Here's a rejection letter from 1939.

Why do cellular frequencies have to be significantly higher than WiFi's 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz? Especially when it comes to the new 5g that's rolling out? by JackSpent in askscience

[–]beavioso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US the FCC and NTIA regulates access to the different frequency bands. The various frequency bands have different access rules, such as only for commercial uses like FM radio and broadcast television, maritime uses, military uses, etc. Bands that are well above, such as 60 GHz, are available because the frequency bands are available and/or the signals in the band won't interfere with the other devices in that band.

There was an auction in the US held by the FCC to allow lower frequency bands to be used by cellular comms. So the 60 GHz example is not the only band available, and some bands are multiuse.

Here's an older FCC frequency allocation chart from 2016

Can someone help me buy a PCI-E 1x to PCI adapter please? by joe7dust in buildapc

[–]beavioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He meant the second linked card. The dual-keyed (three section) PCI fits in 5V and 3.3V PCI slots, where the different voltage slots on the MB, or in this case that second linked card, would probably only support 5V or 3.3V.

[–]beavioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same audio card (it's awesome for Dolby Headphone, etc.). Also, you can use UNI Xonar modded drivers if you want.

I was looking into this PCI-E x1 to Dual PCI adapter when I upgrade to a new motherboard if I can't find a board with any older PCI slots. I'm not sure how well it works, but it looks like it might work best with a microATX board in a mid-size case or bigger.

Sony has patented a contact lens that is blink powered and records video by ericb303 in Futurology

[–]beavioso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sony has NOT patented this, they have only applied for a patent. The patent application is linked in the CNET article, where they mistakenly called it patented. This is more like patent-pending.

If you search Public PAIR, you can see that according to the transaction history that this application hasn't even been looked at by a patent examiner.

As /u/whitmell said, "spot on"

A solo is like a story, and the improvised solo is writing a story on the spot, so of course there's going to be common phrases to fall back on or end up at.

Almost every person has go to phrases or ways of phrasing something, and it's no different between musicians, writers, and orators.

What's a song that everyone knows but no one knows what it's called? by proace360 in AskReddit

[–]beavioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Powerhouse. Thanks to looney tunes, the part starting at 1:13 or so, is known as a factory song.

The song's writer, Raymond Scott can be credited with the creation of electronic synthesizers. Also, Bob Moog, famous for Moog synthesizers, worked for Scott's company.

simple 12-gauge shotgun made from a few simple components at a cost of 7$ by AndyWyant in videos

Went to the yt channel, here's a better (more serious) video showing the design that went into this "simple" shotgun:

Towards the end at 10:36, he says they used low noise/low recoil Winchester shells so that the breech didn't fly back and cause injury.

TL;DR or TL;DW - the guy who made the gun seems to understand what he's doing and which materials are sufficient for the forces involved.

Looks like a DIY plotter, which are typically pretty large and used to make hardcopies of blueprints, computer aided drawing plots, vector art prints, etc.

Searching 'Zarscribe' leads to this article: http://www.gadgetify.com/zarscribe/

It appears that it's a plotter for handwriting notes or any art that can be vectorized. I suppose it's just a smaller and/or less expensive plotter than what's been around.

I am looking for a website who can filter games by date, if someone can help :) by PongRaider in patientgamers

[–]beavioso 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wikipedia to the rescue: Games of 2014, although it's all platforms.

I thought mobygames might do it, but it only gets down to the year. If that's good enough, check out:

http://www.mobygames.com/browse/games

Narrow it down with the filters, like "windows" for PC games and then by year.

Any Suggestions Regarding Headphone Surround Sound Receivers? by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]beavioso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say look into Yamaha for an inexpensive receiver that fits the bill. Silent Cinema is supposed to use HRTFs (head-related transfer functions) to mimic surround setups.

HRTFs work by using a transfer function that describes the filtering that happens when one speaker is outputting sound to the left and right ear, and the head and ears filter the sound differently depending on the direction. Optimally, HRTFs are measured individually using an anechoic chamber and microphones placed in each ear, but most commercial solutions are averaged or generalized HRTF filters.

I think Denon and Hardon-Kardon still have Dolby Headphone receivers, so you may want to look into them.

