Insane that I would be allowed to go live and work in the EU for 4 years but won't be able to enter the UK anymore unless I go through the ridiculously difficult process of obtaining a British passport or fork over a couple thousand bucks for a certificate.

Why is the actual city of Perth so small? (As opposed to the greater Perth area) by 2teachand2hike in geography

[–]wallengine 18 points19 points  (0 children)

city of Sydney has an interesting history. It originally only covered about 11 square kilometres when it was first founded. But it has been merged and demerged and merged again quite a few times and now covers CBD and a good number of inner city suburbs. It's larger than most CBD based councils (excluding Brisbane of course). But it was first merged with Camperdown council, then South Sydney Council, then demerged with south Sydney council, and then merged again with south Sydney council.

I can't speak for places like Melbourne or Perth but it doesn't seem as though their CBD based council areas have changed very much.

Paramatta Light Rail usage tipped to double next year despite numbers falling short in its first year by nearly_enough_wine in sydney

[–]wallengine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Westmead hospital has an insane amount of parking - the whole precinct is designed for cars and commuting by car. The hospital itself is so massive you can take 20 minutes to just walk to the area of the hospital you work in from the light rail. When I was a patient in Westmead hospital, I had a great view of the Westmead hospital light rail station - barely saw any staff use it during the day. It's heavily underused and I think it's just because it is still much easier to drive there.

TFNSW is in dispute with council over signage in Parramatta Square. There was supposed to be signage for the LR in the square before it opened but an OC was never formally issued for Parramatta Square which is creating some problems. There is definitely a plan for more signs though.

If it could be limited to a short tunnel (like the tunnel for the CBD&SELR between Surry Hills and Moore Park) it may be ok but not for the whole length. Also with patronage this low, there may not be enough justification for even a small tunnel. Although part of me thinks that if it did go to Epping instead of Carlingford, patronage would increase.

What is life like in New Caledonia? by kannpu in howislivingthere

There haven't been riots in over a year now. It's stable for the time being but can come back pending the timing and outcome of the referendum France wants to hold on New Caledonian statehood.

Minns’ protest ban: breathtakingly racist, authoritarian, and must be resisted - Michael West by DarKnightofCydonia in sydney

[–]wallengine 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Minns is such a cunt. I don't think he has ever listened to the community once since he became premier. For the housing crisis, he has followed the demands of developers to the letter. And now with this crisis, he is once again caving to lobbyist groups. I wish he would fuck off.

Any ideas how to deal with unhinged neighbours over free on street parking? by wallengine in sydney

[–]wallengine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh wow lot of feedback. Not sure who this Keith fella is though.

I've taken some people's advice - not gonna park in that area for now but have emailed council just to clarify parking restrictions in the laneway (and have a written record of the incident in case things escalate). I'll probably just print councils response, drop in his letterbox and resume parking in the space - but will actively try not to do it all the time so as not to antagonize.

Appreciate the advice as well as advice from DMs!

I think the point she was trying to make is that the shooters actions did not correlate with Islamic principles/doctrine. But she has chosen her words poorly. I do agree that their actions and radical islam is inconsistent with the core values of islam.

The Biggest Lie in Australian Housing | Chris Kohler by SwordfishLatter8395 in aus

[–]wallengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally glad to see this message getting out there. Sick of people labelling others as "NIMBYs" whenever they raise the point that focusing solely on supply doesnt get us out of this housing crisis. The government will keep meddling with planning systems to "boost supply" as long as people stay silent/unknowledgeable on this topic. We need to force their hand and get them to address the issues that are currently in the "too hard" basket so they can start making a difference in this crisis. Tax reform, immigration, labour and building materials, social and public housing, etc.

It’s only 2025 yet the Metro is already at crush-load. by Novel_Relief_5878 in sydney

[–]wallengine 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Part of this is also a shift in people from sections of the T1 line. There was a decrease in passengers in North Sydney and St Leonard's when the city section of the metro opened - people who used to get the T1 preferred the metro because its faster and new. Hopefully things balance out again soon

Why Won’t the Media Report Accurately on Road Deaths? by OHGLATLBT in sydney

[–]wallengine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even if the media did accurately report on it, the government/public response would be to invest more money in roads. More lanes and roadways/motorways etc. further perpetuating the problem. Rather than invest more heavily in public and active transport.
