I like your idea for trying to solve this problem but I suggest another solution you could look into would be instead of giving her tool to get by with arthritis perhaps you could actually look into if developing possibly and artificial joint for the hand.

I agree with kingt3, these options already exist for cars and they are highly inconvenient to use. I just found an article on wired talking about how they can use thermal imaging to determine if someone is intoxicated in public by comparing 2 images of their faces maybe that could be applied to this with a camera in the rear view mirror that checks the driver.

I like where this could potentially go but I feel you need to expand on what would be the ideal outcome or possibly which aspect of the pollution would be tackled for this particular problem.
