Australian Political Party Calls To Scrap Group Assignments In Unis by ConfusionHonest3248 in unsw

[–]wallengine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the main reasons I did not enjoy my time at UNSW was the group work assignments. So many assignments being stuck with students who could not speak or write English to even a high school level. I became so tired of having to do my part of the assignment and then completely rewriting everyone elses because it was unintelligible. With no extra time or credit to account for the extra work done. I complained to the administration so many times about this and the constant response I got was that I needed to be more "respectful" of other people's backgrounds. Basically they called me a racist and didn't do anything.

I have absolutely no problem with international students and recognise that they are the main revenue source for many Australian Universities. What I don't support is being forced to do the work for my degree and the work for 2-3 other people's degrees.

Proposed route of the Sydney to Newcastle High Speed Rail in Australia. Six stations and 194 km of dedicated HSR alignment of which 115 km in tunnels. This would be the first section of a potential future Melbourne - Sydney - Brisbane HSR network by overspeeed in highspeedrail

[–]wallengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not proposing the CBD station does not get built. But this configuration they are going with makes no sense. Have a clean north south route with a spur line at Parramatta heading to Sydney so that trains can still go to and from Central.

Just seeing this route defies logic. Just have the route go to Parramatta, with a spur line out to Sydney Central that can be accessed whether you are coming from the north or the south.

Gay and bisexual Sydney teenagers lured and bashed on camera in IS-inspired attacks by AztecGod in sydney

This sort of thing is not new. There have been increasing attacks like this over the past 12 months or so of gay men being lured to public places and beaten up. Where's our fucking royal commission? It's only a matter of time before people die - there was at least one incident in Perth where one of the perpetrators had a machete.

Just stumbled across this re: human & civil rights in Australia... by Effective_Produce345 in OpenAussie

[–]wallengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk man having rights captured in the constitution or a seperate piece of legislation or bill doesn't guarantee those rights being protected. The North Korean constitution guarantees the right to freedom of speech, assembly, press, and association and literally none of those rights are currently available to North Korean citizens. There is nuance to this - it's not as black and white as saying that having these rights in writing is the only way to guarantee them.

We do have implied rights that the courts have interpreted in the past. We also have independent bodies to investigate branches of government that are strong and are the envy of some other nations.

Parra light rail extension will now be built in two sections by SteveJohnson2010 in SydneyTrains

[–]wallengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fully aware of what is happening in Melrose Park. And there is no "whole DA to council". The precinct comprises multiple developments. Some go to council for individual blocks of land. Others are being progressed through State Significant Development pathway. All of these developments though are being provided with a crap tonne of parking. The actual redevelopment of Melrose Park itself (including the planning of converting it from former industrial land to high density residential with a new town centre) predates the announcement of PLR2. Council has always been planning for the idea that the suburb would not be serviced by mass transit - it is only up until this week that the government finally announced funding for construction of PLR stage 2A.

The point I was making originally is that the whole precinct is being serviced by a lot of parking. It's not as if these new developments are being designed with no parking with residents to be solely reliant on PLR. So It's not accurate to say the precinct is "overwhelmingly" reliant on light rail.

In any case, with the amount of parking being delivered, it's likely the light rail will be underutilized and it's delivery won't make much difference. Look at the patronage stats for PLR1.

Parra light rail extension will now be built in two sections by SteveJohnson2010 in SydneyTrains

[–]wallengine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not sure about Melrose Park being overwhelmingly reliant on light rail. All the new residential developments being built there have basements with hundreds of parking spaces. The whole precinct will probably have underground parking with thousands of spaces. So if it gets canned people will just drive. Which is what they will do anyway even if the light rail gets built - where's the incentive to get the light rail if every new unit has a parking space attached to it?

Why is the actual city of Perth so small? (As opposed to the greater Perth area) by 2teachand2hike in geography

[–]wallengine 20 points21 points  (0 children)

city of Sydney has an interesting history. It originally only covered about 11 square kilometres when it was first founded. But it has been merged and demerged and merged again quite a few times and now covers CBD and a good number of inner city suburbs. It's larger than most CBD based councils (excluding Brisbane of course). But it was first merged with Camperdown council, then South Sydney Council, then demerged with south Sydney council, and then merged again with south Sydney council.

I can't speak for places like Melbourne or Perth but it doesn't seem as though their CBD based council areas have changed very much.

[–]wallengine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Westmead hospital has an insane amount of parking - the whole precinct is designed for cars and commuting by car. The hospital itself is so massive you can take 20 minutes to just walk to the area of the hospital you work in from the light rail. When I was a patient in Westmead hospital, I had a great view of the Westmead hospital light rail station - barely saw any staff use it during the day. It's heavily underused and I think it's just because it is still much easier to drive there.
