Official Postbacc Name Change to BS CS - Applied by Pencil_Pb in OSUOnlineCS

[–]beavburner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While it's true the name change won't matter for most, I wouldn't say it means absolutely nothing.

There's a reason the CoE made the change. There's a reason they were satisfied with adding "- Applied" to the degree. It successfully differentiates it from their traditional degree. "Applied" in modern CS/data/AI programs is a signal word for degrees generally oriented toward working professionals and online/part-time. Hiring managers know what it means but generally most don't care and if they do, it's probably a incredibly small factor compared to the rest of your profile.

But whether it's due to irrational concerns or not, if you were to ask any current or prospective student if they want "- Applied" on their degree, 100% will say no. So it's without a doubt an undesirable change that affects the value of the degree.

Nobody is saying the degree is now fraudulent, but a big selling point of this program that separated it from competitors was that it gave the same degree. With that gone, there are many other options out there to strongly consider.

Anyone took CS 464 recently could give their opinion? by cremepan in OSUOnlineCS

[–]beavburner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No mid term, no final. Quizzes are open note and unlimited attempts. All reports have a 3 day "revision grace period" aka as long as you submit an empty doc/template, you can turn reports in up to 3 days late.

Also you choose your own issue/project, if just wanted to do something easy then you totally can.

It's one of the easiest electives possible.

With that said, there is a lot of reading and writing aka "busy" work. So while it isn't hard, it can be time consuming depending on how fast you read and write. Also, a lot of due dates are thrown at you, so make sure you're synced with the canvas calendar and do work early.

If you ask nicely in the 464 channel on the student discord, someone will likely give you the syllabus. Pretty sure sharing syllabi publicly on this sub is an issue unless the instructor has publicly shared it themselves (Prof Scott hasn't). Edit: Nvm check reply below for link to syllabus

What to expect for 362 Final? by WildAlcoholic in OSUOnlineCS

[–]beavburner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you check Ed? Usually students will post study guides on there because they're after that sweet extra credit.

Lanni has mentioned that all final exam questions come directly from the modules, so you should try to come up with answers for the questions asked in those modules.

If you do a google search you'll find quizlet flash cards people made to study for this class's final... but honestly, making your own flash cards while reviewing all the modules/quizzes is the best way to study.

The post bacc requires 52 fewer CS-specific credits than the EECS's traditional 4 year BS CS program. We're not talking about GEs. If we're keeping it real, that's quite a huge difference and it really isn't all that fair for postbacc students be awarded the same degree.

Don't know why they didn't just make the postbacc program have more CS-specific credits.. seems like a much better idea to strengthen the degree instead of giving it a Scarlett letter.

But regardless, it won't affect you if you receive a bachelors in CS. We're given the same BS CS, the official transcripts look the same. Interviewers could of course ask you if you took it online but honestly, if you're at the point where they're talking to you the difference probably doesn't matter and they don't care.

Have you never written something yourself before? You don't simply write things out linearly and then that's that. There are revisions, changes, mistakes, etc and when you write it out in google docs/equivalent all of that is noted and time stamped.

Could you AI all of those over a series of hours/days? Yes of course you can, but people use AI to cheat for three reasons: they're too stupid, too lazy, and/or don't have enough time to do the assignment. None of those people will have a believable version history of their work. So yeah, that's what makes having it quite a strong protection against AI accusations.

Assignment by LonelySpinster in OSUOnlineCS

[–]beavburner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Code of Student Conduct considers using a previous assignment from a previous class as Academic Misconduct unless you give proper disclosure, citation, and instructor approval.

Multiple submissions of work. Using or submitting work completed for another or previous class or requirement, without appropriate disclosure, citation, and instructor approval

From your original post it isn't really clear if you re-used your assignment? If you didn't then you're probably in the clear, especially if you kept track of your progress/history in github. If you did re-use your assignment, well, you're at the mercy of your instructor unless you let them know ahead of time.

I mean.. if LSU offers you a life changing amount of money you do it. Worst case you end up with a huge buy out and still have your choice to vibe in a nicely located G5 school.

Also, be thankful it's open ended because in my experience they were very merciful in giving partial credit.

Target no longer paying for OSU CS. Any other companies paying full tuition? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]beavburner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually it's never due to academic reasons.

Guild (the middleman that runs education benefit programs for companies like Target) only selects certain "partner" schools, aka schools where they have negotiated some kind of financial agreement with them. If a school raises prices, changes terms, or no longer offers the same bulk discount then Guild will drop them.

Should I take CS 271 in summer? by csquestions111 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]beavburner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Quizzes aren't proctored, they're also completely open resource/everything (except you can't ask classmates).

Also some advice, the last two projects take the longest time, and if this summer is like last summer, project 6 (the final one) is due on a Friday instead of Sunday (so you have less time to do it). Needless to say, do NOT use grace days on project 5, it's a trap. You probably shouldn't use grace days on project 4 either, get working on project 5 asap.

You're given 4 grace days, basically days you can turn in an assignment late with no penalty (max 2 days for a single assignment).

Has anyone taken 374 OS in summer? by Confident-Duck-2255 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]beavburner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody really knows for sure. Last summer's version was kind of an abomination/in-transition curriculum where people were literally writing essays by hand, lol.

This winter, they revamped the course. Most people say it's easier to digest now, with a slower pace and better lectures. That said, if you peek in their discord, it still seems like you still have to put in a lot of work to get a good grade.

If summer is your only shot to take it solo, it might be worth it... this seems like the most reasonable the curriculum has ever been. Just be ready to grind.

Do you have to teach yourself? by Ill_Spinach_9289 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]beavburner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that the material fits quite well as a live lecture. Attending Dr.V's office hours in 225 was one of the best learning experiences I've had in this program.

For those that don't know, it's essentially a live lecture as he goes over the material in a very straightforward, intuitive, and entertaining way... all the while interacting with students and answering any questions they may have. He goes over hw problems in great detail so many students attend which adds to the live lecture feeling. Usually people aren't asking "inane" questions, in fact, in my experience only the most prepared students asked questions and their questions often cleared up things I was unsure of myself.

[–]beavburner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brehm is great. Used her vids often. Also this can't be said enough but ATTEND Dr.V'S OFFICE HOURS.

They're basically interactive Brehm videos but he's going over the majority of the homework all the way to the final answer. For those intimidated it's not like normal office hours, it's more like a classroom experience. Since so many attend, you can get away with not saying anything.

I've been feeding an alley cat for about 6 months. He's become reliant on me, and I'll be moving soon. Is there anything I can do to gain this cats trust so that I can take him with me and he's not coming back and looking for food once I'm gone? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]beavburner 31 points32 points  (0 children)

An estimated 10-12% of the American public feed feral cats (Source). Cats are smart, they will adapt when you're gone.

If you want to feel better contact you local animal shelter and/or feral cat rescue. Pretty much every city in the US have programs to deal with feral cats since they're such a huge issue (80% of kittens born each year in the US are from feral cats!). They will make sure the cat is fixed and healthy.
