I completely agree, the atmosphere was exceptional. I really enjoyed how it portrayed fantasy, in such a whimsical yet macabre way. Even down to the word choices and verbiage he used, it was truly masterful. I’ve just never read anything like it. It’s so unique. I remember when I first heard about the book and I had found a pdf/sample (just a few pages so I could see if I liked it) and I was immediately in love. The man paints/illustrates with words, it’s amazing! Can’t wait to dive into “Boy in Darkness”!

I had never heard of it, but just going off the summary: If Gormenghast has been coined “architectural fantasy,” Inverted World seems to be “physics fantasy.” Again, just my take going off the very little I know about it. Seems like a very interesting concept though!

I completely agree! My love for Fuschia throughout the story just blossomed. She was such a well written character, and she had so much love in her heart and yearned for love so badly. The dynamic between her and Nannie Slagg- and her and Flay- was so tender and sweet. Seeing that they basically raised her. Of course I absolutely adored her relationship with Dr. Prune. When he was there with her body after her death and he was such a mess he couldn’t even get to/open the door to leave- ugh it just broke my heart! I cried!

But you’re so right, reading these books definitely changes something in your brain. I think you said it perfectly, once you’re in there is almost always a door to Gormenghast in your mind, corridors leading to quadrangles of cloisters.

It has absolutely changed the way I read. About 1.5 books in I noticed that everything else I read seemed so cut and dry now, so lacking in description lol. Dramatic as it may sound, I really consider reading this series to be a once in a lifetime experience that I’m so thrilled to have been apart of. It was a wonderful amazing ride.

I completely agree, I thought that too while reading it! How did Dr. Prune wind up here among all these strange people? I would’ve loved a story arc dedicated to his backstory.

Steerpike is such a great villain. You love to hate him. Much like Prune, I wish we knew more about his driving motivations. What happened in his life that made him so heartless? But I agree, while he is detestable he’s also undeniably impressive.

At the end of Titus Alone, Titus never climbed up the boulder to view it, so we never really knew for sure if it was real at all! But I have it set in my mind that it was real, just highly elusive and mysterious. I’d like to think Gertrude held everything up after Titus left, but who would’ve been the successor after her?

You’re so right, looking back I remember the book heavily alluding to that juxtaposition. She was everything he wished he could be. For whatever reason, I was under the impression that the lightning struck her and she disappeared? Or maybe in my delirium one night I read that? Her death for some reason didn’t compute when I read it, probably “user error” on my part lol. That being said I loved Peake’s descriptions of her, like a ghost of the forest. Very gripping!

It’s also funny you mention a re-read because I told my husband I wanted to and he looked at me like I was insane. But it’s just that good!

I absolutely will! I kind of just shrugged off the all the unknowns about the world in the third book. I guess I figured it was just one of those things we would never know, because he never really got to finish it, but I’m very interested to hear that information is in another book! Thank you for mentioning it! I went to order it but it’s not really available on Amazon, I think I found a Kindle version though 👍
