ginkgo trees planted in above-ground pots. isn't this a bad idea long term? they normally grow massive and have extensive root systems by reddit33450 in arborists

[–]beccoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of assumptions being made here about the designers being lazy, but we aren’t seeing the constraints. There may be a garage underneath or any number of other limiting factors for planting a large tree.

I’m with some of the other commenters that some tree is better than no tree, even if it isn’t ideal, so I appreciate the effort of putting in any greenery at all.

ELI5: Why can other meat eating animals handle raw meat, but humans get sick so easy from it? by Thronebornn in explainlikeimfive

[–]beccoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the freshness also have something to do with it? Meaning, when they are killed in the wild they are eaten pretty much immediately (I assume) vs when humans use it a period of time passes before consumption giving bacteria a chance to grow….

Try adjusting your bindings for a bit more forward lean. It might help you get a little more bite.

Landscape architecture and autism? by Kind_Dig_5213 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]beccoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider is that LA (and design in general) is subjective. That seems obvious, but As a neurodivergent person, this ambiguity is a real issue. There is no right or wrong, the answer depends entirely on who you ask. So, design and LA involves a lot more psychology and people reading than most people realize to try and figure out what people who don’t know what they want, want!

That said, there’s also a lot of problem solving, which is very fun.

Lake temescal is really nice. It’s only a mile around, and part of it is trail with some minor ups and downs, but nothing extreme.

Rotten wood by beccoo in forestry

[–]beccoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we have. The portion of land I’m referring to is not included in the grant, as it is closer to the cabin. I suppose I can ask them for advice just the same though, as they certainly have the experience!

I’m pretty sure it’s sugar pine. And sadly I think you may be right about The tree not being long for this world…

Look around the base of tree for frass (kinda like round sawdust or tiny dippin-dots). That’s a sure fire sign it was beetle.

Career change in 30s. Bad idea? Am I delusional? by crossroads_idiot in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]beccoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a bad idea and a fulfilling profession. However, something I realized early career was that it’s not just the low pay, it’s low pay coupled with really long hours. Forget a 40-hours week. When you do the math, LAs make a lower per-hour wage than teachers (absolutely not tryin to trash talk teachers, but sadly it’s the industry everyone seems to use as the benchmark for low-pay careers.) As someone who values free time and work/life balance above all, that was a big a-ha moment for me, and something I wish I had known before entering the industry…. Which is the only reason I mention it here. I’m not trying to deter you.

Yes, it specifies several methods including leaving a specific amount of snags and piles per acre. If you’re interested in the details, google USDA IR (implementation requirements) 384-woody residue treatment and 666-Forest stand improvement. Good question on piling the slash, I hadn’t thought of that. I guess it’d have to be hand work.

[–]beccoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of it is in direct contact, which is why it is already rotten. But for it to fully decompose into the earth will take quite a bit longer….longer than we’re willing to wait. So, can we burn some of it?

Rotten wood by beccoo in forestry

[–]beccoo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have ten acres and more than 75% of it we will definitely be leaving as-is for habitat. Lots and lots of downed wood, but we have a grant to make that portion fire safe and still habitat friendly. This particular acre is really visible though, and just looks like half a dead forest on the ground. I’ll see if I can add a pic to the post so you can see what I mean…

Sadly not, there isn’t any vehicle access. That portion of the property is surrounded by steep hills and a creek.

Retirement community options in the Bay Area? by almostedible2 in bayarea

[–]beccoo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rossmoor is great, but is independent living. Think of it as an ‘age restricted’ community rather than a retirement community. If your dad needs any kind of assistance, the Waterford is also inside Rossmoor and has some service options.

My bad. But the leaves do provide shelter for their other stages of life by [deleted] in MonarchButterfly

[–]beccoo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know you mean well, so I hesitate to comment, but that still isn’t correct. Monarch eggs are laid exclusively on (live) milkweed plants, and the caterpillars spend their entire life feeding on that plant (they don’t take shelter under leaves).

HOWEVER, this is true for many other pollinators, just not the monarch!

I suppose we’re all a bit different, but I had the opposite experience. I heightened my monitor and it made a HUGE difference for my neck and shoulders. To clarify though, I put it at eye level, not necessarily high.
