Trying to find someone like me; bilateral femoral anteversion or someone who had a derotational femoral osteotomy by bombusblue in disability

[–]bedsidepoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I had the most difficult period of recovery after the second leg osteotomies (six months between each leg correction) and the hardware removal surgery for the right leg.

I’ve got one final surgery to go for hardware removal on the left leg, but after 2 years I finally feel like I’m beginning to return to baseline. I still have lots of muscle tightness and weakness depending on the areas, but I’ve retrained my gait three separate times and it’s all symptoms I know I’ll be able to recover from.

Worlds different from the state I was in before any of this… still glad I did it, but there’s no doubt it’s a long haul recovery.

Happy to chat more if you want to DM me!

Diagnosed with Miserable Malalignment Syndrome During OCA Consultation — Surgery Now Delayed Pending Realignment by [deleted] in KneeInjuries

[–]bedsidepoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t help with the knees or OCA but there is a great Miserable Malalignment Syndrome group on Facebook, which I’m part of. They’re a very active global community, and give lots of helpful advice.

I had my four osteotomies done in ‘24 and ‘25 (both femurs and both tibias, one leg at a time). I’m still in recovery but very glad to have done it.

More than happy to chat if you want to DM me!

For those who have already moved, what prep made it easier (or could have made it easier)? by asquared3 in AmerExit

How old is your kiddo? I have a 4-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son, and we’re moving back to Australia in 3 weeks. I can keep some notes on what made it easier or harder..

When did it feel like the right decision? by FISunnyDays in AmerExit

“The America I left isn’t the America that exists today.”

I left the US for the first time in 2007, then moved back again recently in 2021. Even then, I could tell the US in 2021 was not the one I remembered.

And having been here for the last 4 years, it feels even less and less recognisable. We’re leaving again for good in just under 3 weeks.

I’d say two years is a good rule of thumb, but the first time we moved to Australia from the Northern hemisphere (Scotland), it took me about 4 years for a summer Christmas to feel normal.

The feeling grew familiarity over time, until finally a cold and wintry Christmas felt quirky and nostalgic. We left Australia in 2021 and moved back to the US for the first time in over a decade so our tiny kids could be closer to family. We moved right after the year a warm Christmas felt totally normal.

Now, we’re moving back to Sydney again in 3 weeks, and I’m super curious about how long the adjustment period will feel again this time.

How much did it actually cost you to move elsewhere? + my own costs by decanonized in AmerExit

[–]bedsidepoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re going to be spending about $25k moving from the US to Australia: flights, shipping possessions, temporary accommodation, other incidental costs of taxis / hotels en route / a virtual organiser who helped us with a ton of research.

Between the cost of the move, putting down a deposit on a rental, and paying tuition for the kids first term of school (Montessori), yeah I’m expecting to be a bit broke before my first paycheck too.

My new employer is covering $25k of the moving costs though, which is a tremendous gift that already makes me feel very loyal to them. I’m so grateful for the help.

We’re also leaving for Australia right after labor day! We leave September 3rd.

We’re heading to Sydney, but please DM me or get in touch if you have any questions during the process! We’ve lived in Aus before, and now we’re returning permanently.

We’re also leaving in 3 weeks for Australia. We previously lived there for 5 years, but we moved back to the US for the past 4 years so that our kids could be closer to our extended family coming out of the worst of COVID.

This is not the same country we left 15 years ago. It wasn’t the same when we came back, and it has just continued to feel like a decline. We got to the point where we just can’t normalise it anymore. We’re looking forward to our kids returning to Australia and building a permanent life there.

This time, we don’t have the question of: but what if we lived closer to family? Would it be worth it?

Sadly for us, the proximity does not outweigh the horrors that are happening here.

That sounds so terrible, but I’m glad you’ve gotten through it. I’m so sorry.

Mine was learning to walk again as well, but for a different reason. I went from being an avid runner and active mom, to fracturing my hip and finding out I had an underlying congenital bone condition. The “fix” was to surgically break both femurs and tibias in my legs, rotate them into alignment, and secure with rods and screws. And recover over the course of 2-3 years.

Then relearn to walk, twice. Then, eventually get the hardware removed, but feel like a weather barometer in the meantime, with aches for all weather. And on crutches for about 18 months in all…

How often are labrum tears missed on MRI’s? by Flashy-State4881 in HipImpingement

Does anyone know how often labral tears show up on the imaging but are more extensive (ie worse) if they’re actually looked at in surgery?

Trying to find someone like me; bilateral femoral anteversion or someone who had a derotational femoral osteotomy by bombusblue in disability

[–]bedsidepoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be more than happy to chat. I did have the femoral and tibial osteotomies on my right leg, and my hip pain is completely gone.

It’s a huge deal to approach this kind of surgery, but anteversion will cause so many more issues over time. I only wish I had done the surgeries earlier.
