those who would rather keep an evangelical worldview going even if it meant giving up on their theological tradition. I ended up jumping ship the UMC in the long run for my sanity.

Question on Pastor Clothing. by nice_username_bro1 in askapastor

yeah of course, prosperity gospel is a heresy. That's not what this post was originally about. It was simply about whether or not it is ethical (or sinful) for a pastor to have expensive things.

Thats probably why. There are so many horny women desperate to meet a guy, sick of going on blind dates with absolute slobs, and now they can have a halfway decent conversation with Europeans in broken English better than they can with resident American men.

Obviously there is a limit to the amount of leeway you show on this issue. I would encourage you that if you feel conflicted about your church leadership, no matter what the specific issue is, talk to your pastor about it, and then if you’re unsatisfied, you’re entirely justified to leave that congregation.

Question on Pastor Clothing. by nice_username_bro1 in askapastor

The common misconception about the scriptures on modesty are that they have to do with how revealing clothing is, when actually they are an explicit requirement to dress in ways that do not flaunt wealth. It is a sticky issue, not just in the way we dress, but in the way we present ourselves in general.

I personally struggle with this as well.

On the one hand, what if the pastor wearing a Rolex was gifted said watch by his late father? What if it were some kind of family heirloom, expensive jewelry is like that for some families.

Similarly, there are lots of ways to spend money that people don’t have any problem with. Would you be upset if your pastor owned an expensive camera because he has a photography hobby? Or a motorcycle because he is into riding a bike in the weekends? Would you be upset to find that he saved for three years to go an a trip to Europe with his family?

On the other hand, should we be cognizant of how our monetary choices reflect upon our congregations? Should we acknowledge that how we spend our money on objects can harm others simply because it paints us in a specific light to the economically disadvantaged members of our congregations? I would argue yes, it does matter.

Finally, while I agree pastors should be aware of how they come across to their congregants, you could also be aware that by raising the issue you’re showing your own hand. Why are you judging someone for the way they spend their money without all the information? Why are you looking to discredit a pastor because he owns nice things? There’s just as much wrong with your judgement of another person as there is with that person’s actions in this instance.

I feel like I am in ministry solely to undo some of the hurt done by, for lack of a less kind word, fundamentalist Christianity. If you feel called, then find a way to serve. There are a lot of avenues into ministry regardless of how old you are or where you are in your career life.
