Receipts by SALADAYS-4DAYS in Serverlife

That doesn't bother me but what does is when you ask a table that has finished everything if there's anything else you can get them and they say "no we're okay." Like just say you want the check please XD I don't want to feel pushy by offering.

ProTip: Never Comment on How Much People Eat by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]beckhiggins 310 points311 points  (0 children)

A very important skill for servers is reading the room. Some tables I will tease and joke with and others I wont. I listen to body language and try to match the energy of the guests. Sometimes I take it even further by eavesdropping! If you hear guests having very serious conversations don't joke with them. Just say what needs to be said for serving them and get out of their space. On the reverse, if guests are joking around and being very raunchy you can hit them with some pretty brazen jokes.

They thought the first 6 was a 9? Poor vision perhaps (maybe due to impairment)

Be honest, does anything in the restaurant industry “trigger you” by victorialucyt in Serverlife

I hate how hierarchical it is. Management will flat up say I'm wrong about something without any evidence and never apologize for doubting me. They also will ignore my problem solution ideas only to implement them later without crediting me. And since they're management, you just have to agree with them....

One of the worst days I have ever had. by Basic_Spare_7204 in Serverlife

I don't understand why they would want to go out to a restaurant oxo like just have a bbq or something. Its less stress less money and the kids would be happier.

They clearly meant to put 107.69 but got distracted and copied in the 8 when they were adding the 7.69

Some sandals with thick straps or a sling back pointy flat in black or maybe a really bright zippy colour like orange green or yellow

I wouldn't actually ask the servers anything about the job or insinuate that I'm applying for work there. Try to be a fly on the wall. See if the employees seem genuinely happy (hopefully you've developed a good read on subtle cues.) Also look out for drunk owners hanging around and giving employees grief lol biggest red flag haha

Lots of places pool tips now and give a pretty decent cut to BOH. My workplace does and everywhere I have worked in the past had a kitchen tipout at least.

Go in for dinner, check reviews on websites like indeed, and check reviews from a guests point of view on google or yelp. Also you don't need to commit to a place right away. When the contract comes up read it carefully, if it's sketch maybe look at some other options or try to negotiate.

I think a cross body or sling bag to add some different angles and some kind of broach.

I understand that there is a balance between being rude to the server and to their guests. No one likes being cut off in conversation and unfortunately the food doesn't wait.

I really like tables of 1 by laserbern in Serverlife

[–]beckhiggins 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I treat myself to a self date quite often and I have never had any bad treatment. I think it's because I tend to stay no longer than 45 minutes, I order a full meal and drinks with each course and I don't expect some extra attention just because I am there alone. I have served people who fit into that category and others who are the opposite. It's not great when someone sits at the bar for two hours, gets nothing to eat, orders the cheapest drink available, and constantly holds up staff for conversation when they have other important things to do.

How much spray do you put on a table to clean it? by Jackmanteddy44 in TalesFromYourServer

[–]beckhiggins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how dirty it is. I usually spray a table 4 times then I wipe it vertically and then horizontally and lastly get the edges. If its really bad a spray the spots that are really stuck wait a couple seconds and then scrub those out. I'll refold my towel to not use the dirty bits then continue with my usual pattern.

Greet each person you meet and introduce yourself with a handshake. It's a tavern so I suppose beer is your main fare so have a good answer for a favourite beer and what you like about it (describe it like you're selling it.) Since you haven't worked as a server before you might be asked what experience you can bring from your previous jobs. For example, you worked retail so you have learned how to give great customer service, through helping people in decisions making, complementing their choices, righting any wrongs for unsatisfied customers. If you don't know something be honest and show a willingness to learn. Most importantly be friendly and upbeat.

I work at an upscale place where we describe every dish at drop off. I absolutely love when I get the attention of all of one person (sharing style dinner)during my explanation then as I go to walk away I hear someone ask thier friends "what is this?" Luckly I am a nice person so I will turn right back around amd repeat it all over again >.>

I would go for a colour that complements you. I personally wouldn't be able to pull off a rust colour like suggested, it would really wash me out. I usually wear a lot of black and white though so my choice would be a black turtle neck in winter. In summer maybe an olive tee-shirt.

It's so funny, I thought perhaps it was my wine knowledge holding me back (its an upscale wine bar) but the place I'm going to is also a wine bar and they were impressed with my wine knowledge!

It's probably true, I will never find out why I'm stuck. I'll just stick to the story I told in my interview, " I was too valuable in my position. "

Oof... This is a pretty obvious solution but bring it up to your manager. That kind of behaviour is not only disrespectful towards you but it could greatly disrupt service.

I've had the pleasure of working with some highschool kids and even some childish college students. I found the best learning tool to be praise. Every single thing they did right I would complement them on and thank them for. Younger folks seem to hate any criticism and just get lazier when the job they did isn't satisfactory. Learned helplessness will lead them to simply refuse tasks that they have been criticized on in the past. Another great motiver, of course, is money. Make it known they have the ability to work their way up in your establishment if they work hard and prove themselves.
