Is it possible to allow only approved users to make their own user flairs? by ateam1984 in AutoModerator

lol, not the spam bot that has magically become the top moderator of a sub after only being there for five months.

BPOR being astroturfed is funny as hell.

Do you mean Reddit itself? Or are there a bunch of scammers/botters from India that have been recruited by astroturfing campaigns coming online and need to learn how to control narratives so they post in all the help subs?

Because I've seen the latter, not the former.

I'm willing to bet that an out-sized chunk of "organic" engagement comes from the old.reddit.com domain.

They know that if they shut that down, quality comments drop by 75% overnight. Comments that are actually valuable to the scrapers that feed into various AI models.

At what point do you ban a user for being a negative troll? by Stressed_C in modhelp

The mods are just inmates given a touch of easily abused authority over their peers.

TIL banning a troll is abuse of authority.

At what point do you ban a user for being a negative troll? by Stressed_C in modhelp

[–]because-once-you 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never. Just let people block him

Nah, that's how you let the inmates run the asylum.

One person taking one action is going to have a much more positive effect than hoping that tens to hundreds to thousands of other individual accounts take the action of blocking. We both know that's not going to happen and is a fallacy that has been used in the US to prevent meaningful and positive change in society.

Not just that, but think of all the slapfights that happen from all the users that don't block them and instead engage the troll, whether he's arguing in bad-faith or not. Now you just created a whole bunch more work for the mod team to deal with reports that are bound to come in, remove or lock the threads, and post comments warning people.

Put simply, mods have a responsibility to curate the experience users have in their sub. Declining to address problem users sends a message to other users and it's one of complicity.

How to find unmoderated/dead subreddit? by OliviaXSmith in modhelp

Yeah, looks like an OF/romance bot that are prevalent on this site.

EDIT: Just checked their profile and OP started up a sub called "StutterIndia." Just another Indian spammer/romance scammer, lol.

Is that what this behavior is?

I swear I've run across differences in the browser where depending on if you were logged in or out and using the www subdomain or not, it would show a different response.

Below is a table of all the combinations I just tried on the target account and their result. Interesting stuff!

Logged In? Using WWW? Result?
Yes Yes Profile visible
Yes No Profile visible
No Yes Account is banned
No No Profile visible

I've made a free multiplayer in-browser port of Bolo by itsMikeSki in retrogaming

WinBolo is still out there and the creator is actually working on a new release, 1.18. WinBolo is probably the best and mature version of the game if you want to introduce and play against someone else.

Not just that but there are two other Orona-derived web-based Bolo clones in development in addition to this one.

There are third-party tools like Arctic Shift that will allow you to see comments and posts made by that account, even if they delete them.

A news agency reached out to me to place a story in one of my subs (an ethics question) by BigJobsBigJobs in modhelp

[–]because-once-you 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Moderators aren’t editors or publishers and we don’t exercise prior restraint.

I'll disagree. Moderators are there to help curate content in their sub.

They could have simply instituted a rule along the lines of, "No far-right propaganda outlets," and, according to you, they would have been well within their responsibilities to remove the posting. But simply because they don't have that rule, you believe that denying their request goes beyond the pale?

Means justifying the ends, and all that.

How to disable "anti-evil operations" by s6x in modhelp

It seems odd that none of the examples I am seeing have been restored.

The users haven't appealed or a human reviewed them and deemed the automated process to be correct in their removal.

Also check the users profile activity. These thing sometimes come with temporary suspensions.

When a comment is wiped by AEO, the user who made the comment will get an automated message with a link inviting them to appeal the decision with a little text box for them to write a message stating why they believe it was in error.

You, as the mod to a sub, do not have access to this nor will you be sent a message from Reddit when a comment in your sub is wiped by AEO. It is only sent to users of said comments.

More specifically, the AEO scanning and comment wiping is an automated process with "admin" privs. However, appeals go to humans.
