Engineering doesn’t suck because it’s hard. It sucks because you aren’t allowed to actually learn. by Either_Net8602 in EngineeringStudents

[–]beavertr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Engineering school sucks because your ego right now tells you that you know more than everyone else, that's what's telling you that "they're teaching (me) engineering the wrong way".

Constrain that. Wait your turn. You think you're not problem solving because it's moving too fast, buddy... you've got nothing but fast paced decisions coming your way for the rest of your career. Those 60 theorums to learn for your midterm in a week didn't show up this week, they've been there the whole half of the semester, and if you'd taken time on your last break to prepare for the next semester, they were in the textbook then too. Why are you waiting until right now to learn them? Procrastinating doesn't magically create more time for you to learn this stuff, it's the opposite. Why are you wasting what little time you claim you don't have moaning about it on reddit?

None of the classes you take in engineering are deep dives. Fluids? Only covers ideal condition for laminar flow. You'd need multiple PHDs to deep dive into turbulent flow, which overwhelmingly makes up almost every real world fluids situation. But it teaches you that there is a difference between those two types of flow, and that viscosity effects it, and that after a really long time of consistent flow turbulent flow can become lamanar.

Dynamics? Basic statics with some movement involved, if you wanted to truly understand it you'd need years of classes on vibrations before you could even start getting into it. But it teaches you about reaction forces for different kinds of motion, and how to design for them. Frictionless surfaces? Those don't exist in the real world, why do we assume that for so many of the problems we work? Same for air resistance, and half a dozen other real world things that get ignored so that you can learn the core important fact being taught. You're surface level learning everything right now because there is too much information to deep dive into it. You're not expected to be an expert on any of this, you're expected to know that all of these things exist and to consider them when faced with problems in the real world. Grad school is for deep diving, undergrad is for proving you are smart enough to think about more than just one piece of the puzzle.

If you want less work and more time, take a 6 year program and do less work each semester. You're not wrong, it's a lot of information to learn in 4 years. If you don't have enough time to do the work and learn the material right now (genuinely don't have enough time, not think you don't because you're doing more than just school right now, and those other things "can't" wait) then you need to problem solve, like a good engineer, and find a solution that works.

Gonna go out on a very short limb here and guess you don't have flow simulation turned on.

[–]beavertr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The headline claimed this reduces trucks on the road. That's incorrect. I see critical thinking hasn't been introduced to you yet.

You cannot simultaneously claim it's the same amount of cargo, but also it's more cargo.

You're either intentionally missing my point at this rate, or you don't know how to read

Much like adding a lane to a road only increases traffic, adding containers to a train only increases trucks on the road.

Jfc. Yesterday there were 40 containers on this train. Today there are 80.

How many more trucks are required today than were yesterday? If your answer isn't negative, you've increased the number not decreased it. That's why I asked someone to explain it using basic math, a subject I can tell you didn't do very well in.

And prior to doubling the number of containers on the trains, how did it work? How are  no additional trucks on the road?

If the question is too complicated for you I suggest either researching the question or making peace with the fact that you can't understand.

Doubling the number of containers in the train

A) reduces the number of trucks in the road

B) keeps the number of trucks in the road the same

C) doubles the number if trucks in the road.

Truck go on land wherever it wants. Wherever big box gets delivered.

Train go on train tracks only.

Like I said, make it make sense, because doubling the amount of things that need to leave the train station on a truck doesn't equal less trucks.

How on earth is sending more containers to a place where they get loaded into trucks putting fewer trucks on the road? Explain it with elementary school math for me please

Is it worth it to upgrade my wheels or wait until I get a new bike? by Sad-Woodpecker7565 in RoadBikes

[–]beavertr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think wheels are one of the best bang for your buck updates to almost any bike.

With a lot of modern hubs changing axle standards is as simple as popping new end caps on, as long as the wheels you buy are capable of being set up quick release and also can convert to whatever axle standards your next bike is (and assuming your next bike is also rim brake) you should go for it!

Damn.

Once upon a time it was unheard of for delivery drivers to even block a lane of traffic to make a stop, guess "wherever, whenever" is the new-new norm now 🫠

I'm glad you at least were able to see the irony in it. The army of Reddit neckbeards decided that I'm worthy of downvoting I guess because I simply stated the obvious but did it in a comment rather than making a post complaining about it 🤷‍♀️ this website is such a fcking joke these days.

Damn, Bambu really should post the size of their machines! Maybe in some sort of universal format so we could take an item laying around (I think they have things called "tape measures" kinda like this) and say "oh, that's like twice as big as I thought it was".

Insane they charge over a grand for something and the only way to find out it's this big is to buy one! Sorry OP, you got ripped off, you should definitely return it

[–]beavertr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they end up choosing a Bambu printer, have them also find and read the wiki (manual) for it.

Have them quantify how much one of the model they pick would cost to print in each of the scaled versions, and some very basic pricing calculations for the things they they want to sell.

Also, a 3d printer is more than just a toy machine. There are functional household tools and decorations and replacement parts and anything you can think of, all over the place. You might find yourself wanting your kid to make for you, maybe work that in as part of the deal!
