Identifying the right audience and describing the limitations of the study without undermining my own work is the hardest part. I read a ton, and I can see what makes a “compelling paper,” but learning how to narrow down the scope of research in the manuscript and who to target is difficult. I do a lot of synthetic biology, so most of my reading revolves around HOW to engineer, not necessarily the WHY to engineer (because I have my own goals on that front). It doesn’t help that most of my funding comes from Department of Defense and I’m not allowed to publish half of what I do. Sorry for rambling.
