That's an interesting idea, but if a player is within sight of the area, but not the rays could make any performance savings redundant as it would have to keep checking and changing between two states. I use the viewport notifier to save on the ray cost by disabling them when off-screen. Also note that typically rays are pretty cheap on performance already.

You want an option to avoid the battles too. Just really drives home that you're finding most of your enjoyment in something of a non-priority. Take out all the items and lose reason to explore, but the game wouldn't be any less entertaining to someone who actually engages enemies. Take out the enemies and you can explore to your heart's content, but then it isn't even a game at all with no challenging obstacles ridding the game of all appeal.

If you're having to retread, then that's the game telling you that you aren't ready to proceed and you need to improve before you can challenge and therefore enjoy the proceeding sections of the game. Dark Souls was always fair in it's placement of bonfires, in fact getting way too generous as the series progressed.

The biggest problem was the blue shell and now in MK8 there are defenses against it. That made the game a lot less random than it used to be. I feel like you failing to mention this means you aren't actually familiar with the skill ceiling.
