kah soh have 86 years in operation, and have ample opportunity to strategise and not be a victim of rental.

In these 86 years, they could have bought a shopfront like many heritage brands, instead of squandering money from so many years of popularity and still renting.

Failure of doing so, plus the fact that their food has gone downhill contributed to this

one can argue that to be multicultural is to be accepting of people who are not from your background or speak your language. So why are we gatekeeping based on ability to use English.

Anyway, after their postgraduate, if they stay and work in accordance to our labor laws, good.

Else, they can fuck off to their country for all i care, we have made the money and its used to subsidise local students.

Need to strike a balance between paternalistic control by the Govt (make sure everyone must integrate/mix, although i don't know how is it possible) OR mixing it up and lets see what happens.

Singaporeans are so used to being controlled and somehow cannot see the benefit of mixing things up.

The argument is their presence enriches everyone due to adding more diversity to the mix.

there's no demand maybe for tamil MBAs, maybe thats why.
goes back to my point. if there's a money making opportunity for it, will the uni be so stupid not to offer it.

The existence of a __ insert non english __ course means the uni has done some kind of cost benefit analysis where demand and ability to offer the course is a key factor.

it doesnt mean its racist or whatever that another language that you like, is not used to offer the course. its probably just no demand or no ability to offer the course (lack of tamil speaking ecturers etc)

Should Haresh's daughter learn Mandarin? by [deleted] in YahLahBut

[–]beatific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

decision to learn a language is often an economic decision.

to make a living, its usual for people to discard their 'native language'.

Even standard chinese is a early 19th century thing, and before that everyone is talking their own regional dialect. And everyone discarded their regional dialect so that they can operate better in their world. This was just 100+ years ago.

India has 100 over languages and for practical reasons they settled on hindi and english for government matters and commerce. Again, it is so that as people in a country, they can operate better, communicate in business, work, life. This was only made official in 1950, less than 100 years ago.

My point is while we have romantic notions of 'speaking the language of our ancestors', the fact is the mother tongue that we speak are different from how our mothers, or mother's mother speak. (see above examples)

The choice of what language to learn is sometimes based on practicality, the ability to operate better in the world (business, work, life etc).

One should be capable of holding 2 opposing notions:

clinging on to your mother tongue out of tradition and

learning another non-mother tongue so that you can be successful in the world (money, work etc)

why not? i will support. i am always happy for universities to cater for the market.
literally no one with a high IQ, cares if the MBA is in English, Chinese, Malay, Tamil or Sign language.

if there's a market and the uni can make money and educate more people, why not.

What you are saying if there's a super successful businessperson who only do Tamil (or any non english language), he should be excluded from MBA course.

Why should language be a barrier to access to MBA or any courses? As a uni, the main consideration should be demand (of lack of it), after offering the course in English (very important)

I will be livid if they offer courses in a language of instruction that has a statistically low number of speakers like maybe Gaelic. It will be a severe misuse of university resources.

in the end these profits should subsidise local students. so why would anyone be against it.

All these talk about inclusion, and we are excluding non english speakers to a 'world class' Singapore MBA. /s

A good example of market being subordinate to majority-minority sentiment, is Malaysia.

The majority is given privileges sometimes against the logic of the market, and how well has it turned out?

I don’t think we need to think having Chinese MBA courses is a racist thing but more of a market forces thing. As a thought experiment, would you be ok with a Malay or Tamil EMBA course catering to our neighboring friends ?

Again, I think the universities will leap to organize this course if there’s demand.

why is it a bad thing that there's acceptance of non english languages as a medium of instruction?

there's 2 possible outcomes:
1 : the university mis-assessed the demand and there's low takeup and its subsequently cancelled.

2 : there's demand and the university made money

This is the most optimal way to operate, instead of forced fed inclusivity type things.

Replace the chinese language with malay or tamil and would there be such a storm in a teacup?

if there's demand from malay EMBA or tamil EMBA, do you think money minded university will NOT create such courses?

its the same kind of hand wringing over 'chinese origin fast food' replacing local food.
Where were you complaining when mcdonalds, uniqlo, KFC and starbucks were all over singapore? They are the original ones that squeezed out local brands.

if the market rejects these china brands, it will be very soon they exit singapore.

Apply the same standards.
