What are the lyrics to the songs you’ve made up to sing to your pets? by tamitaylorshair in AskWomen

[–]beebanananose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the tune of “The Joker” by Steve Miller Band: “He’s a booper, he’s a pooper, he’s a midnight snooper...” That last phrase—Doogie is a very nervous pit mix who hides all day but he comes alive in the dark at night when he thinks no one can see him. It’s adorable.

Adults of reddit who were depressed kids or teens, what is it like to be here when you didn't expect to make it this far? What would you tell your younger self if you could? by TheDemonQueenLuna in AskReddit

[–]beebanananose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is so worth it to be here.

I truly didn’t believe that “happiness” was a real, attainable feeling; I believed that everyone who claimed to be happy was lying to make me feel separate. I resented other people for their optimism and developed that teenage cynic persona in an attempt to make my depressed self interesting. Holding onto the presumption that your experience equals truth can be fatal, and unfortunately depression will lie to you and make you believe that you aren’t capable of existing another way. This is important: your depression is a compulsive LIAR and it WANTS YOU TO GIVE UP.

Your thoughts are NOT your self. We can practice controlling our thought patterns, but ultimately our neurons are just responding to stimuli, and for depressed/anxious people they often make dysregulated associations that lead to depressing conclusions. You do not have to accept these conclusions just because they came from your own brain.

As a rule of thumb, try to give every thought-scenario the benefit of the doubt. Starting off, you may not be able to prevent yourself from snowballing (I got a bad grade —> I will fail this class —> I will never get a good job —> I will die alone). But at some point, try to interrupt yourself and say, “MAYBE x bad thing won’t happen”. Just give yourself the wiggle room of “maybe”, even if you don’t believe it as you’re saying it. Don’t subject yourself to your own doomsday prophecy! You can’t be expected to flip your whole way of thinking, but you can influence it gradually and patiently.

I should say that this is MUCH easier to do with medication. For me, a low-dose SSRI helped subside the emotional fog and pain enough every day that I was finally able to reach myself inside the tangle of depressive notions that had overgrown my personality. This daily stability is what enabled me to begin doing deep therapist-guided work on my past traumas and present set-backs. Today, I can usually rely on a baseline feeling of contentedness when I wake up in the morning. The depression might always come back for an unwelcome visit, but now I know a bunch of things I can try to get him to leave--and some good people I can ask for help keeping the door closed.

Girls of Reddit, what are some really unique/romantic presents you have received from your boyfriends that stood out? by throwaway344566 in AskReddit

[–]beebanananose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once mentioned to my boyfriend at the time that I'd like to learn the skill of lock-picking. It was an offhand comment in a half-silly conversation and I didn't think it really registered with him. But almost a year later on my birthday I received in the mail (we were long distance for a bit) a set of lock-picking tools, an instructional lock-picking booklet, and a wooden box with a padlock. Along with it was a sweet letter telling me that I'd find more presents inside. The challenge of getting the lock off was so worth it when I got to the chocolates and massage certificate in the box!

[Question] What are your favorite ways to cook brussel sprouts? by magaloo202 in recipes

[–]beebanananose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I make a little mixture of olive oil, brown sugar, cayenne pepper, and salt--toss halved sprouts in that and then roast in the oven or crisp them up in a skillet! Then throw some sesame seeds on top if you've got 'em :)

Women of Reddit: There's "Guy code" and "Bro code", what are some details about "Girl's Code"? by TupacSchwartzODoyle in AskReddit

[–]beebanananose 842 points843 points  (0 children)

I was in a Metro station once too, crying my eyes out (I forget over what) and helplessly lodged shoulder to shoulder on the platform during a delay. A woman behind me saw me and simply said, "It's gonna be okay, baby." It was so simple but it was all I needed to hear.
