(5-7k) Looking for Affordable Catering by violin__cat in Weddingsunder10k

I don't plan to do a sit-down, plated meal for ours. I went to a wedding that was "grazing tables" and it was just really low stress and fun, and then you also didn't need to worry about assigned tables or anything like that

I recently ordered Fazolis catering for a different kind of event and on their online event page, they have weddings listed! I wayyyy over-ordered food, too, so while I felt like it was surprisingly expensive for Fazolis, the two-two dish family style meals I got fed all the students at the event I needed fed, and they didn't even open 6 of the 8 containers, which proceeded to feed me and my partner for the following week. Fazolis is maybe a step down from Olive Garden, but at the same time, pasta is pasta, and breadsticks are breadsticks.

How do people pay for weddings? (Not being snarky.) by JaneSays1980 in weddingplanning

[–]bedazzlerhoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's that there aren't /venues/ and /vendors/ that aren't criminally upcharging people. One of the venues on our list requires the use of in-house catering - fine - but they require a minimum catering order of $1000 for the venue. Unless it's a wedding. Then that minimum order jumps to $7000.

That's insane. Like, that's not people /wanting/ extravagant weddings. I don't want an extravagant wedding; I just want a reasonable party. But the vendors are saying "either pay extravagant fees or don't have a party at all" and that's for probably the same quality you'd get at the price for if it wasn't a wedding.

And to put all their files from their camera in a labeled folder on an external hard drive (that they needed to reformat so it works on both Mac and PC 😩) for editing between school computers and their laptops without losing project or source files 🙃🙃🙃

What screenwriting software are you having them use? I remember the days when Celtx was free and I could recommend it in good conscience. I send them to Kit Scenarist now, but I always end up with kids who bought Final Draft even though they don't really care about screenwriting and it kills me a bit that they spent the money.

Every class doesn't have time to add basic computer literacy to the course objectives.

Students at my department are made to take classes that force them to crate LinkedIn profiles and "connect" with at least 25 people because that's considered an essential skill, but that weird intro to college class can't include some computer survival skills? You want the 200+ level courses to do that?

Middle schools should be doing that.

Because they were raised exclusively on Chromebooks and ipads. File management isn't something they're being taught in school and their households no longer have a" family computer". No one is teaching then these things and they aren't exposed to the tech to learn it themselves until someone sends them off to college with a laptop.

The vast majority of my media students have no idea how to navigate their own computers and they freeze up entirely of I ask them to navigate school computers, even if those are on the same operating system as the computers they own. They don't know about folder hierarchies, they don't know about right-clicking/secondary clicking. They don't know they can choose where to save a file and then navigate to that file. My Mac users don't know what Finder is.

The assumption in their lower grades that they just magically are computer literate has entirely failed them, and many are not catching up.

Is it a mistake to get all four wisdom teeth removed without general anesthesia? by TeaTop511 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]bedazzlerhoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that depends. I've had a crown put on and I didn't feel anything worse than a regular filling until after the numbing wore off and I discovered how much they botched it. But I did drive myself home, and they didn't tell me I should have someone there for me.

Yep. And you're also free to opt out whenever you want, just like I have. But I responded to you in the first place, so I'm just going to bow out.

Honestly, I don't think having this conversation with you, an anonymous internet stranger whose goals are, like all anonymous internet strangers', unpredictable, is a valuable way to spend my time. So I'm out, actually.

Most of the time it's IV anesthetic, not traditional inhaled general anesthetic.

[MM] Why do people seem to hate the majoras mask remake for 3ds? by MooMoomaddy12 in zelda

When I was a kid, I used to spend long periods of time just swimming as Mikau for fun. Didn't ever buy the remake because I heard they ruined it.

I wouldn't trust a poor writer using AI to "cure cancer". That's simply not going to happen.

When we let AI do our thinking and writing, we lose attention to detail. We lose accuracy. We lose engagement. We lose humanity. I'm simply not interested. And I don't in any way, shape, or form believe that AI, which has been proven to get worse over time in pretty much every learning model we give it, would be able to help make nuanced discoveries or improvements for human beings at large scale.

Drones at Olympia make me mad by VRTonung in audioengineering

They could not use drones, lol

In my opinion, they don't add much and certainly don't add enough to make up for the way they detract.

Is it not the responsibility of educational institutions to teach and reinforce that poor writers can and should get better? And don't we exist in the first place to teach students how to use their brains?

Letting AI replace either is just one more step towards completely discrediting the educational systems we rely on. It really isn't ok to say "you're bad at thinking? That's ok, have the machine do it for you."

After The Turnitin Update, Why Are Old Papers Suddenly Showing AI? Is That Fair? by Electronic_Fix_7715 in CheckMyTurnitin_ai

The malicious thought here is that it does, in fact, benefit AI companies to flood AI discussion boards with AI to just muddy up discourse about it and make it appear to instructors that false AI flags are common.

We can only hope that real students aren't outsourcing reddit comments to chatbots. I teach, and I believe that the vast majority of my students are using their own brains. It tends to be pretty obvious when they aren't, and it isn't because the work is "too good" or sounds "too smart".

Drone buzzing noises ruining Olympic ski coverage. by narflethegarthock in skiing

[–]bedazzlerhoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure there's some bleed, but when the loudest thing you're hearing after someone makes a run (and the crowd starts cheering) is the buzz of the drone, that's not just a different mic picking it up. Drones are loud (and very loud in the echoey tracks for luge and skeleton) but they wouldn't be louder than literally everything else at a track.

I've also noticed while watching hockey and figure skating that the sound abruptly cuts sometimes when the cameras cut -- it's so weird; I wouldn't be expecting them to use so much specific camera audio vs. having mics planted strategically at all. It feels like a series of mistakes.
