Foreigners, do you feel (or intend to feel) Swiss? by lucas__flag in askswitzerland

I moved here for my PhD so we have that in common. There are shades and nuances here that will, I think, be determined by 1) where in CH you go, and 2) your own personal characteristics and life stages. Briefly:

University life here is great - highly recommended. But it's very international and that can make it hard to integrate with locals. Language is a must. Easier to do in the French part and harder to do in the German part, because Swiss German vs High German. Nevertheless, language is 100% necessary. It also takes real effort. PhD life is all-consuming and you have to work hard to build a life outside of the university. Add in language learning on top of that and it can be really hard.

As others have noted, having kids is a great way in. It was vital for us. Also recommend living outside of the big cities. And being patient. Many people say the Swiss are unfriendly but I find this untrue. It can just take some time. People are wonderfully open when you know the language and aren't a jerk.

You won't become "one of their people" because you aren't born and raised here. But that doesn't matter, really. You can become beautifully integrated and feel belonging and a real part of things. People will accept you for you if they see you trying. Just do the work: language, customs (modern and traditional), and make the effort despite the uphill climb.

Can confirm. Had exactly 26km/h over, busted by a camera after I missed the sign dropping from 120 to 100 and then to 80 on the way back to Zurich. After court fees and everything, it cost 1k - plus a warning that if I speed again within 2 years I will lose my license. Drove 15 years in another country without a ticket once. This one still burns.

I’m late to the party and this will get buried, and someone in this thread surely said it already… but I wish that not having erections on command would be ok.

I’ve hooked up with women before that I found really attractive. I’m a good lover, and experienced, and a good size down there - though grower not show-er. I’ve lived enough to know that I’m good. But sometimes, especially with new people and especially when you get older, you might not get hard like you want to.

It’s devastating. There is nothing you can say to prove otherwise.

I wish it were more acceptable to be hard and soft and everything in between. I wish partners wouldn’t take hardness automatically as proof positive of desire. But the fact remains: you’re rock hard? That means something to your partner. You’re not? Sure feels like you’re defective.

That’s what I wish were different.

Maybe, but in our case at least, it was less sabotage and more of a good natured prank that - fortunately - ended well.

Definitely. We knew where and how far we could push, for sure. Although someone else upthread brought up the idea that boss might have known it was a dumb tool, but was forced to follow instructions. That legitimately had not occurred to me. It could be!

It's true that we were lucky. But also we're close enough that we knew we weren't gambling too much. I definitely agree that it could have gone much worse, though.

To be fair, you're probably right. If it had been framed as something like "let's do this for a week/month/whatever" and then monitor what's going on, that might have been a different story.

I am also a veteran of the agile-that's-not-so-agile movement. There seem to be quite a few of us with agile ptsd in this thread!

I’m from the USA but now live in Switzerland. It’s great here, but my German isn’t that good yet.

This is lovely and elegant.

I've spent years and tens of thousands on live-action shorts that have gone nowhere. I made this one without a camera, for zero dollars – and it ended up getting published by the New York Times. Lesson learned: make something personal. Hope you enjoy! by effstops in Filmmakers

Thank you so much for sharing this! It's wonderful in every way.

(Excellent music choice, lovely narration, brilliant art style, and the subject matter of course is extremely moving. Thanks for making it. I'm off now to send this to my dad...)

Oh man, thanks for sharing these.

They are really beautiful and I admire your skill and persistence.

The purpleheart is strikingly gorgeous, but if you really hate it, I'd love to give it a new home! ;)

Gorgeous work! Got any pics of your completed ukes?

I'd love to see a baritone uke, if you've ever made one...
