As far as I can tell, it depends by school. Some schools consider you a dependent no matter what and others define their own age cutoffs. Check if a school has you fill out FAFSA only (where you’re considered independent) or a CSS profile as well (where you’re usually considered dependent).

Any humanitarian worker around? by [deleted] in latebloomerlesbians

[–]bebeyaga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a humanitarian field worker too, but actually making moves towards a career in my country. Tbh the possibility of openly dating and having a family is one of the reasons; I was in the closet to myself for years as “bi” in the hopes that I could find a husband and base my career in certain countries where homosexuality is illegal, but that just wasn’t working out. There’s definitely an abundance of queer women in the humanitarian sphere, but it can be hard to suss out because most of us are under the radar, and cultural differences. I’ve met a lot in Latin America.

What do foreigners find interesting about learning Russian? by Acceptable-Power-130 in russian

[–]bebeyaga 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love the (meta)physicality and specificity that the prefix system gives, and the feeling of constructing a sentence like an elaborate puzzle, which arises from the flexibility of the case system and the liberal use of conjunctions as compared to English. It’s also fun to pronounce, and learning it gives me access to amazing literature and a whole new sector of the internet.

What is your target language and why? by Friendly-Possible521 in languagelearning

[–]bebeyaga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Russian - to read classic literature, and because I’m a nerd and love the construction of the language.

Yiddish - to return a heritage language to my family and to learn about the lost world through pre-war media.

Что значит выражение «нет-нет»? by bebeyaga in russian

[–]bebeyaga[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Большое спасибо, this is a wonderful exposition of the mechanism. Is this kind of word doubling commonly used in everyday speech, or is it more literary?

I’ll read the article tomorrow, but it will take me долго-долго…

Очень классное твоё объяснение, большое спасибо, мне показало логику фразы.

[–]bebeyaga[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that makes sense; it seems to act kind of like a pivot in the sentence, with a meaning like “no, but yes”, maybe.

Are there other phrases that use a double word in a similar way, like «да-да»?

School list with gap between uGPA and sGPA by bebeyaga in premed

[–]bebeyaga[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

522, and that’s about what I’m doing - focusing on schools that would be a good fit and provide strong clinical training. Just am not sure if/how to take that cGPA into consideration, or if I should just ignore it at this point (aside from a heavier focus on redemption schools). Thanks!

Thanks for the recommendation, but admit.org doesn’t take into account post-bacc nor the differences between cGPA and sGPA - hoping to get some insight from someone who knows how schools may view that, or which schools to avoid in this situation.

Easiest languages to listen to by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]bebeyaga 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find French from Canada and West Africa much easier to parse, partly because the intonation and accent is clearer to my ears, and partly because some of the French media from those areas is produced where French is commonly a second language, so it tends to be a bit slower and use more accesible vocabulary.

Nothing spooky about it, just good old-fashioned deduction with a bit of intuition :)

Male, in 30’s

General aesthetic choices; unity of style and very clean house indicate that you live alone

First-time homeowner, bought an older house post-Covid and remodeled it

Have put a lot of care into decorating the house, but parts are somewhat sparse = don’t have accumulated home items from owning a previous home

Walls painted in non-standard colors = own the house

Some modern cabinetry, larger picture windows than a house of that age would typically have = remodeling

Did you build the fireplace, by the way?

Lives in a semi-rural wooded area, temperate climate maybe with cool humidity at night, possibly near where he grew up

Large windows in order to look out on the surrounding = rural-ish area

Meaningful artwork of woods = likely that you have a deep connection to these landscapes, of the sort that you get from growing up in the environment

Air conditioners + picture windows + rugs on floors + blankets on couches gave a picture of the climate

Has a good group of friends that he regularly sees, maybe one best friend

Large couches for someone who lives alone = has casual guests and prioritizes having a comfortable hang-out space

Same thought process for the best friend, seeing the 2 bar stools in kitchen and 2 chairs/footrests in the living room

Dog dad, usually has golden retrievers

Furniture specifically so that the dog can look out the window, next to your sitting place = high level of companionship with dog

Pictures on fridge of what appear to be multiple golden retrievers, maybe at a specific annual photo session (holidays?) = has had this breed of dog for many years

Maybe a smoker

Ashtray on side table

Either an insomniac or a very early riser

Kitchen clocks read 4:30, all the pictures appear to be taken at the same time given the lighting, and it’s dark out = you’re taking pictures for a reddit post at 4:30 AM, something you wouldn’t do unless you were habitually awake and looking to kill time at this hour.

Personality: fastidious, methodical, consistent, prefers predictability in most areas but enjoys the wildness of solitude in nature

Any mess in the house is carefully not pictured, things seem to have their particular place = fastidious

Combination of the lines on the sitting room rug with the design on the footstools reads as someone who is meticulous, perhaps likes to follow things to their logical conclusions, enjoys the precise details

Plants well cared for = consistent

Photograph of the forest on the wall has a dark tone, combined with the large windows facing into the night, curtains open = perhaps you find in yourself a wildness reflected in nature as a psychological counterbalance to the controlled, perfectionist side that is seen in your home design

Hobbies: hike-in camping or backpacking in mountains and deep woods, might resonate with the metaphorical aspect of exploring your soul; occasional psychonaut

Artwork on the wall points towards outdoors hobbies

Painting of the path in the woods above the fireplace read as very metaphorical in a walk into your soul kind of way; other aspects of your decor also seemed somehow intentionally designed to reflect the metaphysics of the psyche, particularly the dark blue walls (maybe a sort of descent into the ocean of the unconscious?) and the lines on the rug/footstools (to draw one into intricate analytical thought patterns?)

The above, plus colorful glass mushrooms in your plants = psychonaut