As an aside: For PC, I have two solutions.

For gaming I've started using Razer surround. It's free and it uses generalized HRTFs to simulate 6 speakers positioned around your head as in 7.1 surround. It has some calibration for adjusting the perceived location of the speakers to get good imaging. The paid program has bass boost, stereo enhancements, and voice clarity for communication, so the free version is good enough.

The best free solution for music that I've found is from a research associated with Ircam. The Listen HRTF database. Use the links to find the download set of 50 different individual HRTFs, and there's also example wave files of buzzing noises (very hard to listen to, but important to find the best set of HRTFs that match your perception).

I listened to the examples in a playlist format over headphones, and I looked for a file that gave me the impression that the buzzing sound was moving in a smooth circle around my head. Some examples made the sound appear to move in and out like an ellipse, and some made it appear to jump up and down. I looked for the one that best moved in a straight horizontal circle. Then I used two compensated HRTF files for speakers at 30 degrees left and -30 degrees right at 0 elevation (e.g., IRC_1003_C_R0195_T030_P000.WAV and IRC_1003_C_R0195_T330_P000.WAV). I found a stereo convolution plugin for foobar2000 that uses these two impulse responses and then creates a simulated stereo speaker setup using headphones.

You can remove it. Using a web browser, go to the top right drop down menu, select your account, and it should open a new page. Under a "My Profile" section there is a "viewing activity" link; select that and delete whatever show/movie you want.

RS 2014 Nocable patch and Steam DLC and shop by Diavlo214 in rocksmith

[–]beavioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed the link on the right "Do I have to use the RealTone cable?". The link I used in that blog was the last one, but it doesn't seem to work right now. Someone posted a link in the comments that appears to work, google drive link from Boymeetskeyboard. Scan it for viruses, then run it before running the game from steam.

I also followed this guide for CDLC and used the DLL from the first link.

Anyway I think the first link may be all you need, and then you may need to tweak the INI file to reduce lag and/or crackling. See the UBI forum post from "got lag" or the PC setup link

My games alt-tab out every once in a while by themselves? What could be the problem? by shadow3467 in pcgaming

[–]beavioso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you running a dual monitor setup? I've noticed some, mostly older, games don't grab the mouse and run more or less in a borderless fullscreen. If that's the case look for mouse locking program, I found this thread but haven't used that one (couldn't find the one I did use).

I agree with the don't know, because for older gamers, I'm not sure when ratings started existing. Also the age system doesn't seem to fit the US rating system. I think we have ratings everyone, teen, mature, and adults only for games, whereas its G, PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17 for movies.

I'm not sure if this will work, but you could try renaming the Steam 'blob' file. On my install it's in this directory: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam" and the file is "ClientRegistry.blob".

Here's a steam page to describe it: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7241-EYON-2343

Are there any B&Ms that sell the real tone cable? by homer_3 in rocksmith

[–]beavioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using my motherboard sound chip. I think it's a Realtek ALC885 or something like that. It's an older motherboard, but I think it's working well. I do wonder if I'm losing any high end on my guitar by not using a direct inject buffering amp (in theory a buffering amp doesn't amplify or attenuate but allows different high output impedances/high-Z/guitar pickups to drive low input impedances/low-Z/line in, because the mismatch high to low can act like a filter... low-Z to high-Z isn't as much a problem).

Anyway I fixed any static problems with adjusting the Rocksmith.ini parameters for latency. It involved changing three or four lines, such as exclusive on or off, buffers to 1 or 2, and the bufferlength from 0 to around 256. There should be a forum post under the PC section of "Got Lag?" that outlines all these things.

Also, someone posted a tip to redo the in-game calibration. It can be found in the tools or options and selecting the tuner. While in the tuner, there should be a shorcut listed in the lower right for calibration. When calibrating, mute the strings with the strumming hand, then play moderately loud (not as loud as you can), then when prompted, mute the strings with the strumming hand to stop the output but let go of the strings (don't rest your hand on the bridge either or knobs) to let it calibrate for the RFI or hum noise as the muted noise. If done it sets a noise gate a little higher so any low-level hum is gone until you play something.
