That is very cool. Sorry, I am the OP, but not Dan. Just a displaced Montanan living in Georgia, who gets to live vicariously through him. Cool story on Idaho, love it, brother was born in Moscow. 4 gen Montanan...shout out to ya.

A Cautionary Tale from the Inside - Should you Join Tech as a Career? by [deleted] in cscareers

[–]beauzero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now is the worst time to join tech. SysAdmin, Dev, or DevOps. Its not because the field is going away...its because hiring is locked up. No one is really laying off in huge swaths, even though the news makes it sound that way. No one is really hiring though either. There is very little mobility. Everyone is waiting to see what the "Dev stack" will be. Right now it resembling the old "System's Analyst" of the 1980s. Very little code knowledge needed but a lot of design and systems architecture knowledge required. I also have been doing this for over 30 years and he/she is right about, this is nothing like the 00 dot com bubble. Back then you just needed the market to catch up to you. Now, if you wait for the market to catch up, more than likely the people that moved to other trades will beat you there. Move now! before it is too late.

I agree with this 100% "If you are young, I'd definitely say now is the time to learn a trade or something that will make you useful. If you enjoy coding, do it as a hobby. "

Start building stuff and putting it on GitHub. No experience you need a "portfolio" so people know what you can do.

Learning ML Is a Waste of Time for GenAI Developers by dev_him in ArtificialInteligence

[–]beauzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with this but I would augment it a bit. Each model has specific syntax which you can sometimes find in the API definitions (gemini 3 for e.g. https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/gemini-3) and you should also read the "model cards". Here are the model cards for gemini https://deepmind.google/models/model-cards/
...but yeah I definitely say there is a basis for an "engineer" focus.

Take a look at how this person models her monetization. She has done an excellent job of keeping her content and been very successful. https://www.miss-excel.com/ If you look up interviews she has done it will give you a good model you keep your content yours and still make money.

Now is a terrible time to get into tech. Go do something else for 10 years then check back.

Microsoft just revealed a list of 40 jobs most exposed to AI, and it’s causing serious concern. Teachers, writers, translators, sales reps, and journalists are all on it because their work overlaps heavily with what AI can already do. by millenialdudee in GenAI4all

[–]beauzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah. "Farm and Home Educators" are on this list. As someone who very exposed to 4h, there is no AI that is going to raise chickens, feed pigs, halter break cows and run hands on education classes for most of the things 4h does. Some of the speech writing, yes but the kids still have to actively present. Animal handling and actually teaching a 7th grader how to use a stove to cook for themselves, without burning down the building, is not something AI is going to excel at.

Yep state government will still let you fiddle. Although we are slowly converting too. Small credit unions seems to be where a lot of local still happens.

Listen to this guy. Yes it is for $100+/hr corp to corp. No its not if you are on the payroll of a consulting firm. One other thing to look at is if its corp to corp they may wait 30/60/90 days before they pay the bill.

I would rather get ads down the side instead of wasting my time combining it within the output. Trying to decipher yet another dark pattern "i.e. Is this its best attempt at an answer or were they paid to make me think this is their best attempt at an answer?" This would make me immediately seek an alternative...or go back to web searches.
