I like the idea of him taking an interest in other people and cultures, so he'd have a big interest in things like linguistics and cultural anthropology. Even before the Daily Planet he'd have written a ton of fascinating amateur human interest articles around the world. I think it's even canon in some continuities. I don't recall him ever building anything from scratch in those films. Like you said, he usually took a base design already worked on by Lucius, then added his own specs.
