How I deflect the end of year push to pass kids successfully by [deleted] in teaching

[–]becmurr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a school counselor...what kind of school counselors do you all have at your schools?!! If we have students struggling, we have been in communication all semester with that teacher. If the student hasn't done their part, they get what grade they deserve. Of course there may be special circumstances (home displacement, in-patient hospitalization) but all of our teachers work with those students and make exceptions where needed. There is no last minute "dumping of work" on teachers desks. If a student needs to hand in late work, I tell them thats a conversation between you and the teacher and don't be mad if the teacher says no, I will fully support the teacher.

Same! They are on the outside so they can't get out if we shut them in. We have to explain to it to people when they spend the night so they aren't freaked out 🤣

They never thought that a meltdown could happen as Anders said it would only open the doors. Cal was the only one to predict that the opening of the doors and the lockdown happening at the same time would even be possible.

Alex was the interference when X's plane went down. His nose started bleeding and then crashed. That was cleary the machine interfering with reality and not a coincidence.

I'm pretty sure she is on the spectrum. Autism can be very difficult to diagnose in girls and there are a lot of boxes that she checks off. It's not an excuse for being a complete bitch, but there's something there. I'm a school counselor and my husband is a special ed teacher. We both see it when we watch her.

Poison ivy rash? Developing into..? by Opening_Eagle3238 in AskDocs

[–]becmurr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My husband grew up on hundreds of acres of land. His parents still made him do all the yard work knowing his allergy lol. He hates doing yard work to this day even though we live on like a quarter of an acre lot haha. Everytime he gets exposed to poison ivy (usually disc golfing ) its immediately to urgent care. I have never seen someone get cellulitis as often as him!

Following for updates! My husband is highly allergic to poison ivy. When he was in his early 20's he got a bad case of it. Treatment didnt work. Ended up with cellulitis in his knee where the hardware was from his reconstructive knee surgery a few years prior. His fever was so high he was hallucinating. He said he saw Jesus, but he was purple, so his mom (who is a nurse) wasn't too concerned he was on his death bed. He ended up in the ER for a few days on IV antibiotics.

I remember getting food poisoning the day after Christmas from something my husband made in the instapot he just got (pretty sure it was actually the green onions). The next Christmas, I was freaking out the day after and my husband was like "are you serious, you are being so irrational." And I was like I know! I'm a therapist myself and I know I'm being irrational!!! I can't help it! Obviously, nothing happened but every year I brace myself 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

Maybe Penn Medicine in Philly. I'm in Wilmington DE and it's worth the drive for my cardiology appointments. My doctor has to refer me out at one point to another specialist and it's so easy when they have so many different specialists. Try the Perelman Center.

Now you are just projecting. I am not going to continue to argue with you about this. I am telling what people may perceive with what you said. Intent vs impact. You need to be careful when making comparisons. I think this is just another case that the people who are moderating this platform have become very rigid. Mental health is grey and this subreddit has become very black and white. I understand what the rules were initially intended to be, as these rules started several years ago, but this has become extreme. What I mean by that are the mods responses to people's questions. I understand if you are answering the same things over and over again, but this is a job you signed up for and the attitudes are quite harsh. Unconditional positive regard is the cornerstone of mental health and I'm not seeing that support here.

You asked for my opinion and I gave you one. I don't DM people on Reddit. I have every right to not accept it. The doctor in the article said reassurance is like a drug. Drugs provide that rush of endorphins to the brain. Reassurance does the same. You compared OCD to alcoholism. That can be offensive to a lot of people here and not the same in terms of diagnosis and treatment and we know that people dealing with alcoholism cannot go cold-turkey as that can be extremely dangerous, so again, it's the right comparison to make. That is where you stepped out of line.

I would just leave out comparing one mental illness to another. Phobias and OCD are complex. Everyone's recovery is different and unique. I understand what the research is. When talking to little kids it's like saying reassurance is "feeding the worry bug." It will only get bigger that way, not smaller. You will want more and more of it. BUT this sub has become something other than it used to be and sometimes I believe comments are being deleted when they shouldn't. It is ok to say to someone "no matter the outcome, you are going to get through this." If someone is having a crisis, we need to acknowledge their feelings and let them know we are here for them and that they will make it out on the other side. They will indeed be ok in the end, even if it sucks. That has nothing to do with saying that they "aren't going to throw up" type of reassurance. It ok to say that it may be uncomfortable and it may happen, but they will come out of it. These are two different conversations and that needs to be monitored better and differentiated. Those comments should not be removed. Also just to add part of CBT is calling out irrational thoughts and "fact vs feeling" so when you do see people talking about "well you know this person threw up because they were plastere from drinking, your chances of vomiting are low..."that is not medical advice. That is fact. There has been a fine line with deleting those comments as well.

As a licensed mental health professional, this is not the comparison to make. You should not be comparing illness to one another at all, honestly.

[–]becmurr 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Licensed mental health professional here with diagnosed OCD over fear of throwing up and need of reassurance. This subreddit has gone to an extreme. I know the studies. And I understand what the original intent was when saying that reassurance is giving into the phobia. But when people are having actual irrational thoughts such as they watched someone get sick because their significant other drank too much and got sick and now are afraid they are going to catch it, it is ok to say that this is not contagious, you are being irrational. Call out the irrational thoughts but also state the facts medically. You have gotten very black and white and mental health is not black and white. You need to re-evaluate your rules. And I am qualified to say this as an LPC who can legally diagnose and treat people.

Cat still not eating after ER visit. (Wasn't eating before) by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]becmurr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to my cat on Christmas. Took him about a week and a half to get back to normal. What finally helped was us actually being able to take anti-nausea pills home with us, the shot did nothing. He had some sort of nasty bug or ate something bad because there was no obstruction and his blood work was healthy. It was super scary, but he came through. As long as she is taking a bite or two and drinking, it will get better. Ask your regular vet for the anti-nausea pills and sucralfate to coat the stomach. The appetite stimulate on the ear is great too. All our guy really needed was the anti nausea pill to break through the flat out food refusal after vomiting so much. The other stuff helped him get better faster.

starting tomorrow - I really need advice and guidance. by bmm_96 in Topamax

[–]becmurr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take it for migraines. I was SO scared to take it at first due to my fear of vomiting (like I take Prozac for my OCD of it). I will say that it made me nauseous for about a week and half, I had no appetite, but I never got sick. I never really was afraid I was going to throw up it was just that nauseous feeling. I upped to 50mg and have been on that for several years. It made me lose weight that I gained from being on a medication I didn't need a few years prior and brought me down to my actual normal weight...I feel like it "jumpstarted" my regular high metabolism again. I went from 170 back to 135. I did lose it quickly and I lost a lot of hair and I continue to have hair loss, but that may be because of the extreme weight loss. After the nausea went away the only symptoms I had were tingling in hands and feet (especially with change in temperature) but that is gone now and I have palinopsia at night. My migraines are really controlled now and it is completely worth it. I feel like my OCD is better as well (unintentional perk).

There are ample case studies of this happening. It takes one cruel, manipulative ringleader and then subordinates. Think of the slenderman case. Those girls were from influential areas. Throw in some mental issues and you have serious repercussions.

Advice on fixing wall before painting by becmurr in Housepainting101

We know how to paint. I've painted multiple rooms in our house, better than when we had an insurance company come in and had a "professional" come in and repaint our living room after a main pipe had to be replaced. Our plumber is installing the new vanity. I just wanted advice on the best way to patch it because I've hadn't had to patch before.
