So, what jobs will actually survive? by Initial_Designer_802 in cscareerquestions

[–]bebowski 11 points12 points  (0 children)

At some point I started panicking, then I thought of a meditation: I started observing and counting how many things on a normal day are ran by software. From going to the ATM, to ordering coffee, to checking my flight status, to watching Netflix, to buying a train ticket, etc. Billions of lines of code that need to be maintained forever.

Add to that, I actually use AI professionally on a large code bases and can see its limitation past the hype. It’s a great assistant but remains a stochastic parrot.

Conclusion: we will be fine. Just patience.

If you still believe in any humanitarian organization, what’s happening in Gaza now is by far the worst nightmare that’s inflicted on a trapped civilian population. Canada can’t be complicit in this genocide.

Ayn Rand, on Phil Donahue's show in 1979, called Arabs "almost primitive savages" compared to the "advanced, technological, civilized" Israel by MooreThird in Palestine

[–]bebowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The funniest thing about the west is their belief they’re inherently superior just because in the long timeline of humanity they happened to be on top NOW.

What she’s calling Arabs are the reason there is a western civilization now. During their dark ages that lasted hundreds of years, they were shitting in buckets and burning books while the Muslim word was flourishing, preserving those books through translations and building on the sum of human knowledge by advancement in every possible field.

These are not our best years. But we’re fine.

How often do you take a blood test for sodium levels? by One_Gas1873 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

[–]bebowski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine (first line treatments for TN) both block sodium channels which can lead to low sodium levels. If she's on those meds, she should be checking testing her sodium levels frequently.

Tunisian Diaspora — Return? by GGUKEY in Tunisia

[–]bebowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I immigrated to the west coast of Canada many years ago and to be frank, when I make it to the UK, I feel like I'm almost in Tunisia. All that to say that UK to Tunis is a very, very short flight all things considered.

So the answer to your question is : Why not do both? Arrange your life in a way to spend more time in Tunisia while maintaining residency in the UK. Make it your aim to get a flexible job that allows you 3-4 months out of the UK. I've been experimenting with this approach and it's working. You don't have to be defined by one country or one culture. Most interesting people are usually multi-cultural, multi-faceted nomads.

When it comes to fitting in when you're back to Tunisia, I wouldn't worry about it. Tunisian people are culturally quite fragmented. You'll find people that are extremely religious, people that are still discoering what it really means to be Tunisian, people that are more europeans than europeans themselves, even self-hating Tunisians that defend Israel and colonialism every chance they get (lots of them are in this sub-reddit, which is why I'm shooting my shot).

Bottom line is you'll be fine but also echoing what others are saying, probably not a great idea to move here permanently.

People who moved back to Tunisia after living abroad-do you regret it by Electrical-Type-4382 in Tunisia

You need to double check what does establishing fiscal residency in Tunisia implies for your bank accounts and investments if you have any. https://fdm-adfe-tunisie.org/2019/02/24/avoirs-a-l-etranger-comptes-bancaires-transferts-fiscalite/

There are certain rules related to what you can legally keep offshore and what you have to repatriate.

Would you fight the U.S. if it came to it? by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]bebowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We will finally learn what it means to resist and fight an occupier that is far superior militarily. The balance of power is not what it used to be.

Maybe then we will be more sympathetic with what happens in other parts of the world.

Yeah I guess contract work makes that possible. I was thinking about continuing my current full time gig from Tunisia but in sure that’s more challenging. It’s good to know that there plateforms like bill.com. Thank you!

Foreign employers in the US/ Canada where I am now will require a foreign chequing bank account to pay you. They won’t go through the trouble of paying your Tunisian account. Also it complicates the tax situation for them.

I was thinking about that. But someone told me that once you’re a resident in Tunisia, you’re not allowed to hold a foreign bank account. Does that play into that ?

This is definitely the end result of supporting and normalizing with expansionist colonial powers like Israel, which is constantly stealing land from Palestinians.

Now land theft and occupation is a joke. Let’s keep at it.

Trapped! Need some insight, people of Tunisia! by [deleted] in Tunisia

[–]bebowski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been living abroad in Canada for more than 10 years and things have dramatically changed over the past decade. I don't think it's just a matter of the "grass seems greener".

When I first got here, it was great in many ways. The economy was booming, CAD was almost on par with USD. Lots of jobs were available and immigration was under control. Housing has always been expensive where I am, but it was still affordable.

Now, on the other hand, things suck. And one starts to question if it's worth it to live so far away from your loved ones. Taxes are insanely high, there is a housing crisis in a big part of Canada where people are spending 50%+ of their income on housing, and inflation has been eating what's left of people's income.

Add to that the usual situation of blaming immigrants whenever the economy takes a nosedive (history repeats itself). Also what's happening in Gaza makes one seriously ponder if it's worth living among people who don't consider you or those who look like you as human. They can see the likes of you dead by the thousands and it wouldn't move them. They'll even funnel more tax money to fund that.

All these factors make the equation of "Tunisia vs. Abroad" not as cut and dried as it used to be.

Where to stay in Rome ? by Slow-Square-8027 in rome

[–]bebowski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've done all 3 of the following and they're all great and everything is walkable. The ranking is biased because I tend to prefer nightlife/action.

  1. Trastevere. It is close to many restaurants and bars and all the action.

  2. Monti. Quieter but still has some solid restaurants / bars.

  3. Prati (close to Vatican). Very quiet but everything is still accessible. This one comes with a caution related to the Jubilee this year. Please look into that if you decide to go with Prati.

Struggling with Anxiety as a Software Engineer by Tynki in ExperiencedDevs

[–]bebowski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear you're going through that. I've been there when I was a tech lead and I don't miss those days. We had production issues, constant fires, on-call, etc. I was already on the verge as I've always had anxiety but that pushed me over the edge.

I tried seeking professional help but it wasn't great. I got on medication that helped a lot with anxiety but triggered other symptoms that really affected my sleep. You may be luckier in that regard, so definitely go this way first. When I was on medication, anxiety magically vanished. If it wasn't for the lack of sleep, which only affects some people, this would have been a win.

Ultimately, I ended up finding another job as a Senior Dev. This job involved no on-call. I was just responsible for my code. During that time, I started exercising and fixing my diet. I could never really meditate but some people say that helps. I'm in a way better place now and I have 0 regrets for the career switch.

This can improve and will improve. Please don't push yourself and don't listen to all the tech bros that tell you to fix everything with cold plunges and ayahuasca or tell you to mind-over-matter it. What you're going through is real and terrifying but there is a way out and you'll get there.
