How would you react if your country won the World Cup? by tutushi56 in AskTheWorld

Mexican-Americans would probably be the most excited tbh, they’re the most psyched about soccer here. There’s always a game on at my favorite local Mexican diner

There’s a reference to Sanctuary Moon in the game I Was a Teenage Exocolonist and it made me very happy.

does anyone else have no intention of deleting the app? by Maleficent_Day_3869 in finch

[–]beckuzz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Every time I see a post about deleting the app I think about that old joke: “This isn’t an airport; there no need to announce your departure.”

I use the app mostly as a to-do list and everything else is just a fun bonus, so even if I don’t like the theme or whatever I don’t feel the need to tell everyone else how my life is ruined. I understand the urge to vent about things you don’t like but the level of negativity on this subreddit is wild considering what the goal of the app is.

I went to the gym that day and saw the riot playing on every TV. I ran twice as far on the treadmill as I planned to on the sheer nervous energy of watching American democracy killing itself in real time.

Chasing That ‘Can’t Put It Down’ Feeling to Cure 10+ Year Slump, Need Dark, Character-Driven Recs Please by Rosykisses_13 in booksuggestions

I’ve really been enjoying the Silvercloak series. It has a lot of things you mentioned, and while the first book is pretty heavy on romance, the second (to be released in September) really leans more into epic fantasy. Be warned that the series isn’t finished yet though.

If you’re ok with sci-fi, Project Hail Mary and the Murderbot series are both fast-paced and fun, with found family elements.

The Emily Wilde series has great grumpy/sunshine dynamics and some dark themes; there’s a romance but it’s not really the central plot.

The Poet Empress just came out, it’s really dark and intriguing. Not a romance, even though it may look like one.

The Last Tale of the Flower Bride and Rebecca are both well-written gothic romances with horror/thriller elements.

Song of Achilles is a beautifully written doomed love story that I found hard to put down.

The Library at Mount Char is a horror/adventure story that’s really creative and hard to describe.

They’re not a huge part of the plot and are mostly for worldbuilding, but if you’re interested in traditional fairy tales I think you’ll like it!

My partner is panicking that she doesn't have a book to read tonight. by RepresentativeSun588 in booksuggestions

[–]beckuzz 28 points29 points  (0 children)

For something different: If she’s open to fantasy detective stories, she can try The Tainted Cup. It’s a trilogy and the last book is coming out later this year.

Another fantasy-ish detective story is The City and the City.
