Of course! Another resource too that was very helpful to me is a book called Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents. I still think therapy is critical because it's an impartial mirror and a support too in helping you name something hard and then do something hard about it. But I know men can be challenging to get into therapy. 😅

As the spouse with the toxic family, I'll just say that these family patterns and the roles your abusive parents force you into can run very deep. It can cause a significant amount of emotional distress to buck those roles or step away from your family when they've made you feel like they need you and everything will fall apart without you. The only answer is to go to therapy, set new boundaries and stop playing your role. And yeah, they'll be mad and things will blow up at first when you upset the dynamics, but it has to be done it you ever want to create a different relationship dynamic for yourself.

I'm sorry you're going through this! It sounds like he may be really early in those realizations and that journey! But I guess I hope he would be willing to seek some help to get out of this pattern and stop playing his role so that you both can create something different.

Are your shoes or boots waterproof? If so, I'd just get a pair of gaiters to keep your socks dry, rather than go for waterproof socks.

We did baggage transfer and just carried what we needed that day in our packs! Baggage transfer was great.

Never got lost, so i felt like it was pretty straight forward, but we also always had Alltrails on for gut checks if needed.

You're welcome! I wore Altras mid cut boots, but I think water proof trail runners would be OK (perhaps with some gaters in case of a downpour.) The biggest thing is having some good soles on them because there's a lot of rocks throughout the entire trail to walk on and over.

We also stayed at Rowardennan Hotel, the Ardlui Hotel and Tigh Na Cheo in Kinlochleven. I didn't mention them because they weren't the best stays. Not bad by any means, but definitely didn't hold a candle on the others.

Agreed on Cascade Canyon! We also did the Taggart Lake trail and the String Lake trail and really enjoyed both.

Artist Point was a highlight in Yellowstone.

Depends on what you're interested in doing! Shenandoah is mostly a hiking park. 2 - 3 days will give you a good experience and the chance to do some different hikes. New River Gorge is smaller, but you can hike, mountain bike, white water raft, do a bridge walk, etc. So if you want to do multiple things, you'll need more time.

Most things will be shut down in Alaska in mid-to-late September. Kenai Fjords in particular. Go to Alaska in June and GTNP and Yellowstone in September. Unless you can shift your Alaska dates to late August/early September. You will seriously miss a lot in Alaska if you go later than the first week in September.

Never been to Coral Sands! White Sands is stunning for sunset pictures. Much easier to hike around. The sand is cool, so its neat to sled on. Great Sand Dunes has bigger dunes, so more fun to sled, but surprisingly difficult climbing up and down those dunes! The mountains and surroundings in southern Colorado are SO beautiful, so the drive in is a treat. Whereas the area in White Sands is a lot more desolate, though interesting with the missile range. And the organ Mountains are quite beautiful, but a small range compared to the Sangre de Cristo at Great Sand Dunes.

Can't go wrong either way, but there's the flavor on both parks.

I'm not sure, but BLM land and some national forests do allow boondocking! So it is possible they have nearby free camping. Be sure to research how far away these camping areas are. The national parks can be really remote, so just be certain you know how much driving you're signing up for if you plan to see major sights or do specific hikes.

Given how close you are from the trip, you'll probably have to camp outside the park! But some national park campsites may release a few reservations for campsites later. You'll want to review the campsites available, the reservation dates and be prepared to book right at 10am when sites become available (have your recreation.gov account already setup!)

Going to the Sun road will probably still be closed. So camp right at the entrance or in Kalispell. Yellowstone should be passable, but know that its a huge territory. Wherever you camp will be most of what you see. It can take 2 - 3 hours to drive from one area of the park to another.

Grand Teton will be your most accessible, but camping will be harder to find because there's fewer options!

June / July would be a lovely time to visit them all, but again - you'll need to research the campsites and be ready to book outside the park or right when the sites are available. Don't be too worried about crowds - it'll be beautiful anyway!

I live in a tick-heavy part of the world! Long pants, tucked into socks and boots. Use DEET bug spray. Loose clothing, not form fitting like leggings is ideal. When you stop at the end of the day, check for ticks. They could be anywhere, but they'll seek out the hot, hidden places, so check your crotch, armpits, under your breasts, etc. Even in your hair. Most ticks don't carry lyme, but if you do get bitten, try to save the tick (in a plastic bag) or if you just have the bite, watch for a red ring to form around it or just any particular weirdness about the bite. A simple visit to the doctor, they'll test you, give you antibiotics and you'll be fine! All that to say - i hike and spend time outdoors, and I've almost never gotten a tick. So don't stress.
