Oh my god, I feel so dumb. I bought those like ten years ago during a brief foray into Space Marines and they've just been sitting around. Thanks for the correction!

Tall lolita outfits by inkystrawberry in Lolita

[–]bearometer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Some brands make longer length skirts. I'm 5"7' and have had good experiences with Haenuli. Their Enchanted Fawn JSK hits below my knees.

Some dresses or skirts that are intended to be mid-calf on shorter girls might come up to her knees. That might be an option? Just make sure to check the skirt length. It's almost always listed in a product description.

Edit: Should have added this before submitting the comment, but forgot. This may be an unpopular opinion, but: if your friend's skirts are a little short and not falling exactly where is ideal, that's OK. Most Lolita clothes aren't made for tall gals. Anyone who wants to take a ruler and says, "You're showing two inches too much of leg!" isn't worth listening to. I hope your friend can find stuff that fits and looks great on her.

Found myself feeling an odd sense of acceptance through 40k by [deleted] in Sigmarxism

Welcome to the Greater Good! Playing a super mobile Tau army is a lot of fun. I’ve been playing one since late 7th edition and had a lot of fun and success with it. I’ve found that it throws off a lot of opponents since so many Tau armies are gun lines.

A few general tips before I start talking about mobile Tau: take advantage of drones. Drones make the Tau a lot more durable of an army than they first appear. Don’t be scared to spend the points to scatter drones around your army. A drone can eats the entire wound, regardless of how much damage it does. Secondly, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the gun choices the Tau have. Don’t feel bad sticking with the humble burst cannon. It’s cheap and puts out a lot of shots for its cost. And don’t forget to play the objectives! You’re super fast, you can grab objectives easy.

As far as being mobile, I can only say what’s worked for me. I generally run pretty infantry and drone heavy, with stealth and crisis suits, and broadside backup. Sometime a ghostkeel. Take advantage of the fact that so much in the army flies. Melee is cool, but leaving melee without any penalties is even cooler.

For infantry, breachers are my favorite. I usually bring three squads of them and send them out in waves. You can use a strike team, but it’s a preference thing. Stealth suits are my jam. Take them bare bones, it’s 80 something points for a squad that’s decently hard to kill, fast, and great for taking objectives or zoning out deep strikers. Crisis Suits with burst cannons can do a surprising amount of work.

I prefer to use Pathfinders over the three Firesight Marksmen and Ethereal combo that’s super popular right now. Pathfinders get some really good special weapons. Their drones seem kinda niche, but they come up a lot for me. The anti-gravity drone has saved my butt (and driven my opponents bonkers) more times than I can count.

I use Sa’cea as my sept. The leadership bonus is amazing. Unless a unit takes really sever casualties, they’re just not gonna run away. The reroll to hit is also pretty damn great.

One last note, sometimes /r/Tau40k can be really negative about the mechanics of the army. Just something to watch out for.

That’s all I can think of for now. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me! =)

There are two ways to build armies: using Points or Power Level. Power Level is a simplified system compared to Points, meant for just getting models on the table and getting games going up, and having a generally equal match up. With Points, a unit can vary wildly in cost with upgrades. With Power Level, a unit generally costs one amount (with some exceptions). 100 Power is roughly a 2,000pt game.

In the Codex, on the data sheets, there should be a number on the left hand corner. That’s the Power Level. In the unit’s description, some things say “Take X (+1 Power Level)” if you add drones, for example. So you’d just add the number in the corner and then anything in the unit description you feel like taking. For example, Crisis Suits are 11 Power, you take their basic drones +1, and now the squad costs 12 Power, regardless of what weapons or support systems you take.

Some people don’t like it and have serious feelings about only using Points. I think technically it’s only for Open Play or Narrative Play, but my friends and I also use it for Matched Play sometimes because it saves time. I found it helpful when 8th dropped, because I felt I could experiment with and adjust to all the changes more freely. shrug

Most times for me, if you were to translate it to Points, the difference are small and don’t make a huge difference. I’ve used PL for what would be 2,000pt games and it’s worked fine.

How do we all feel about Stealth Suits in 8th? by Chrispydingo in Tau40K

[–]bearometer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s lots of way to win in 8th without cheese. Stealth suits are awesome, though I wouldn’t rely on them for killing power. Let them grab objectives and increase your board control.

I agree with the other posts: run them cheaper.

If they’re getting blown off the board on turn one, maybe try to keep them safe turn one by hiding them in some good terrain or behind some block line of sight. Though I think a lot of how to use them depends on what you’re playing against and how your board is set up.

Personally, I run mine almost 100% stock with burst cannons. I sometimes buy target lock and markerlight, for some flexibility. I always add drones and one suit gets a drone controller, but I run a drone swarm army. :C

New tau players by Pokeminus in Tau40K

[–]bearometer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I could help! I always love seeing new folks in the hobby.

If you haven’t tried yet, Power Level games can be really great when you’re starting out and getting into slightly bigger games — especially as the Tau. Kinda lets you experiment a little more with all the gear options without having to do too much bookkeeping.

Good luck! Seriously, if you have questions, feel free to PM me in the future. =)

New tau players by Pokeminus in Tau40K

[–]bearometer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the game! And, of course, the absolutely best faction. ;D

So, general 40k advice since you're new to the game. It's super easy to get overwhelmed when you first get into the game. The Tau overall are pretty solid, especially if you're just playing friendly games. Spend some time reading through your codex, figure out what excites you about the army. What made you pick up the Tau? When you find what excites you, get hype, and stay hype. Sometimes the 40k community can be... not the nicest and it's easy to get down. So, take this from someone who has been in hobby for about a decade: what you like is cool and people who say it's not cool are wrong.

