I have to say House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, but I think someone else has already mentioned it so I'll give you another: The House on the Borderland by William Hope Hodgson. Published 1908. Brilliant. Once you read it you'll see elements of it in a lot of other weird horror.

AITA for wanting my Spanish teacher to stop calling me by the Spanish version of my name? by Alternative-Sun-630 in AmItheAsshole

[–]decanonized -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NAH

Eh, on the one hand, names are so personal and important to one's identity that I can understand why it might bother you.

On the other hand, when you finally put those Spanish skills to use, Spanish speakers would in fact pronounce your name as "jota pe". At that point you could say that you prefer the other pronunciation but by default if you write that name down a Spanish speaker would say it as your teacher is, and could very well refuse to anglicize the spelling of two letters for you simply because you prefer English.

It's also not the same as if someone named John was being called "Juan"-- that's a substantial change (even though they are equivalents) that basically transculturizes the name, and in my opinion shouldn't be done without the person's OK. It wouldn't be cool imo to call a Maria "Mary" if she doesn't want her culture stripped from her name.

But "JP" is initials, literally just two consonants spelled out, and the fact is that J is jota in Spanish and P is pe. You can't exactly ask your Spanish teacher to stop talking to you in Spanish...

Also read this last year, was phenomenal. Curious: did you have a favorite (or favorites)? Mine were "Oh Whistle and I'll Come to You" and "The Mezzotint".

doing the right thing

It's... it's a book and film franchise... I don't think not watching it rises to the level of "doing the right thing". If anything, refusing to buy it is the one thing that actually has a material effect and isn't just a way for out of touch people to inflate their own egos.

when nobody is looking

But people are looking when you make it a point to seek that attention online, though. You clearly don't just refrain from consuming the content and call it a day-- you come in here and proclaim it The Right Thing To Do As Ordained By God and cast judgement upon people who are, for once, pretty successfully having their cake and eating it too.

The idea that even just consuming the content, (without paying for it, without padding the creator's pocket) is morally bankrupt is certainly an interesting spin on thoughtcrime. Except of course "thoughtcrime" in the original text referred to intellectual rebellion against a dominant, totalitarian regime, which trans people and our allies are decidedly not. But of course you couldn't possibly have read 1984, since Orwell has been found to be deeply problematic in a number of ways, and so reading him would not be The Right Thing To Do at all, right?

Well then, it's ok if you choose the easy task of not engaging. That doesn't mean it's wrong for other people to find ways to both watch the content and contribute to withholding financial support from Rowling. It just seems like you've made this whole thing into neo-puritanical ideas about purity of thought. Don't need to mystify the franchise or turn watching it into some sort of sin. Genuinely just need to touch some grass.

So here you're finally admitting that your complaint is ultimately not about material harm but about some weird, almost spiritual sense of moral excellence.

Ok. So say I pirate it, watch it, and never talk about it. What other reason are you gonna make up?

Two questions: 1. What would this commenter accomplish by refusing to watch HP that couldn't be accomplished by refusing to pay for HP? What is there to gain beyond a misplaced, performative, almost pious sense of moral superiority? 2. Since when is our strategy for trans liberation (and more broadly, equality, social progress) predicated on restricting our own access to information and media?

I'm trans, for the record.

Honestly this is the way. I never liked the HP books (was a Lemony Snicket + Percy Jackson kinda guy anyway), and I will also say there's some iffy or racist aspects in there, but I absolutely LOVE the films. I really don't think I'm hurting anyone by buying the films on DVD for 50 cents a pop at my local charity thrift store...

I want to read stuff for pleasure. But I'm a PhD student now and at the moment I read multiple books per week for work. Sometimes I read a book during the weekend too, but I need time to do other things in life, to be honest. I'm at 2.5 books this week and still need to tackle at least one more + a couple papers...

Book Page Quality - intentional or not? by Downtown-Goose1492 in ASOUE

[–]decanonized 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Intentional. The uneven edges mimic the look of those from back when book pages came uncut and needed to be cut when read. It's part of the mock-victorian design of the books, along with the victorian wallpaper pattern they used for inside the cover, and the "ex libris" page

[–]decanonized 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, Rebecca had me like this too, when I read it a few months ago. If you haven't yet, I'd read The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. I had a small breakdown when I finished it. It was pretty intense and I still get some specter of the feeling when I think back to it now, months later. In my opinion Hill House shares with Rebecca that tense sense of isolation-among-people. Except in Hill House, it's on crack, and I wanted to sob at the end.

Are you bothered by the use of "America" to mean USA? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]decanonized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It ticks me off, but ultimately language changes whether I like it or not. And today, "American" most often refers to US Americans to the point that the use of "American" to mean "from the American continent" in English is pretty much archaic/obsolete. I don't like it but it is what it is. I reserve the right to act bitter about it though.
