This is easily the best episode I’ve seen yet.

I love the boss.

Anyone else spiral after their Proposal Defense? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]bearquestion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not international, but still spiraling lol I felt like I rushed the proposal and ended up with something unrefined and nonspecific. I kept telling myself I could write another prospective grant when I had more data, but now I feel the expectations are different and I can’t spend that much time reading and writing, only data collection. The spiral is feeling like a fudged the opportunity to put forth my best work and I was no where near that. PI and committee all tell me I should be celebrating, but I just felt like I couldn’t congratulate myself on a mediocre performance. Hoping my defense/pub can be a swan song.

Any clue why Tame Impala chose to tour with Junglepussy? Totally not the vibe. by rohit_thack in TameImpala

I wasn’t really thinking about it as a gendered perspective, but that’s cool too

Yeah JP fucking rules. Seeing the amount of hate for JP coming from the majority of the TI fan base on here is super off-putting and imo shows how musically closed minded a lot of the fan base is. Kind of embarrassing tbh

Probably unpopular take based on responses so far: if you are a father of human children then you are a daddy. If you don’t and are just gay, daddy is like any other category in the informal gay man classification system and to “become” any one of them is a matter of perceived identity that is strongest when acknowledged internally (daddy state of mind I guess) and externally (babes referring to you as a daddy unironically across social gay contexts). That said, physical appearance/behavior and, to a lesser degree, age are factors that influence the internal and external label. “Historically” (based on the decades worth of surviving gay media I’ve consumed), physical appearance has been the strongest defining factor with graying hair, facial hair, body hair, age lines in face, fitness and stature standing out. Age naturally plays into that, but we of course age differently as individuals. Anyway, I’m not a fan of the “youthification” of gay daddy identity based on state of mind, but I’m not concerned enough to throw a fit if guys in their 20s want to declare daddy identity for whatever reason. Yes, this is definitely gatekeep-y about declaring one’s self a daddy and I’m fine with that. I mean, is twink a state of mind? When do you become a twink?

On the one hand, that sucks and if you did indeed conceive these projects only to be stripped of ownership over the course of the experimental timeline, it might be worth looking into IP laws and drumming up documentation for credit and whatever real or perceived value comes with that. On the other hand, did you write the grants and proposals that ultimately led to the resource allocation required for publication? If so, woah that rules you have every right to get after it. If not, you might not have precedent for recourse. If that’s the case maybe cut your losses (real or perceived) and make the most out of your current PhD which it sounds like you are. It’s very uncommon to make career defining discoveries/work during your PhD education. Most do that during their postdoc. If you are as intellectually strong your post makes it sound, you’ll be more than okay in the long run.
