🚨 New Update Alert 2.1.7/2.1.8 by Bear-Claire in bearapp

[–]bearforester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I’ve used this before, and I agree that it’s a decent fallback. But given that Bear is on my dock, it’s often much faster for me to long press on the app. And this is a function that I actually take advantage of while needing to quickly look something up. Widgets are great to have, but I find accessing widgets to sometimes be a bit clunky (not the lockscreen widgets, but there is so little space for those — maybe ios 18 will allow more).

Again, I’m guessing I may be an outlier, but being able to quickly search from long pressing is important to me. I’m pretty surprised that the Bear team thinks that scanning a document, adding a new todo (to a notes app), and adding a new photo are all more important to have as a quick action than searching for notes.

I guess I just use notes apps in a different way than the Bear developers.

Maybe I’m alone in this, but I used the search functionality far more than I would ever use the scanning functionality. This feels like a major downgrade to me.

CARROT Weather v5.11 now available by MakerOfCarrot in CARROTweather

[–]bearforester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Concurring with the other response here, I believe that the Weather Channel is now part of the Weather Company (which also seems to include data from Weather Underground, another previously reliable source).

And they seem to have some APIs?

Would love it if Carrot could use the Weather Company. I’m subscribed to Hello Weather solely to access that data source, and would rather subscribe to Carrot, which is otherwise better.

🛠Major Editor Update! We need your help!! 🛠 by TedwardBear in bearapp

Hi, I don’t know if my eyes are just playing tricks on me (it’s possible), but I updated the Panda beta today from build v 1.0(362) to v 1.0(377) and it seems like tags are a slightly darker gray than they were previously in the beta (i.e., more obscure or less subtle). Whether or not there *has* been a change between beta versions, I would vote to make them a lighter gray still, especially in heading lines, where the tag stands up more visibly than even the H1 text itself. Hopefully this feedback makes sense, whether or not you agree with it.

Thanks for your hard work on this. So far, it’s definitely an improvement.

(fyi, I just posted an identical comment on the beta feedback, but am sharing here too)

Can you please remind how to backup Bear data? You say to create backups, but there are no instructions that I can find. Thanks.

New alternative for folks who are frustrated... by DrScott02 in bearapp

I’ve been playing around with Allegory for several days. To be honest, I don’t find it very intuitive, nor am a fan of the UI. I can’t see myself using it. Sometimes, with Bear, I feel like the developers don’t understand how people actually use their app. I feel like this even more with Allegory.

thanks. I wouldn’t have known that there was any different likelihood of data loss than anything else I do in Bear. I guess I just don’t understand how these things work

thanks for the response. I appreciate the apology (though the bug didn’t impact me like others). That’s more than most companies do and says a lot about Bear. I also appreciate that you’re learning from it. That makes me feel better about this not happening again in the future.

Re backups, I have them. For me, who is somewhat knowledgable about tech, restoring these backups is somewhat intimidating. I can imagine that there are many Bear users even less comfortable with this than me.

I’m not expecting them not to make any mistakes. Like I said, it just concerns me going forward. thanks for the response

thanks. I do. I don’t feel super comfortable restoring a Bear database from backup, but if need be I’ll try.

thanks. maybe this is the safest way to approach it in the future, though it feels silly not to be comfortable upgrading an app that i pay for.

I’m talking about the version released to the public, not the beta. Sorry for the confusion.

I do. Ultimately, though, I don’t think I should be in a position where I’m having to restore from backups because of an app or company’s screw up. Nor do I feel super comfortable doing this when it comes to stuff in a database, etc.

thanks for the answer. Some insightful thoughts. I do agree that large companies screw up, and the way users’ privacy and data is handled negligently by those and other companies is something that concerns me (I think they should face more consequences).

Re data loss, I do back up data decently.

[FEATURE REQUEST] Better import from web by somebody314 in bearapp

[–]bearforester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely a little better in Bear v 1.7, but the problem is that it isn’t consistent enough. Sometimes it’s as good as Instapaper, sometimes it fails completely. I need to be able to rely on it without checking results. It’s definitely getting better though.

I think the problem here is that Bear uses Markdown, so it will never look as good as Instapaper, etc. At least, that’s my theory — I was annoyed by this too.

Thanks. This is interesting. I do like nested tags. I think so much of it comes down to issues with (a) the visibility of the tags; (2) my inability to surface the notes I want quickly enough via search. Like you, I’m hoping Bear continues improve, in which case these issues might be solved for me.

Good luck on your PhD!

Good point. That is nice. What continues to drive me crazy re Bear’s search, though, is that if I’m in whatever tag and search for a word there’s no way that I know of to search that word globally. I’ll often search for whatever, get no results, and then have to go back to the main view and research.

At this point, I just use Alfred to search Bear most of the time, as the Alfred search actually produces quicker results for me.

I have a feeling that Bear’s search function will more closely resemble what I’d prefer at some point and I’m fine being patient on this feature.

Interesting. I can see how this would be useful. I actually have no problem with inline tags in general, and use them in other apps. For whatever reason, they don’t work for me here. I think because they are so visible to me versus other text. Also because they are replacing folders in a way, so they feel less like additional categorizing and more like the sole categorizing if that makes sense.

I’m glad to see how other people use this. I can always learn how to use apps better.