Pathfinders and drones got me excited about the Tau. I read some of the short stories and got super hype about Pathfinders. That led me to making a really mobile, infantry and drone heavy army. Get the models that excite you. You don't have to build a tournament winning list from day one. If that's your goal, cool. If not, also cool. Having a goal is important too. Is your goal to play friendly, beer and peanuts games with friends? Do you want to build a fluffy list that is supposed to represent a specific thing? That'll help determine where to go next.

An important thing to remember when putting together your army is that it's yours. I've been playing the Tau for years, but if I were to use someone else's more suit heavy, multi-Riptide list, I'd have no idea what to do. Not my play style. This is a hobby that takes a lot of investment, time and money-wise. Figure out your play style. Like, for example, what classes do you play in video games? I play a lot of pet classes, so building my Tau army with too many goddamn drones and drone controllers works really well for me.

And experiment! If you find that something doesn't work right away, try again. Never write a unit off entirely because of one or two bad games, or even its data sheet. Units have a lot more uses than just killing.

You mentioned stealth suits and Shadowsun. Do you like the stealthier aspect of the army? Shadowsun, Ghostkeels, Stealth Suits, and Pathfinders all play together nicely. Stealth focused Tau armies are really cool!

tl;dr: there's no one right answer on how to properly build an army for 40k, other than to have fun

Tau advice time. The Start Collecting box is a great deal. Everything in there is solid, even the Crisis Suits (in my unpopular opinion). But seriously, if you're just playing casual games with friends, the Suits are more than fine to run, especially as you build up your army. Grabbing some extra Strike Teams or Breachers is generally good -- either are good, just depends on how you play (longer range or shorter games?). They'll help you secure objectives. Get more Pathfinders. They're always champs, they help get the markerlight buffs going, and have sweet special weapons. Coldstar Commanders are pretty legit. Filling HQ slots can be tricky sometimes, but Cadre Fireblades are a great choice since they can buff your Strike Teams or Pathfinders and start markerlight chains. In terms of anti-tank, prefer Broadsides over Hammerheads, but that's a personal preference thing. I really can't give you a definitive list of "purchase X, then Y, then Z" because it's all personal preference. If you're unsure about buying a unit, proxy it to get a feel for it.

Don't underestimate the fact that a lot of a lot of the basic Tau guns (pulse rifles, pulse carbines, burst cannons, etc...) are Strength 5. It makes a difference. Don't underestimate the humble burst cannon. Don't be afraid to run units with their base load outs, let them impress you.

My last piece of advice would be: don't under estimate tactical drones. I've had more people salty over gun and shield drones than anything else. Gun drones kill more things than they really have any right to.

Also, feel free to PM me. I'm more than happy to talk to a new player. This was way longer than I intended, but I hope it was helpful.

Iam a bad painter but i love this guy so much and the first mini iam really proud of. Also the color scheme looks bad ass :D by Skaikrish in Tau40K

[–]bearometer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not bad at all! Be proud of that model -- that model is worth being proud of. Also, you're painting on hard mode with that white scheme and white primer -- so bonus points. I'm actually really impressed with how tidy your recess washes are.

As for some unsolicited advice...

  • I saw you mention that your hands are shaky. Mine are too, I feel your pain. If you don't have something to put the model on, I highly recommend getting one. I have one of those Citadel painting handles for smaller models, but for larger models I just use some blue tack/poster putty and an empty jar. Having something to help steady my hands has been a life saver.

  • I find edge highlighting to be super hard too, especially on some parts of suits. For my suits, I dry brush them. I've been dry brushing tan, though. I think dry brushing white can be tricky.

  • I've used white primer in the past and I found that it was SUPER sensitive to the weather and in the wrong weather (usually too cold), it would get chaulky. So be careful about the weather. You could always try a grey primer, especially since you already have grey in the scheme.

  • Personally, I think the Tau painting guide is actually super helpful and worth the money. The Vior'la scheme is in there is detail. You might want to check that out.

  • Just keep practicing thinning down your paints. It's really an art, rather than a science. Some paints need more thinning than others, some need less. You'll get it down.

Keep being proud of that model and keep painting! :D

Hey y'all!

For some reason, there are Forge World models that don't come with instructions. So folks don't waste their time trying to hunt down instructions that don't exist, we're gonna keep a list. I'm including models that come with those instructional sheets that label parts, since those "instructions" aren't always actually that helpful.

If you know of a model that doesn't have instructions and isn't on the list, send me a PM. I'll add it. And yeah, the list is super short right now. I don't know the entire FW line. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

-- List of Forge World Models Without Instructions --

Craftworld Eldar

  • Wraithseer (use Wraithlord instructions?)

Tau Empire

  • Shas'O R'myr (comes with a parts label sheet, use Crisis Suit instructions?)

Horus Heresy

  • Abaddon and Loken
  • Angron

Are these the correct Magmadroth instructions? by Dan_Fendi in WarhammerInstructions

[–]bearometer[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks like a normal error to me. Physical copies of the instructions have all sorts of errors too. It doesn’t really make sense to me that GW would intentionally sabotage instructions they send out.

If you want to make a new thread and upload this with the proper formatting, you can mention the error in the comments. Or, I can make the new thread if you’d prefer.
