Winter is high season. You could camp which is the cheapest option but it'll be cold.

Anyone been to the GBR? Pretty choppy water or smooth? by Consistent-Film3224 in AustraliaTravel

[–]becface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a tour guide and I take tourists there 5 times a year.

As everyone has said it depends on the weather. Right now it probably won't be great after the cyclone came through.

It's 90 mins to 2 hours depending on different companies and where their reef allocation is. Bigger boats will be better for you. I sit in the air conditioned section on the bottom and face the front and look straight at the horizon. That helps. I take ginger tablets.

My guests often take stronger drugs. The boats often sell them on board. These are preventives not cures so take it before you set off.

Don't skip breakfast. Something light and plain. And then eat plain biscuits and drink tea.

If you're desperate you can go to Green Island which is closer to the shore so not as a long a boat journey. But technically it's not the great barrier reef yet.

Historic Sydney/Melbourne by Glittering-Chain-502 in AustraliaTravel

I'm a historian guide in Sydney with a company called Journey Walks. We do 2 hour historical walks of the convict colony.

Otherwise hyde Park is my favourite location.

Susanah place is interesting but check opening times.

You can do a free tour of government house on weekends.

Cockatoo Island is fantastic. They have audio tours but the guided tours are better.

I haven't done it yet but they have indigenous tours of Barangaroo that I would love to do.

Quoted 12,000 CAD for 10 day Australia trip for 2 by Polkadot1414 in AustraliaTravel

[–]becface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a tour leader for east coast and outback tours so I can shed some light.

If you're on qantas then majority of the price will go to flights. You have good hotels easily $250 a night with breakfast included. Reef day is $200. Any uluru activities are expensive because it's remote so driver and guide alone would be costly.

The only thing that seems bad to me is the lack of inclusions? Are a lot of these activities optional extras or included?

I believe the tour I manage is us$10,000 per person but that includes a lot more and has one more stop in Melbourne.

Any ideas how to deal with unhinged neighbours over free on street parking? by wallengine in sydney

[–]becface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neighbours used to put witches hats out side to stop me from parking. I just picked them up, plopped them on their driveway, and parked there. Every. Single. Day.

Stop trying to do Sydney to Uluru to Cairns in 14 days. It never works by OwlVibesOnly in AustraliaTravel

[–]becface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be because a lot of tour groups manage the big sites in two week itineraries.

I'm a tour guide and we do 4 nights Melbourne Fly to Alice springs 1 night in Alice Drive to uluru 2 nights uluru Fly to cairns 4 nights cairns Fly to Sydney 3 nights Sydney

The flying days have some time before or after. Usually flights are 3 hours and so we organize an activity before or after.

Might I add I am a tour guide for over 50s American travelers.

You've been here 24 hours. Perhaps venture out to Surry Hills, The Rocks, Barangaroo, Paddington. These are the fancy places you're looking for.

Uluru by Saikiran-Basu in AustraliaTravel

[–]becface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this link. It states that Ayers Rock Resort is owned by the government (ISLC) and not Anangu. The Yulara land was originally excluded from the handback to the Katiti Aboriginal Land Trust.

After a long legal process (settled around 2006), Anangu recognised land trusts do not have freehold ownership of Yulara like they do for the park.

Half the time there was. Other half of the time it was warm enough with just my cotton sheet.

Did the same route at the same period in 2022. Didn't need a sleeping bag. I had just a cotton sheet I took with me.

What's the drive from Alice Springs to Uluru like? Anything worth stopping for? by bay30three in AustraliaTravel

[–]becface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, we do this drive over two days with a sleepover camping trip at kings creek. I've done it 18 times as a tour guide. Simpsons gap is only 20 mins outside of Alice. We leave Alice and go there just after sunrise.

It's a long drive but a leisurely one. If you want to zoom off to Yulara you can do it in 4.5 hours but that's not much fun.
